Despite what the pundits, talking heads, and self-annoited experts say about the Republican race, it is more muddled and more up in the air than at any time since Iowa.
Why?
Because 60 percent of the Republican Party is against John McCain.
And the more a dour Tim Russert or an arrogant Chris Mathews says that, the Republican race is, for all intents and purposes, over, or this one, it is very hard to see how John McCain can be stopped, the more agitated conservatives get.
That translates to we lefty pundits who dominate the TV airwaves want McCain so we will just proclaim him the inevitable nominee.
But conservative GOP voters are rebelling against McCain; yes, he gets moderate Republicans and independents who come into the GOP primaries. But the base conservatives are voting against McCain.
So I ask you this question: How can the Republican Party, with a huge base of conservatives, nominate a candidate who hates them and who they despise?
This is the crux of the dilemma that is ripping the GOP apart now. Ann Coulters "Hannity & Colmes" diatribe was more than amusing. It raised this question: Who do conservatives hate more, John McCain or Hillary Clinton?
The question, more than any answer, is instructive: The fact that we are even talking about this shows how divided we Republicans are and how unaccepting of John McCain we will be.
We feel like he is being jammed down our throat by the left, and by the same inside-the-beltway GOP establishment that has been, frankly, wrong on just about everything from amnesty to Dubai Ports World.
The two candidates opposing McCain are both having difficulty cobbling together enough support on their own to defeat McCain; they are splitting the conservative vote and enabling a moderate-to-liberal win.
And Huckabee is clearly in the tank for McCain. Yesterdays rigged convention in West Virginia was designed to deny Mitt Romney a Romney Wins West Virginia headline running all day long on cable TV. While within the rules, it was a petty, ugly example of the "real McCain" at work.
As the so-called GOP front-runner he should be above that kind of thing. But it tells us he is still more afraid of Romney than he is of Huckabee. Therefore, conservatives are increasingly going to rally to Romney from here on out.
And what Romney now needs to do is simple: pick an upcoming state a crucial one and make it a mano-a-mano race, Romney vs. McCain, and win it!
It is time Romney beats Mccain one-on-one because if he cannot, then McCain will win the nomination by default.
But if Romney draws the line in the sand and beats McCain, then we have a new race on our hands. The conservatives will rally to Romney and McCain could still be stopped.
So, Mitt, get going and fast.
Your task is a difficult one: take on not just McCain but the entire D.C. establishment.
Let it all out . . . get angry; show some passion. Embrace the talk-radio hosts, as they represent the GOP base.
Take on McCain and squash him, and soon, maybe in Ohio.
Make the economy the issue.
Do us all a favor.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Are RINO Romney and John Kerry brothers ?????
O boy; another huck bot.
He has set an even more dangerous agenda for retreat from Iraq than Hillary. Do you not realize that he holds views that are even more liberal than hers? The man actually voted for a form of infanticide. Read the following article for the FACTS: http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=18647 He wants to hold a “summit” with Muslims when he takes office... And the list goes on.
I have seen your same sentiments posted in this forum numerous times.
If she is bad for this country, based on his beliefs, he is worse. I just don’t understand the logic.
LOL, my thoughts exactly!
While you sit here continuing to beat the annoying Romney is the Anti-Christ drum, the Republic is likely lost.
We now have a likely candidate that NO principled conservative could vote for. We will end up with 4 years of Hillary or Obama because McCain (thankfully) can’t beat them.
It is a sad day when Hillary becomes the lesser of the evils.
I could hold my nose and vote for Huck. Not for McCain.
Look we know what Mctrainwreck is capable of with his liberal across the isle fiends, ted, ried ,pelosi, and specter and we know Hillary because we experienced her husbands glorious 8 years of nothing with one new added feature, she will be garnishing your paycheck for national healthcare and we dont have a clue what Obama will do and niether does he until his liberal puppet masters, ted, reid, pelosi and kerry get his ear. So who is left? Huckleberry? I would think Mitt has it over the huckster.Again we are at the lesser of two.
bttt
Not even remotely accurate.
I can't stand any of them, the republic IS lost, at least for now. A pox on all their houses.
Do the simple math.
You need 1,191 delegates to win.
Right now McCain has 680 Delegates.
Romney has 270
Huckabee has 176.
There are 1254 left to be awarded.
McCain needs 511
Romney needs 921
Huckabee needs 1,015
Even if Romney drops out right now, Huckabee cannot win. He is too far behind in the delegate count. He would need to win almost every single remaining state to win. He cannot do it. He has neither the money, the organization nor the political support to do it. Huckabees campaign is dead. It cannot be saved.
Even for Romney it is an almost impossible long shot but with his money, media support and organization, he has a chance. Not a very good one but his shot is doable. Huckabee doesn't even have a shot at all. So, your only viable remaining candidate is Romeny who YOU all hate simple because of his religion. Way to go boys. Way to rip out your tounge by the root to spite your face.
If Huckabee is smart, he would figure out that he will not win as VP on a McCain ticket, but he would win as VP on a Romney ticket. If Huckabee were to make a deal with Romney, that would sure stop McCAin.
Romney has earned 3 delegates to McCains 146 in California so far. He only got 21 to McCain’s 17 in Mass. There is no way he can get 75%+ of what’s left.
EVERY Huck voter I know, and I know a LOT of them, is a FAMILY VALUES voter!

Why would you think they would vote for an abortion and same sex marriage pusher like RINO Romney, then ?????
Johnnie, I really don't know why the voters have not been more receptive to Romney. Speaking for myself, I see him as a guy (1) who WAS willing to say or do pretty much whatever it took to become governor of a very liberal state and (2) who IS now willing to say or do pretty much whatever it takes to become president.
What is the attraction? Why am I supposed to get excited about him?
That scenario works against McCain. He cannot win 1 out of every 3 states and still get to 1191 delegates. He’s needs 1 out of every 2 states.
Romney is in the role of spoiler between now and the convention. He must hope McCain fails to reach 1191 delegates and that he can convince the unpledged and soft-pledged delegates to support him at the convention instead of McCain.
Romney can point to the fact that McCain used Huckabee as a stalking horse to split the conservative vote.
If yesterday is any indication, Romney will come in third in LA. and Kansas, and second in Washington. That won’t help him much.
Do you subscribe to the mindset that repeating a lie enough times make it true ? I've known Romney 14 years. He's a liberal. He's a liar. He's an opportunist. He has no ethics and morals in the pursuit of power. None. He is not, never has been, and never will be a Conservative. He is a Clintonista.
Is that his claim to fame? LOL, amazing.
The media is manipulating this election cycle like I have never seen before. It is frightening to put it mildly!
McCain is winning because of superior strategy, not tactics. He has all his chess pieces in place and there isn’t much room to maneuver. Romney’s tactical advantages of lots of money and talk show host support can’t really do all that much against a campaign that has already taken this into account.
McCain will most likely be the nominee so if you care about conservative principles, the best way to achieve this is to actually try to talk and listen to him and get him to listen to you, not antagonize him and marginalize yourselves.
