Montana was the 7th safest! The write up is the following:

Some credit Montana's low crime rate to the high level of gun ownership . Since most criminals are looking for easy targets, this may keep some in line. The Treasure State has lowest burglary rate in the country.

Hmmmmm......

Was surprised that Arizona wasn’t higher. I’ll tell you those committing the crimes aren’t natives.

Here in Michigan we get a taint from a couple of cities but overall we are a pretty safe state. In the town where I live there has been one murder in the last 30 years, I leave my keys in the ignition of my vehicle and haven’t seen my house key in years.

“How many of these states have large minority groups as residents? Might be interesting to see and compare to other states with much smaller population groups.”

The same article has a link to the “safest” states. They are, in order:
1. New Hampshire
2. Maine
3. North Dakota
4. Vermont
5. South Dakota
6. Wyoming
7. Montana
8. Iowa
9. Idaho
10. Wisconsin

What is the ethnic makeup of the above states?

1. Nevada Vegas, baby!

2. Louisiana N'Awlins crime and corruption. And that's just the ones carrying the badges or elected to public office *cough Cold Cash Jefferson cough*.

3. New Mexico Border State.

4. South Carolina Huh?

5. Arizona Another border state

6. Tennessee No wonder. All that good whisky there to drink. Let's hear it for Lynchburg!

7. Maryland It's next to the criminals in Washington, DC.

8. Alaska Those polar bears are a mean bunch.

9. Florida New York mobsters head south for some winter sunshine.

10. Michigan Detroit, Benton Harlem, Ka-zoo, Flint ... yep why isn't it higher on the list?

Why isn't Pennsylvania on this list? Between Philthydelphia and those riotous Picksburg Stillers fans surely it must be up there on the "dangerous states" list.

All of the safest states are places where people wear thick, down coats most of the year.

Being a warm-weather girl, I’d still rather take my chances. :)

Interesting to ponder. Note also many of those states have a healthy attitude toward firearms as well, and that 5 of the 10 form a block (ND, SD, WY, MT, ID)

No. 5: South Dakota
As one of the safest states to live in, South Dakota suffers from a shockingly high incidence of rape, but ranks in the top 5 in all other categories.

Rankings in Crime (out of 50)

Assault: 46
Burglary: 48
Murder: 49
Motor Vehicle Theft: 50
Rape: 9
Robbery: 48

Wow. Are the assault, burglary, murder, robbery, & auto theft rates so low because the bad guys are too busy raping?

I think are probably right. I think most of these states made the list dur to individual reasons. But my understanding is that places like Chicago, Boston, and Camden, NJ had fast rising crimes rates. So how did New Mexico make it?

“Because Alaska, a state not known for its racial diversity, is on the list, whereas Califorinia, New Jersey and New York, three states that are about as racially diverse as you can get, aren't. Just goes to show how wrong some preconceived notions are.”

It may not be known for it, but see the following quote:

“We used Bureau of the Census estimates of race and ethnic data for 1992 to compute the proportion of the Alaska population which is minority (26.1%) and the minority proportions of the ten states with the lowest incarceration rates. None of these ten had a minority population which comprised more than 13 per cent of the general population.”

Here it the link to the study.

There is a saying up here that the cold keeps the riff-raff out. A few good folks avoid it, too...

Compton is a rough place but I don’t see the Golden State in the top 15.
