62 die as suicide bomber strikes Pakistani luxury hotel
Pakistan News.Net
Saturday 20th September, 2008 (IANS)
A suicide bomber drove a truck packed with explosives into the Marriott Hotel in the heart of the Pakistani capital Saturday evening, killing at least 62 people including foreigners and setting ablaze one of the best known hubs of the country’s elite.
The devastating attack, one of the worst even by the standards of increasingly lawless Pakistan, took place just a kilometer from Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s house where President Asif Ali Zardari, army chief General Ashfar Parvez Kayani and over 300 MPs were at an Iftar dinner.
Authorities said at least 120 people were injured, many suffering extensive burns, in the terror strike that sent orange flames and thick smoke billowing out of the hotel.
And what was a bloody disaster turned worse as gas lines running to the hotel’s kitchen exploded and a huge ball of fire quickly enveloped the hotel.
In no time, a number of vehicles in the hotel’s sprawling car park were reduced to twisted and mangled remains. Many feared that the hotel, a landmark and a preferred destination for diplomats and businessmen, could simply collapse.
With the roar of the exploding truck heard in a radius of 15 km, security personnel, ambulances and rescue workers raced to the burning hotel to rescue who they could and rush them to hospitals across the city.
The explosion left a 20-foot deep crater at the entrance.
Police sources said the dead include three South Koreans, two Saudis and one American. There were also foreigners among the injured.
Dazed witnesses said the explosives-laden truck, bearing government number plates, was stopped at the hotel entrance for a routine security check.
‘As the security people were looking into the truck, it swiftly moved away and hit the outer wall of the hotel, causing a huge explosion,’ one man said.
Hotel owner Sadruddin Hashwani was grief stricken as he spoke to reporters outside the hotel complex: ‘I don’t have any enemies... These must be enemies of Pakistan. This is a huge loss to the country, to humanity.’
He confirmed that five security guards who were checking the truck were among the dead.
Hotel sources said at least 300 people were dining when the earth-shattering blast took place 7.56 p.m., some 40 minutes after sunset when people break the Ramadan fast.
The explosion occurred four hours after President Zardari addressed a joint sitting of both houses of parliament, calling for joint efforts to deal with terrorism and extremism.
The blast was so massive that many Islamabad residents thought an earthquake had struck. The windows of buildings in the vicinity were blown apart.
The authorities declared an emergency in Islamabad hospitals.
‘The fire has engulfed the whole hotel and people are being rescued,’ Rehman Malik, an advisor to the prime minister, said at the disaster site.
Security officials said several people residing in the hotel were trapped inside.
Hospital sources said they had received about 40 bodies and more than 100 injured. However, witnesses said the number of dead was over 60 and more than 120 were injured.
As the truck bomb exploded, crockery came crashing at the prime minister’s house, where dignitaries were seated around tables on the lawns of the sprawling mansion.
In no time, security personnel herded the VVIPs to safety.
Some officials said the intended destination of the killer truck might have been the prime minister’s house.
After a suicide attack in January last year, the hotel had increased its security and huge boulders were put outside the boundary wall. The wall was reinforced and a second layer of heavy boulders was placed before the hotel building.
The hotel also deployed sniffer dogs.
‘In fact the dogs started barking after seeing the truck,’ said owner Hashwani.
The hotel has hosted several world leaders including former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

LAX mechanic charged with immigrant smuggling
Imperial Valley News ^ | Sept. 15, 2008 | Staff
Posted on September 20, 2008 5:37:21 PM PDT by La Enchiladita
Los Angeles, California - An elevator mechanic employed by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) was formally indicted today for smuggling foreign nationals into the United States by bypassing established security at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
Roberto Amaya Canchola, 53, a United States citizen and Los Angeles resident, is charged in a six-count indictment handed down by a federal grand jury here this afternoon with bringing illegal aliens into the United States for financial gain and with bringing illegal aliens into the country without presenting them to an immigration officer. If convicted on all six counts, Canchola faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for each count. Canchola is scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment September 22.
The defendant, who is currently free on $100,000 bond, is on leave from LAWA pending an administrative review of his employment status. His badge was confiscated the day of his arrest and has been deactivated by the Airport Police. Canchola is a 23-year City of Los Angeles employee, of which 19 years have been at LAWA.
Canchola was arrested at LAX on August 23, after agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) observed him using special access security keys to smuggle four aliens, including two with criminal convictions, off an arriving Mexicana Airlines flight and through the airport. Canchola escorted the aliens through a series of restricted access elevators and corridors, enabling them to avoid inspection by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers. After guiding the aliens through the airport, he led them to an awaiting taxi outside.
Those who put our nations security at risk to pocket a profit can expect to pay a heavy price, said Robert Schoch, special agent in charge for the ICE office of investigations in Los Angeles. This investigation is very much ongoing and we are determined to identify and bring to justice any others who were complicit in this scheme.
The investigation began in late July, after CBP officers discovered a discrepancy in the number of passengers from a Mexicana flight clearing the airports federal inspection area. The four passengers presented false alien registration numbers or Mexican passports without valid visas when boarding the flight in Mexico. A review of LAX surveillance video identified Canchola intercepting the four passengers arriving on the flight and guiding them through the federal inspection area.
This case, initiated by CBP, investigated by ICE and assisted by Los Angeles World Airports, reinforces the necessity for constant vigilance in overseeing our security systems, said CBP Los Angeles Field Operations Director Kevin W. Weeks. We will continue to maintain a strong enforcement posture against human smuggling and will continue to work with ICE and LAWA to identify and prosecute violators to the full extent of the law. We have a commitment to keep America safe.

“Has the countdown begun?”
By SHAHID AZIZ

SNIPPET: “(Sequel to ‘Is there War on Terror yet?’ published in The Nation 14 Sept 2008)”
SNIPPET: “A nuclear Pakistan cannot now be subdued through political means alone; therefore some violent methods will have to be employed to end the game. May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to handle these issues. This is not a time for political bickering and infighting. Perhaps this is the most critical period of our history, a time when we need to be giving strength to each other; a time to hold hands. We have never been confronted directly by an enemy this size. Our internal cohesion is critical to our survival. We have no friends around who would come and put things right for us. Lets’ do it.”

Melamine is mainly used for manufacturing melaminoformal dehyde resin, which is well water, heat and arc resistant and bright. It can also be used in decorative laminates, aminoplastics, adhesive agents, coatings and used as a paper reinforcing agent, textile auxiliaries, cement water-reducing agent and leather retaining agent.
The media are sharply divided about the level of criminality of the ELF terrorists. The Phoenix New Times carried an article, Burn, Baby Burn, this year that quoted environmentalists who were sympathetic for someone burning down houses that were under construction in open country outside Phoenix. Shortly later, the same Phoenix paper carried an exclusive interview with an unidentified man claiming to be the leader of an Arizona arson ring that has torched nearly a dozen unoccupied houses, according to an opinion article by James Taranto in The Wall Street Journal on February 7. The Journal concluded, ...journalists who disregard normal moral sense in pursuit of a story give our profession a bad name.

Plane Delayed After Suspicious Incident
Updated: Sep 19, 2008 03:43 PM
McCarran passengers on a flight headed to Minneapolis were forced to get off the plane and be re-screened after a suspicious incident.
McCarran officials say a Northwest Airlines flight was boarding early this morning when the pilot noticed an employee of the wheelchair contractor had boarded the plane and was talking with a passenger.
The pilot and the rest of the crew became suspicious because there was no official reason for that to occur. Authorities re-screened the passengers and searched the plane.
The plane and its passengers were given the all clear and took off about 3 hours late.
