Hurricane Ike Live Thread III
NOAA/NHC ^ | 12 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/12/2008 5:12:09 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.

The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.

Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

I think Geraldo’s going to stay outside as long as possible based on what he’s insinuated.

Earlier today he was talking about how they’d just keep moving up floors as the water got higher and he’d be on the balcony.

Now they’re saying (and he reported the same) that they’ve been told to stay on the 2nd and 3rd floors and not to be on the balconies b/c of the pressure that would cause on windows, etc.

He, unlike Steve Harrigan, is still staying far more out in the open. Steve is also, but whenever they show him he’s not looking nearly as about to blow away from sight like Geraldo is.

That said, someone perhaps withheld a few of Geraldo’s drama pills at least at this hour. He’s tamer than he has been most of the time he’s in these situations. Certainly still Geraldo, but not absurdly hyped up Geraldo yet.

And, unlike in the past, he actually has not gone with the ‘victim line’ as far as people who stayed. He’s pretty much said they ALL knew what was coming and were ALL told to leave and how serious it was and that anyone who stayed was more or less stuck on stupid.

I actually think that if the local LE and government folk weren’t also holed up in that hotel that they might actually have opted for somewhere else. Of course I still think it was a less than wise location for them, but...at least he’s not gone into poor-disenfranchised-stranded-victims mode!

It’s not a very big eye

How big is not a big eye?

The water is still rising about a foot an hour with no signs of that trend slowing, and tide will be rising soon.

Most of the buoys and other stations I was watching are no longer reporting, or have had data interruptions.

That would be underwater by now, for sure...

Besides having family survive the 1900 storm, my father was a witness/survivor of the TC 1947 disaster.

Poor TC won't be around much longer.

For those thinking about 1900...remember the debris field stretched well inland, almost to Houstonand the island was completely cut off for days

I'm very concerned about the water in the bay and the ship channel.

I think anyone at home on the island is pretty scared and not moving much. I hope God keeps em’ safe.

Gas went from $3.89 to $4.99 here this afternoon, and we’re nowhere near the storm.

Everyone is near the storm when you have 20% of the nations refineries impacted. I was getting gasoline today in Dallas and they raised the price from 3.49 to 3.59 while I was pumping.

Perhaps Ike struck at night so we couldn’t watch death before our very eyes.

“I expect $5.00 this weekend.”

And Repubs should RAM this down the Democrats throats...

Can we DRILL, yet??
Can we build a refinery, yet?

Or are we going to go through this EVERY TIME from now on because Democrats have to appease the radical Socialists environmentalists??

I’m sure that FNC sent Steve Herrigan to Galveston, but I wonder if Geraldo sent himself...

DG, seriously, get low. If you are still on-line, go to Wunderground and click on the satellite animation. The outflow for the storm has just exploded over the last couple of hours. And there is an intense band of convection to the south of the eye that will wrap around and come in around the north of the eye soon. All of the people of Houston who thought this would be a lesser wind event than Alicia are, IMO, about to be proven wrong. This sucker looks like it will be worse, and over a much larger area.
