I see alot of Southern border states there.

Those of us on the Northern (NH, Maine, Vermont) border are considered the safest.

How many of these states have large minority groups as residents? Might be interesting to see and compare to other states with much smaller population groups.

I don’t belive the border is the issue (although it can cetainly contribute).

Texas has the longest border, for example, and it’s 14th -— with most of the problem undoubtedly being Houston —— where the issue is not the border, but the Katrina refuse and like and kind.

The sprawling underclass areas and Democratic strongholds seem to be, by far, the worst areas (e.g., Flint Michigan, Compton, etc.)

Michigan is a northern border state that made the list but our violence is due to a couple of rough cities. We don’t see a lot of canadian violence. However I would also look at population densities of the southern border states.

Well, you're wrong.

Because Alaska, a state not known for its racial diversity, is on the list, whereas Califorinia, New Jersey and New York, three states that are about as racially diverse as you can get, aren't. Just goes to show how wrong some preconceived notions are.

This is not very informative although factually true. A state is listed as dangerous based on the numbers developed from crimes within it's borders. Some states are “tainted” by their Metropolitan cancers, like New Orleans, Baltimore, Birmingham, et al.

A little off topic, don’t you think? Or did you just want to bash Northerners and any excuse will do?

In all fairness to Louisiana, if one extracted the contribution of New Orleans to the crime situation, I believe Louisiana would rank actually middling to low. I say this as a resident of New Orleans and hold-up victim.

Agreed. It’s not fair to rate a whole state when most crime is centered in the big cities.

Would you expect LESS for “sin city”?

I’m not surprised.
