Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.
The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.
Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

Fingers crossed.
still have high tide in about 3-4 hours from now.
So you are in Houston.
He's asleep.
On the porch.
That would simply make the surge much higher in Port Arthur and Beaumont.

only think more powerful that nature is the finger of God. Let us hope he stepped in.
I had to lurk from work today.
Is there any word on our Freeper who was prepared to leave if needed and everyone was trying to convince - her, I think - to get out now (then)....I do not remember the Freeper’s name.....but did she leave? Have we heard from her lately?
Thanks if you know who I mean.
Let’s hope!

As of right now, the 5 stations I’m looking at near Galveston have surge levels of about 10 ft... still rising very rapidly.
Maybe he's like the village idiot willing and ready to do things that no one who had all their cards would do. Like this for example.
What it reminded me of is an old sketch with a street reporter and anchors in different boxes. The street reporter is doing a special report on neighborhood muggings, and while the anchors are pontificating you see the reporter being mugged.
It must be a shock to GR’s show-biz ego to discover that the laws of physics even apply to the media.
One of the FNC reporters just said it’s believed that 80% of Galveston residents did evacuate.
And the 20% that didn’t ‘may have made a very bad bet.’
I dunno... Looks to me like just a little wobble as the eye is being re-defined... and tightened up.
He did that in Iraq. Did he do it twice?
Thank God you are safe.(((Hugs)))
Dog’s are so cool. With them, hope springs eternal ; P

did you see that Fox alert - did it say 3,000 people in a Walmart in Tyler TX??
That is an abandoned Walmart in Tyler they are reffering to that is being used for an evac center.....
