John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

Let us not forget that up until about 3 days before the vote in 2006, INTRADE had The GOP keeping the Senate at around 75%.

I had an account there at the time.

Dump shares on Election day? At 4pm?

Intrade was duped by the bogus exit polls in 2004, and their traders are no more credible than any voter.

The Dems are in a box. This kind of opportunity rarely presents itself. Kudo to Team McCain for siezing it!

Nonetheless, the best of the bad options is for the Dems to drag this out.

If they cut & run and all go home it will be undeniable evidence that they’ve abandoned Obama.

I too was disapointed that neither candidate was at work during this bailout discussion. This is exactly what a leader should do...it is also very good way to get inside the head of a slacker like BO...I bet he was just about to go crazy trying to cram for Friday’s debate and now....this will throw him into a tzzy. BO will do something very crazy soon...

Partisan politics aside, there is a financial crisis. What happens will affect the country significantly. I am sure that Bush will reinforce that fact tonight. I am also sure that McCain knows exactly what Bush will say. It will probably scare the pants off of the nation.

I can recall Schumer's and Dodd's reaction when Paulson, et. al. met with the congressional leaders. From the NYT:

WASHINGTON — It was a room full of people who rarely hold their tongues. But as the Fed chairman, Ben S. Bernanke, laid out the potentially devastating ramifications of the financial crisis before congressional leaders on Thursday night, there was a stunned silence at first.

Mr. Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. had made an urgent and unusual evening visit to Capitol Hill, and they were gathered around a conference table in the offices of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“When you listened to him describe it you gulped," said Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York.

As Senator Christopher J. Dodd, Democrat of Connecticut and chairman of the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, put it Friday morning on the ABC program “Good Morning America,” the congressional leaders were told “that we’re literally maybe days away from a complete meltdown of our financial system, with all the implications here at home and globally.”

Mr. Schumer added, “History was sort of hanging over it, like this was a moment.” When Mr. Schumer described the meeting as “somber,” Mr. Dodd cut in. “Somber doesn’t begin to justify the words,” he said. “We have never heard language like this.”

“What you heard last evening,” he added, “is one of those rare moments, certainly rare in my experience here, is Democrats and Republicans deciding we need to work together quickly.”

Although Mr. Schumer, Mr. Dodd and other participants declined to repeat precisely what they were told by Mr. Bernanke and Mr. Paulson, they said the two men described the financial system as effectively bound in a knot that was being pulled tighter and tighter by the day.

“You have the credit lines in America, which are the lifeblood of the economy, frozen.” Mr. Schumer said. “That hasn’t happened before. It’s a brave new world. You are in uncharted territory, but the one thing you do know is you can’t leave them frozen or the economy will just head south at a rapid rate.”

As he spoke, Mr. Schumer swooped his hand, to make the gesture of a plummeting bird. “You know we’d be lucky ...” he said as his voice trailed off. “Well, I’ll leave it at that.”

I think this is a very bad idea. McCain seems to be reactionary in a big way. He isn’t showing calm in the face of this crisis. It’s a knee jerk reaction not a good campaign strategy.

Congress is about to hand over almost $1 TRILLION to Paulson, Bush supports this, and you have a problem with McCain going to DC to try and get a better deal for the taxpayers?

Bush, Obama, and the Dems are the reactionaries on this one.

‘now he can remind the Senate and the news that will have to cover it, the fact that he saw this fiasco coming and that the democrat senate refused to heed his advice just like the surge, I think it is a brilliant move’

Good point. The Reps should give McCain a lot of floor time to bash the Dems.

Why would Obama need to be there, do they need someone to vote “present”?

NOW, I just saw that Obama said he had asked first (this morning) for a joint statement. Very odd, considering he is leading in the polls. Must have bad internals over Fannie.

Obama can just as easily say that "we can handle both --- we have the executive ability to fight on two fronts.".

It would be nonsense but they could make it sound reasonable.
