Despite what the pundits, talking heads, and self-annoited experts say about the Republican race, it is more muddled and more up in the air than at any time since Iowa.
Why?
Because 60 percent of the Republican Party is against John McCain.
And the more a dour Tim Russert or an arrogant Chris Mathews says that, the Republican race is, for all intents and purposes, over, or this one, it is very hard to see how John McCain can be stopped, the more agitated conservatives get.
That translates to we lefty pundits who dominate the TV airwaves want McCain so we will just proclaim him the inevitable nominee.
But conservative GOP voters are rebelling against McCain; yes, he gets moderate Republicans and independents who come into the GOP primaries. But the base conservatives are voting against McCain.
So I ask you this question: How can the Republican Party, with a huge base of conservatives, nominate a candidate who hates them and who they despise?
This is the crux of the dilemma that is ripping the GOP apart now. Ann Coulters "Hannity & Colmes" diatribe was more than amusing. It raised this question: Who do conservatives hate more, John McCain or Hillary Clinton?
The question, more than any answer, is instructive: The fact that we are even talking about this shows how divided we Republicans are and how unaccepting of John McCain we will be.
We feel like he is being jammed down our throat by the left, and by the same inside-the-beltway GOP establishment that has been, frankly, wrong on just about everything from amnesty to Dubai Ports World.
The two candidates opposing McCain are both having difficulty cobbling together enough support on their own to defeat McCain; they are splitting the conservative vote and enabling a moderate-to-liberal win.
And Huckabee is clearly in the tank for McCain. Yesterdays rigged convention in West Virginia was designed to deny Mitt Romney a Romney Wins West Virginia headline running all day long on cable TV. While within the rules, it was a petty, ugly example of the "real McCain" at work.
As the so-called GOP front-runner he should be above that kind of thing. But it tells us he is still more afraid of Romney than he is of Huckabee. Therefore, conservatives are increasingly going to rally to Romney from here on out.
And what Romney now needs to do is simple: pick an upcoming state a crucial one and make it a mano-a-mano race, Romney vs. McCain, and win it!
It is time Romney beats Mccain one-on-one because if he cannot, then McCain will win the nomination by default.
But if Romney draws the line in the sand and beats McCain, then we have a new race on our hands. The conservatives will rally to Romney and McCain could still be stopped.
So, Mitt, get going and fast.
Your task is a difficult one: take on not just McCain but the entire D.C. establishment.
Let it all out . . . get angry; show some passion. Embrace the talk-radio hosts, as they represent the GOP base.
Take on McCain and squash him, and soon, maybe in Ohio.
Make the economy the issue.
Do us all a favor.
As I’ve said all along, the Country needs Duncan Hunter. It has only become more obvious with each passing day.
I guess that is why McLame has been telling us over and over and over and over and over how he is a Reagan conservative.
FRED THOMPSON!!
We fear Romney may betray us. But he at least is campaigning on the Reagan legacy. We know McCain/Huckabee will betray us. Both of them are currently campaign on betraying at least some Conservative principals.
Or do you believe Mr $ 50. a gallon gas tax hike McCain or Mr Nation wide smoking ban endorsed by the teachers union Huckabee are going to magically morph into Conservatives if they get elected?
Name for me 3 politicians who won and election and moved to the right in the last 70 years? Both your guys start father Left then Romny does. Actually believe they are going to move any way back towards you if elected?
And, he ought to mention his other advisor, the former MEXICAN ADVISOR to Vincente Fox, who is a dual citizen.
Funny, conservatives saying they'll vote Hillary over McCain to make a point, dems saying they'll vote mccain to spite Hill. Looks like it'll break out even in the end. Funny.
Heritage Foundation..... endorsed Romney.

Get over it.
Mitt is the only candidate that can keep the GOP as a party where the conservative voice matters.
bull
So are the democRats. That is the only way the Clintons got elected in '92 and '96, when most voters voted against them.
Mitt has had a year to “get going” and has proven over and over again to be a colossal dud as a national candidate. Unless something serious healthwise happens to McCain, he’s the nominee.
Whatta bunch of sad looking liberals.
It’s a real long shot, but not 100% impossible. It’ll be interesting to see what Romney does at CPAC tomorrow and afterwards.
My Guess:
Louisiana goes Huckabee, continuing Mikes domination of the South. (I grew up there)
Kansas goes McCain, based on Missouri.
And Washington I’m guessing will go for the Romney.
Wrong, Romney RAISED fees/taxes more per year than Huckabee and Huckabee cut taxes FAR more than Romney did.
Huckabee extensively cut taxes are reformed the tax code in Arkansas. He:
* Pushed through a Democrat legislature the first, major broad based tax cuts in the state's history.
* Pushed through a Democrat legislature an $80 million tax cut package.
* Cut the state's capital gains tax by 25%.
* Established a Property Taxpayers' Bill of Rights
* Limited the increase in property taxes to 10% a year for individuals and 5% per taxing unit
* Eliminated the income tax for families below the poverty line.
* Increased the standard deductions.
* Eliminated the marriage penalty.
* Eliminated bracket creep by indexing the income taxes to inflation, thereby preventing taxpayers from moving into a higher bracket when their paychecks increase due to inflations.
* Doubled the child care tax credit.
* Eliminated capital gains tax on the sale of a home.
Further, Huckabee left his state with surplus while Massachusetts is drowining in debt because of Willard's socialized health care plan:

(CNSNews.com) - According to recent reports, the cost of Massachusetts' health insurance mandate will rise 85 percent, or $400 million, in 2009. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R), meanwhile, has been on the presidential campaign trail praising the program he put into place.
I have to say that THAT is an idea whose time may come. When Huck was surprising everyone last night, I couldn’t help think how ironic it would be, if good ol’ Huck decided that maybe he didn’t NEED to be mccain’s errand boy anymore ; }
tatt
I am one of the conservatives voices. Thanks so much for the respect, LOL.
yup,my point ‘zactly! check out the dem results in mn yesterday.....MN no likey clintons
Two problems with your scenario:
McCain has more delegates than Mitt and Huck combined.
Mitt cannot command his delegates to vote for Huck.
