I have been an Independent for most of my life but this year I registered as a Republican.
A have a friend who I've known for 22 years. He is an Obama supporter.
He has ended our friendship because I am supporting McCain and not Obama.
He has gone so far as to say that I'm not the person he thought I was all these years. I am angry and sad and a little stunned.
Anyone else having similar experiences over the election?
Then you didn't lose anything my friend. This person NEVER WAS a TRUE friend. Just someone who pretended too be. We here at FR will be your friends. Though there are some of us you might not want!!! :-)
My elderly next door neighbor who I try to help out with things took me out to dinner a few weeks ago. He is Greek, he is intelligent and an ex-Chrysler plant manager of a local plant.
I've known he was a democrat so this particular night when we went out to dinnner I flat out asked him why he does not like Republicans. He said:
They're racists.......
When I tried to point out to him the history of Dems and racism regarding opposition to the 1964 civil rights act and Al gore Sr.s role, his only defense was "Oh, those were southern democrats".......
I hate to say it but his support of Obama has terminated our friendship.........Now he's just the old guy next door who can call on his democrat friends if he needs any help............I'm busy.
Where is the rule, maybe I haven't been around long enough either..........

I agree with both of you about Libertarian9 being a troll. The sign up date for one but the sentence "He has gone so far as to say that I'm not the person he thought I was all these years" sounds like a parody of Bozo's statements about his past associates I.E. He's not the Wright I knew, she's not the grandmother I knew, etc.
Seems kind of phony. The thread, however, seems to be good for FReepers, they are getting a lot of things off their chests about fair weather friends and brain dead liberal relatives!

I had a different experience. A friend from junior High and I have kept in touch over the years but have gone in different ways as our families grew.
Just before a class reunion, (before the last election) we e-mailed more often. I was going to pick her up and then travel from NJ to the reunion in Mass, stay over and then drive back.
During one of the e-mails she aked me not to talk politics during the trip. Uh oh! I must have said something that rankled her. She repeated the request another time and so I just shut up -— thinking this was going to be a loooooong weekend — and just before the Presidential election to boot!
Well-— I drove to her house and on the lawn was a Bush/Cheney sign! When I rang the bell I asked her if she was trying to pull a fast one on me. She stared at me and asked “Aren’t you for Kerry”? I said “NO! Absolutely not! Somehow, she got my e-mail messages wrong and we both thought the other was a Dem!!! What a relief!
It was a great trip and we discussed politics non-stop -— and often laugh at the mix-up!
my current GF drinks the Dem Kool Aid, even though she is not a citizen.

I got a "Sarah Palin for Vice President" sticker and I was all set to put it on my car when my dog (2yr old Golden Retriever) took it off the diningroom table and chewed it up! I told her she better watch out because no Obamessiah cultists were allowed in the house.....
Re evangelical Christians being more concerned about the preservation of Israel than American Jews are. Why is that? I have several Jewish friends and they don’t think Israel’s welfare is important at all. My family-children and grandchildren-always has some type of observance in honor of Hanukkah and Passover even though we are not Jewish. This has always been very troubling to me.
I’ve stayed in contact with an old friend from high school and college who is a liberal. We have a few things in common, like memories of the past and interest in travel. We get together for lunch once in a while and don’t discuss politics.
Wow, do I know what you mean! I have just recently quit my church choir partly because of one loudmouth guy who makes vicious fun of Sarah Palin. He's hardly the brightest bulb in the chandelier, too. Church is not exactly the place for political harangues. I don't trouble me fellow church members with my politics, and I expect that they will do me the same courtesy.
Unfortunately, courtesy is mostly unknown to democrats, these days, and that's not all that new a development. I first noticed the "new nastyness" when the Clintons first moved to DC, and the democrats on the Sunday chat shows began to talk over the Republican guests and not let them talk, and the moderators did nothing. At that time, so many years ago, I quit watching the Sunday chat shows, and I have never, ever regretted my decision. I can't tell you how much I don't miss them.
I just can't stand know-it-all dopes; I used to have several in my extended family as well, but fortunately they are all now deceased.
I dread election day and day/days afterward if Obama wins. The OJ verdict celebration and the Wellstone funeral will both pale enormously in comparison. How I hope McCain continues to pull even and ahead in the very few days we have remaining. Would LOVE to see the tv newspeople with tears in their eyes as they report a McCain upset victory!

I used to think I was a liberal. This year has been a real political awakening for me. I now identify as a Libertarian though I did register as a Republican and I DO support McCain/Palin.
This is a real and honest post. I’m new to Free Republic and not familiar with the protocol.
Sorry to offend, I really am happy to be here and I really am a supporter of McCain Palin.
I AM a NOOB. Sorry to have touched off anything negative. I should have made myself more familiar with the rules before posting.
Anyway, this topic hit too close to home for me not to chime in. A moonbat buddy of mine recently fired one across my bow, taking a bit of schaedenfreude-like joy in the fact that not only did both my NFL and fantasy teams lose, but that McCain-Palin are circling the drain. I replied that if they are, it's only because the drive-by media has done everything they can to help NObama ascend to power. He then shot back that Sarah was an “insult to all Americans” blah blah blah.
Thankfully, this little tet-a-tet ended with me saying that I'd vote for Ronald Reagan’s corpse, may God rest his soul, over that two-bit Chicago hack, and my buddy replied that he would vote for Reagan tomorrow if he could. And that was that. So, not all friendships have to go south over this thing.
Don't feel bad, I've had a shouting match with my Stepmother in law not to long ago. She is such a block head it drives me nuts and stuck on stupid to boot!
Dad is as conservative as I am, so that's a plus.
Mom and sister are just plain nuts.
I am very grateful for Free Republic because I can discuss the issues with people who are intelligent.
They lost us. We lost illusions.
It is always very painful at first. If the friendship or relationship was close, there is a period of mourning. You can question yourself, but in the end, they were the ones who refuse to have any sort of diverse relationship.
Because it happened to us so long ago, at first we took it personally. Over the decades, we have met or been contacted by others who experienced the very same thing. It has accelerated as a leftist tactic over the past 8 years. It is a tactic. Either you will capitulate and become a supporter of their ideology, or you are dead to them. They have as visceral a hate for our ideology as we do for theirs. There is no middle ground, no room for discussion and no room for Voltaire's:”I disagree with everything you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” They will remove your right to political free speech and if your death results, at least there is one less conservative.
Find other friends who are either tolerant or also conservative.
