What is it to be an American? The John McCain I met tonight was incredibly Reaganesque as he reminded us that American pride comes from winning the fight - not from whining for handouts as victims. McCain, through his own riveting personal story of transformation from self centered cocky fly boy to dedicated man of his country. McCain reintroduced himself to America, and reintroduced us to ourselves. The speech was a huge hit. And the comparisons to Obama were striking.

Okay, so he won me over. So sue me.
This for me was the most striking part of the speech...that challenges are not to be avoided at all cost, but your character is how you respond to challenges.
I thought he gave a very good speech
Great speech. McCain/Palin, a force to be reckoned with.
Who picked Tom Ridge to speak tonight?
I have a couple of killer dogs that would have been warmer than him.
What a contrast between Obama and McCain - one is like a whiny teenager who is mad that the world isn't "fair" - the other is a grown-up adult.
Also — “Do not be distracted by the ground noise and static!”
Standing ovation followed!
The McCain/ Palin ticket is about real change. About changing the nature of government and government programs to match the needs of the 21st century. McCain sharply contasted himself to 0-bama with Mcain/ Palin being leaders of a better tomorrow not just some politician promising to spend and spend and spend our tax dollars.
I will be comfortable in the voting booth this November.
McCain/Palin will be my choice.
Yup. I told my husband, I’m a McCainiac now!!! He was just wonderful, and I learned things about him and his life that I didn’t know before. It’s funny, he’s been in public life forever, and I thought I knew him, but I learned so much more tonight. I’m totally down with him— so much so that I’m sending money,
Someone else wrote that Palin is what 99.99% of politicians CLAIM to be, but aren’t. I think the same qualifies for McCain. A lot of politicians claim they will bring change to government, but government usually ends up changing them. Not so with McCain and Palin. They WILL change government and they have the record to back it up.
Well done Senator (soon to be President) McCain. You are the man!
I think the McCain/Palin ticket will unify the Republican party again after hearing tonight’s speech. The Dems are whining all over the TV & radio!
The great part is that there were no put-downs, just straight talk about who had more actual experience. I think this ticket will bring in a lot of Republican voters who were reticent about McCain a few weeks ago.
You’re exactly right.
Forget the lawsuit- an intelligent person knows when to change direction.
McCain’s da man and Palin is the W O M A N
What a team...If they are not a winning team i don’t know what is...I hope they win by a huge margin in November and then surprise Americans by restoring America and the Republican Party to it’s true good roots that benefits all.
The best presidents IMHO haven't been great speech makers. Eisenhower was a terrible speech maker, so was Truman.
I remember how estatic the (media said the public) was about Mario Cuomo's speech to the Dem convention back in 1984 on behalf of Mondale, how disappointed it supposedly was with Reagan. How Michael Dukakis was a great speaker and how ineffective was Bush 41. Guess speeches aren't everything...
McCain will be just fine...can't wait for the debates!
It was more of a presidential speech to all Americans, vs a rallying speech to the republicans.
While watching it, I thought it started slow. Great middle portion, where McCain gave substance on the differences between his plans and Obama’s. And such a strong, touching, ending. Powerful ending.
At times, if you closed your eyes, it almost sounded like Reagan speaking. Don’t misunderstand, I am not claiming McCain is Reagan.
However, after re-reading much of the text of the speech, I must say it was better than I first thought. There is a lot of powerful stuff in McCains speech. A lot of depth and complexity, that I did not hear or understand fully the first time.
