What is it to be an American? The John McCain I met tonight was incredibly Reaganesque as he reminded us that American pride comes from winning the fight - not from whining for handouts as victims. McCain, through his own riveting personal story of transformation from self centered cocky fly boy to dedicated man of his country. McCain reintroduced himself to America, and reintroduced us to ourselves. The speech was a huge hit. And the comparisons to Obama were striking.

Let me just say that McCain was not my first, second, third, fourth, or even fifth choice.
I do not agree with him on a few issues. I am still pissed at him over a few things he’s done over the last 10 years.
But I do respect him and I am willing to trust him.
He won me over for good tonight.
Sarah Palin won me over 3 months ago, while she was just a political fantasy VP pick.
Ridge’s speech was a bit of a clunker for me, too. I didn’t hate it, but I thought it was one of the weaker speeches of the convention.
This struck me as a PRESIDENT giving a State of the Union address. Not a rock star before an adoring crowd. What a contrast.
I don’t like some of the things McCain has done. I am still FURIOUS with him over the Amnesty deal.
But, he has seemingly moved to the right. His choice of Palin GREATLY encourages me. Had he picked Ridge or Lieberman, I would have stayed home.
I have changed my mind and I will vote for McCain/Palin.
"We believe everyone has something to contribute and deserves the opportunity to reach their God-given potential from the boy whose descendents arrived on the Mayflower to the Latina daughter of migrant workers. Were all Gods children and were all Americans."
The way I take it, underneath the sugar coating and aside from the intoxicating distraction of adding Sarah to the ticket, he slipped in his intentions to continue his efforts toward shamnesty for illegals.
I'm not happy about that and illegal immigration is still a hot issue in my book. Or did we all forget about it?
I'm convinced that:
He won't appoint activist judges,
will support the Second Amendment,
will work toward energy Independence,
will keep the military strong,
will put America first,
and will not sell us out.
I have a new tag line.
He may struggle with the teleprompter but that doesn’t take away from the message that he presented. It was the exact opposite of the Democrats. It showed more pride in self-reliance (not really the word I want but its late. :-))and none of the whining and ‘woe is me’ that we saw last week.
The Soros and Chicago machines are praying you sit home on election day because of immigration while their puppet cruises into the White House and destroys this country from within in a matter of 4 years.
If you think 4 years is an okay sacrifice to make your point on immigration keep in mind that we are still paying for Carter’s disastrous foreign policy almost 30 years later with a soon-to-be-nuclear Iran.
Let your conscience be your guide.
exactly.. this was not McCain’s medium. He is just not that compelling as a speaker. However, his story of sacrifice, bravery and moral character was very good. And more importantly it was moving. I was spellbound. I wish JM could speak better, but then, he wouldn’t be John McCain.
He has my total respect and my vote, and this man has really p*ssed me off in the past... but again, that’s John McCain.. He has his way of doing things. A true man’s man. The gipper would have been proud.
McCain and Palin.. I wouldn’t change a thing about either of them.
Exactly! I was gonna hold my nose and pull the lever for McCain. It would have been a vote against Obama rather than a vote for McCain. Then along came Palin and I was going to vote for her. Now, I can look myself in the mirror and say I'm voting for McCain/Palin.
Fred Thompson would have been great, but, as the Rolling Stones said years ago, "You can't always get what you want. But if you try, sometimes you get what you need."
The party needs these two. They are the right people at the right time and I'm proud to vote for both of them.
Your post really impressed me, Saundra. All of us can only hope we'll still be supporting McCain through the next four years if he wins the election.
BTW, did you hear Cindy McCain's speech?
As we used to say at USNA-It builds character. I think McCain learned the lesson on immagration. We can’t leave the backdoor open while we sort the visitors out.
“It took a lot of guts on a national stage for John McCain to say on education, among other statements about school choice and seeking the best in educators, that a better solution is also to help bad teachers find a new line of work.”
His discussion about education was the single best—and gutsiest— thing the man laid out there. You can tell he really means it when he talks about reforming education in this country.
But substantively, he had some huge problems: if you have 50 enemies, you have no enemies. The public needs to see that you are going after someone you can defeat. But McCain listed a phone book full of people---virtually everyone in the U.S.
Second, by failing to identify Obama as the "enemy," it was unclear why his policies are better than Obama's. The "big oil" comment was silly---would have been better just to state he was for drilling and nukes.
Third, the "everyday people" shtick is really getting old---more "victimhood." Why not name three successful people that McCain was going to help other people be like?
Now, Karl Rove said this was exactly the speech McCain should give. Rush Limbaugh said it was exactly the one he shouldn't give. We'll find out who's right soon enough. But I'm back to voting AGAINST Obama rather than FOR McCain, and that's too bad, because Palin is the most inspiring conservative I've seen since a young Newt.
I know, this is an unpopular view here. Everyone wants to think that McCain "hit it out of the park." But I found this as boring as the Giants-Skins game.
