Hurricane Ike Live Thread III
NOAA/NHC ^ | 12 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/12/2008 5:12:09 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.

The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.

Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

I see one, very minor possible bright spot. The eyewall has shrunk quite a bit, and has wobbled a bit to the right. Maybe, just maybe, the worst of the dirty side of the storm will stay out of Galveston Bay now, and they will get 15 feet of surge instead of 25 feet. That is a BIG difference.

Fingers crossed.

That would simply make the surge much higher in Port Arthur and Beaumont.

“Jefferson Parrish by second hand reports on another site. Take that with a grain of salt, as Jeff Parrish is not the most exposed if I remember right.”

Jefferson Parish includes Grand Isle, which is right on the Gulf, to the west bank of NO

I had to lurk from work today.

Is there any word on our Freeper who was prepared to leave if needed and everyone was trying to convince - her, I think - to get out now (then)....I do not remember the Freeper’s name.....but did she leave? Have we heard from her lately?

Thanks if you know who I mean.

As of right now, the 5 stations I’m looking at near Galveston have surge levels of about 10 ft... still rising very rapidly.

I swear, I do not understand how that man manages to stay employed.

Maybe he's like the village idiot willing and ready to do things that no one who had all their cards would do. Like this for example.

What it reminded me of is an old sketch with a street reporter and anchors in different boxes. The street reporter is doing a special report on neighborhood muggings, and while the anchors are pontificating you see the reporter being mugged.

It must be a shock to GR’s show-biz ego to discover that the laws of physics even apply to the media.

One of the FNC reporters just said it’s believed that 80% of Galveston residents did evacuate.

And the 20% that didn’t ‘may have made a very bad bet.’

I've detested him ever since the last Israel-Lebanon war, when he enthusiastically drew a map in the dirt for the cameras of where the Israelies were positioned, apparently oblivious to the certainty that he was provided information to their enemies.

He did that in Iraq. Did he do it twice?
