Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.
The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.
Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

Bolivar peninsula’s totally under. Nothing dry for ten miles in any direction. Anyone trapped there needs a lighthouse, life vest, or Engineer Scott.

Well, with all due deference to what you are facing, we’re talking triage now. Someone is gonna get hammered by this storm. If Houston and the petrochemical plants that surround Galveston Bay escape the worst of this by a simple wobble by the eye 20 miles to the NE, it won’t make that much difference in Port Arthur. But it will make a HUGE difference for over four million people and 20 percent of the refining capacity for the country.

Dominica Davis (on Fox) says high tide is around 3:0AM Cenral Time.
It may have been a case of simple ignorance, but FOX could clarify it.
Last high tide was about 11 pm. Next is about 6-7 am as someone else noted. That’s a two-foot factor.

Thanks for the laugh. I think I would prefer hurricanes to tornadoes ~ at least you have lots of warning.
