Joe McCain tells the real story behind Republican Gov. Sarah Palins convention speech.
In a column in Australian newspaper, Republican Sen. John McCains kid brother, Joe, told the story behind Palins remarkable speech at the Republican National Convention.
It came from her heart, not the Teleprompter.
Her best line You know the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick. was not in the written speech, Joe McCain wrote.
I doubt it.
How many times has Palin read off a Teeleprompter in her life?
Im guessing zero.
So she winged it. She gave the parts she remembered and did not seem nervous at all.
She went off book, according to Joe said.
In fact she went off book so much, and so far, that the teleprompter operator went half mad trying to find out where he had messed up: national convention teleprompter operators who get lost are sometimes hanged from the rafters by irate speakers er readers. Finally, just before taking his cyanide capsule, he realised his text and her speech had the similarity of Saturn and a lawn chair, so I hear he just turned it off.
Brother Joe McCain wrote that he cannot wait to see Palin go one-on-one with Democratic Sen. Joe Biden.
Oh, give her easier competition.
Give her Democratic Sen. Barack Obama.
Hat tip: Lucianne.
I had a copy of Rudy’s speech and all of a sudden he also went off the script — completly off the script including the ending.
“How many times has Palin read off a Teeleprompter in her life?

If she was a newscaster wouldn’t she have had a lot of practice using a teleprompter. Sorry if I am ignorant and that is not the case.
Better to later sandbag Plugs maybe?
A good speaker has to be able to read the audience.
Im guessing zero.
She surely did a good job improvising the speech. However, as a former sportscaster, she should be more than familiar with a teleprompter.
That would be too clever by half. I doubt it.
And yes, she's a fairly capable speaker and goes off script frequently.
I never had a teleprompter to help me at training conferences but I could drone on for at least an hour about budget processes ~ WITHOUT the Ground Hog Day Effect.
In fact, I usually came with props, funny, even strange stories, off the cuff discussion about time spent in convents, and could almost always leave them laughing AND remembering ~ even years later ~ what I'd said.
Teleprompter stuff is not always the best stuff, still I've seen her speak in person and it appeared to me that she can speak extemporaneously as well as from prepared text. This is something Obama has not demonstrated!
I seriously doubt that in a small market, non-network studio they would have had teleprompters for the 2 minute sportscast.
I taught Public Speaking for two years at a business college and I can tell you students did MUCH better when they spent an hour memorizing their speeches than when they had to look at notes or a teleprompter.
Sports reporter... not newscaster.
As a sports reporter that winging it is something required.
Obama off his teleprompter goes something like this:
“Uh . . uh . . .uh . . you know . . .that’s a hard question to answer . . uh . .uh . .you know . . . hope we need . . uh . . change . . audacity of that hope and that change . you know . . lipstick on a pig . . stinky fish is still the same . . uh . . ah . . . . but, the short answer is yes, I AM the uh . . uh . . one.”
No kidding! I worked with several sportscasters while working in small market radio, and I would take scores off the phone hand them to the sportscaster and they would go live on the air moments later and could do 5 to 10 minutes using just the scribbled scores on paper.
It was reported the next day by FoxNews’s Brit Hume that Palin’s (and Giuliani’s) teleprompter had malfunctioned. Hume’s panel was impressed with how smoothly she dealt with it. Apparently, the “they wont say Islamic Terrorist” part of Giuliani’s speech was ad-hoc, and after his teleprompter got messed up.
Yes, I saw that reporting about Palin’s teleprompter at the time, but then the stories came out that it wasn’t true, that the guy running the prompter just got a little ahead a few times. If she did the whole thing without the prompter, that would have been the time to say so, put an end to the competing stories and say what actually happened. To this day, we don’t know what happened, we just have 2 or 3 different versions of what might have happened, including the version in this article.
WTF difference does it make? SHEESH!
If you read the posts that were part of this discussion, and if you try to follow them, you will hopefully see the point.
When I watched the CSPAN broadcast, there were a few shots from behind her where I could see the telepromters, and every time they were in sync with her. I don’t know, they may have gotten off a couple of times. To me, it shows how great a speaker she is if she can give a speech off a teleprompter and still make it sound natural.
