New hampshire is safe because it is basically a rich suburb of Boston -— where the crime is.
This is a silly list.
Any state with low overall population density and one crappy city makes the list.
Don’t you pick on Picksburg, now.
Anyone notice that all off the safest states were predominantly white states? Just an observation.
“Those of us on the Northern.....Border are considered the safest”.
It’s because your Border is with Canada and not Mexico.
And if you’ll look at the chart, you’ll also find that the “safest” states are those with few “Minorities” and the more “dangerous” states are much more heavily “Minority” population wise.
I think it has mostly to do with large urban centers (e.g., northern state that borders Canada but is far from a “safe” state).
Alaska is a very multicultural place. Cities are all foreigners, Asia, Polynesian, Mexican, Chilean; yet many of the immigrants have flourished here. In rural areas, you have the native populations who suffer massive problems due to the influence of Alcohol; actually going extinct from it. Violence, abuse, suicide, rape, OD’ing from booze, freezing to death in snowbanks, or burning up in a cabin is more the the norm; all from the culture clash (BOOZE) with our white world. The booze is what sends crime rates off the charts here.
Yet, where we live, hasn’t been a shooting in over 25 years and everyone has sidearms on their belts. Nobody ever removes keys from vehicles. We don’t even have locks on our outside doors. No crime at all if you keep your booze locked in gun vault and everyone knows it.

I think the big advantage with the safe states is that people aren’t all crammed into tight cities like sardines.
It’s probably the OTHER cities that drag the good ones down. The state at large, is most likely properly positioned.
I’m not so sure about that.
NJ is one of the most densely populated states and it is a small state and doesn’t make EITHER list.

Totally immaterial.
It should be obvious that the magic ingredient is freakin' cold. Apparently low temperatures feeeze crooks of all kinds into immobility.
NJ proves the point:
Camden (#5 most dangerous) and Newark (#20) NJ are on the list as the most dangerous cities in the USA.
Nonetheless, the relatively dense population of NJ keeps NJ off the “most dangerous state list”
Las Vegas (in “most dangerous state” Nevada) doesn’t even crack the top 20.

Basically, at the state level, this is a stupid metric.
You also have a border with Massachusetts, which is dangerous in other kinds of ways.......

As a Canadian US resident near Wilmington I can say that we have our share of “Yankees” in our own neighborhood who retired down here. How they are messing things up I have no clue? Can you elaborate on how they are “messing things up”?
I have seen the best and worse of all sides here as an outsider and the advice we gave our children was to get along with everyone. At my son’s high school 46% of the kids there are part of the free lunch program!!! And after all these years you still have the us vs them, North vs South, black vs white crap going on. My wife volunteers at the school and has seen this first hand.
I have seen my share of the white trash rednecks, black gangsters, illegals, and then I have seen the Yankees. The Yankee kids go through hell down here trying to adjust not to mention their parents.
The Yankees I know volunteer at the schools and get involved with community and they are the reason for the economic growth going on down here.
Have you ever been to the Communist Bloc know as Raleigh Durham and Chapel Hill. They bring their liberal voting, high taxes and gov regulation with them from freakin jersey and other liberal hellholes.
