Hurricane Ike Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | 10 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/10/2008 2:18:37 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.

Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.

The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

IMHO, this storm will have huge financial consequences. Alicia happened 25 yrs ago, and that’s the last big storm to hit the area directly.

AM, can you PLEASE put this thread in Breaking News? I’ve directed friends in Houston towards the website, but they can’t find anything on Ike.

Trackin’ to Illinois? Everyone in that path should be prepared for some mundo/multiple tornadoes, speaking as a newbie here to the topic. But I remember a tropical storm right around that area, and as it moved across the states, there were hellacious tornado break-outs along the way.

Not getting this, unless it’s just too late.

Houston tried to evacuate when Rita was headed straight for it (before turning north at the last minute) in 2005. A couple of million people (or more) trying to flee the city created a disaster on the highways. People were stalled in traffic, cars were overheating, running out of gas and some people died from heatstroke and other ailments.

It's awful and it's scary but I understand the decision for those not in the low-lying areas to shelter in place.

I pray that everyone at home comes out of this OK and pray that this monster storm somehow lessens in strength before making landfall. It looks like we'll need a miracle for that to happen at this point.

I do not think that the Mods will elevate this to breaking news unless nautinurse requests it. Also, Ike is projected to be a tropical storm in a number of states starting late tomorrow, but they have not been added to the topics list. It has been suggested to NN a number of times that this should be done, but hasn't happened yet. I expect that she is ggetting some needed rest now.

They put some refugees up in some elementuary schools near San Antonio.

In less than 24 hours, they were bitchin about the fact there were no SHOWERS.

I didn’t realize evacuation centers were suppose to be Hyatt-like.

The local 2 Houston reporter is doing a repeat. The part of the bridge that was damaged while he was on it is gone. The tide has washed away everything from the dune to the Gulf.

... And Ike isn’t even here yet...

If you were around me for a day or two without a shower, you'd be the one bitching. It is not unreasonable to think that shower facilities should be part of the logistical planning for an evacuation.

As of the 4am update, Ike appears to track up I-45 out of Galveston, through Houston downtown, through my neighborhood here in NW Houston, and on up to Dallas. Local news is forecasting this to still be a CAT1 by the time it hits home, about 70mile from the coast. WOW.... I’m not worried about the storm. But I’m very worried about power. We’re being told to expect power outages lasting up to 2-weeks. I pray it doesn’t come to that.

Austin news says several schools have opened as shelters and are already full. A long list of school closings or early release. As of yesterday, ours is closing an hour early and the football game has been bumped up an hour. We’re picking our kids up at the game so we can get them home rather than waiting for the buses.

Good luck to all those south of us.

Good morning from the Baton Rouge, LA area.

We are waking up to eerily familiar high and gusty winds and rain.

Go away, Ike, go away!

Prayers for all in Ike’s path.

Something I learned in the early days here in the war zone, when things were quite...shall we say...rustic...

Baby Wipes and deodorant will get you through a couple of days.
