Ever since Super Tuesday a super debate has been raging on FR concerning John McCain. I was never a McCain supporter, in fact I penned the post Super Tuesday post "Official FR Drinking Thread" so we could together drown our common disappointments into oblivion.
FReepers seem to be moving into three distinct groups. The first are those that have always supported McCain, a lot or partially. There are those that don't like McCain but are willing to support him because they believe they will get some of what they want or to defeat what the see as the more critical danger, Obama or Clinton. The there's the third group, those that viscerally dislike McCain and vow never to vote for him for any reason.
The actions and motivation for support from the first two groups seem obvious...they would rather see McCain in the White House than a dem. But for the life of me I cannot understand some of the actions of the third.
Allow me to explain.
I understand you dislike McCain and the reasons why. He is far too liberal on many issues, he has stabbed conservatives in the back several times and he is too cozy with the dems. These are all defensible reasons to not vote for him or to vote third party and you have every right to vote as you see fit and for whatever reasons you hold. What I don't understand is why some here are making such concerted efforts to dissuade others from voting for or supporting him.
As flawed as McCain is there is no way a logical case can be made that we would be better off under Obama or Hillary (O&H). Even on most issues where McCain is closer to the left than to us, O&H are much farther to the left than he is and would do much more damage than McCain. On the issues where he is not, the WOT, taxes, abortion, etc., the differences are stark and this does not even take into count extended issues like judicial appointments.
So why are you working so hard, so viscerlly, so nasty, to turn votes against McCain? If you truly feel as you do than go sit out November or cast your vote for your 3rd party candidate. That makes sense. What doesn't make sense is why you push for a McCain and GOP loss.
It may be as simple as "misery loves company". It may be that you validate your own position by getting others to believe as you do. It may be that there are some dem propaganda plants on FR. I don't know but I sure would like to and I know others do as well.
I don’t think anyone here has trashed McCain for his military service, although there are some who have over time.
Good men can do very bad things. Since his military years, John has IMO and the OoMOs.
Judus was a disciple of Christ. A man honored to be one of the chosen twelve. Even a guy like that could screw up. If so, why not McCain?
I cannot support him any more than I could support John Murtha, dispite their differences, and because both men did things that destroyed my respect for them.
You really did nail it in post #273. I can’t imagine a more thorough or cogent explanation for conservative opposition to McCain. The list of examples could go on a lot longer but that would only be belaboring the point.
Thank you. And thanks for your support for the MIA folks and their families.

Quite Welcome,,,
It’s personal with me,,,
That’s why I wear a black hat...
If I were entering the oval office, I would have a firmed up plan to address the condition of our universities.
I would demand some equitable netrality on those campuses with regard to party affiliation.
There’s no excuse for these universities having 80 plus percent of their tenured professors registered as democrats, not after those folks demanding equlity for women and minorities. Time to anti up folks. Either you believe in equality or you don’t. Let’s see them waffle on that in public.
Good for you.
From his post I have concluded somewhere in outer-space.
Excellent, D1. Just EXCELLENT!
It may be your best yet. :-)
Thank you.
That womans eye’s looks like she’s on drugs again.
Bravo!!
Bob, I have no proof for this, but I believe a majority of people who threaten not to vote are among the 50% of those who do not vote anyway.
We've got approx 250 days for people to sober up and put their country's interest ahead of party politics and self-importance.
You are either ignorant, naive, or a flippant liberal. Or possibly some combination of the above.
You may be some of both!
There is a lot of baying going on and principles are important, but they are numerous and one or two don’t trump giving up all of them to make a point. That is what the abolute types, like you, are doing - throwing the baby out with the bath water. Your position is shameful and self-serving, one that will impact the security of America and may forever change the course of the Supreme Court based on the appointments that are projected to be needed in the next 4-8 years.
Do we forget that this is supposedly the party of individuality? With all the group-think being promoted around here I’m almost wondering if I didn’t wake up and find myself in the Democrat party.
Ultimately, everyone will vote according to their conscience. If they choose to vote for the lesser of two evils, then they will vote for McCain; if they choose otherwise, they may throw their vote away on a third-party candidate or not vote at all. Either way, there is no need to jump on the McCain bandwagon just yet, there’s 8 months for people to decide what they want to do.
Me? I probably won’t vote for McCain, and before anyone gets too hysterical on me, realize that McCain has zero chance of winning my state - regardless of what I do. I will, however, work to get good conservatives elected in the House, that seems like a much more promising mode of operation for me.
Then there are times like this, when one seems to connect. It’s just my passionate defense of the ideology I have come to believe in almost as firmly as I do God. I believe that conservatism is the road map God would have us follow.
Our founding fathers referenced God in their writings quite generously. It is evident they felt pretty much as I do about our principles.
I appreciate the kind comments, and look at the incept date of every person who expresses them. When old timers pipe up, I appreciate it very much. When newbies do, I get a little nervous.
Most of the support here was from old timers, and that is gratifying.
You take care.
Even more interesting if he won. How delusional will folks become in order to justify McCain doing what McCain does and will do?
Thank you CalCowGirl. I do appreciate it.
Thank you.
I understand, especially after Tuesday’s debate, just how awful the opposition is. Looking at the number of votes cast in each primary its clear that the democratic base is on fire for Obama. The larger problem is that the republicans are not united. Some suggest that a Obama win in November will unite the republicans against a common foe. Well unity would be a welcome sight after the last 7 years of Bush hating, free spending by a republican congress. See this is about the kind of country my granddaughter will be left with. God help us.
With respect,
Yeah, I know what the polls say, but the numbers just don’t match the actual vote totals for the primaries. Did you see how many Democrats voted as compared to how many Republicans? Then subtract all those cross over votes for McCain that are not going to be there in November.
He can’t win.
