The problem this year is that paleo reactionaries egotistically think they are too pure to vote Rebublican. They prefer negroism to Republican by default.

With this batch of weak and damaged candidates there has to be someone who has enough political gravitas without being a fundamentally flawed as the three current possibilities.
It isn’t a matter of philisophical purity that motivates me.
McCain screwed over the GOP so badly and so often than it has to be some sort of battered constituent disorder that motivates GOPers to vote McCain.
It pains me to see people that lack the self respect to say no to McCain.

I totally agree, but I was thinking more in terms of Nixon’s domestic policy (i.e.: the wage and price controls of the early 70’s, creating the EPA IIRC to name two examples). Particularly vis a vis McCain...I don’t really remember reading anything about Nixon going out of his way to “reach out” to the Dims acrossed the aisle to the same extent that McCain has.
Hell, I think even the Dims of the past have covered up everything. You mention William Jefferson (D-LA), one could go back to the days of Huey Long to show how deep corruption runs with them...heck if you advance “the cause” well enough they’ll name a bridge over the Mississippi River after you.

I see him as very dangerous. In the past he has reached across the aisle more often than not. McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, leading the ‘Gang of 14’, advancing anti-gun bills, amnesty legislation, demanding less conservative judges, etc. are all fine examples of how he has stood in defiance of the GOP and the conservative cause.
As president and standard bearer of the GOP, the Republican minorities in congress would be expected to support his liberal landmark legislation, entitlement programs, restrictons on civil liberties, etc. He would embrace bipartisanship as he has shown on so many occasions. He will support and sign every piece of legislation that Nancy Pelosi & Hillary Clinton hand to him. The democrats will all be laughing.
At least a Republican minority could oppose a democrat president.

OK, so the ‘all smug and sh*t’ was more of a collective reply to all those who replied to me with any and all variations of “that is what you’re getting, a liberal”. That nerve is what has been stepped on. You think I don’t know that McCain is a liberal? You think I wanted him as a candidate? Capital N-O! He’s the guy we’ve got. He’s the guy who will get my vote. I can’t not vote for president. If you, or anybody else decides not to vote, or wants to write somebody in, go for it, more power to you, you definitely have the right to do so.
I think the reply ‘well, then, say hello to President Hillary or President Obama’ to such people is childish. I have never, nor will I ever, give anybody any cr@p who absolutely, positively cannot vote for McCain. I do not deserve any cr@p thrown my way because I WILL vote for McCain.
It was not my intent to give you cr@p- I know you are conservative. I meant to prompt for your reasoning. Let me ask you one other thing though:
If you had the option of a Reagan Conservative running as a third party or independent candidate, would you join with us in supporting him?
We screwed up royally in this primary by not nominating a conservative in the first place. My goal now is to do all I can to NOT have Hillary or Obama occupy the WH. I cannot in good conscience vote 3rd party after we already have a nominee.
I would be more than willing to work toward getting a Reagan conservative candidate for 2012, whether McCain is really only going to serve one term, or to have that candidate run against President Obama.
Is that from some sense of Republicanism, then?
I mean, the same does not apply for me, as I removed myself from the Republican Party once Hunter was out of the race. I gave support to Keyes, but I am no longer committed to Republicans at all. I will support Conservatives, but party affiliation means nothing to me anymore.
What is it that leaves you 'stuck with McCain', no matter what? If that Reagan Conservative I mentioned was pulling more votes than McCain according to polls, would you still be unable to make the jump?
But most important is the Supreme Court appointments. I am pro-life, and pro-2nd Amendment. For those two issues, the big issue is the judiciary. We must have strict constitutionalists appointed to our courts. As most of the Justices are in their late 60's or older, this is an issue that needs much more attention than it currently has.
We KNOW that Obama and Hillary will appoint atrocious judges, which WILL be approved by the Senate. McCain MAY give us good or improved judges. He might now either, but there is a CHANCE with him. I'll vote for a chance over no chance.
We had our chances in the primary. On my ballot we had a choice of McCain, Romney, Huckabee, Thompson, Brownback, Paul, Giuliani, and Hunter. There were plenty to choice from, and the people chose Romney here and McCain nationwide.
I won't begrudge someone's choice to vote for a 3rd party candidate, but I'm no sellout in my choice to back McCain. It's all about the judges with me.

And just who would you suggest could actually win? Hmmmm? Come on, let’s have some names, not some tiresome rant! This is getting old. I’m getting sick of being accused of being a sell-out for conservatism, just because I choose to vote for someone you pure and holy conservatives don’t approve of! Sheesh!
You know there are two types of conservatives. On one hand, you have the pure, holy “real” conservatives. On the other hand, you have the practical conservative. I wonder if that breed is getting rarer on here anymore. Maybe they aren’t so rare but silent. I hope they are a silent majority.
I always thought of myself of being a conservative. But I do want our side to win. I don’t want an Obama or a Clinton to win. Especially with the leadership in Congress or the Senate being what it is. Just think about that!
I’ll let you ponder on that cheerful scenario.
