Reagan Library Republican Presidential Debate: January 30, 2008

SIMI VALLEY, California (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopefuls will face off Wednesday night without a familiar face as ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is expected to drop out and endorse front-runner Sen. John McCain.

The remaining candidates will take the stage in a debate -- sponsored by CNN, the Los Angeles Times and Politico -- beginning at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday.

The event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, follows McCain's Tuesday night win in the Florida primary.

McCain topped former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 36 percent to 31 percent in the hotly contested race.

Giuliani placed third with 15 percent of the vote, followed closely by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 14 percent, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas was fifth with 3 percent.

Giuliani is expected to end his White House bid and endorse McCain at a campaign event in California later Wednesday, Republican Party sources said.

Minus Giuliani, the debate will be a four-candidate affair -- McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Paul -- with CNN's Anderson Cooper moderating.

I’m not convinced that Nancy’s positions are all that different from Arnold. She was always a bit more liberal than Ronaldus.

No disrespect to our First Lady. She did a hell of a job taking care of her Ronnie.

Decay. Physical, mental, and moral. He's completely unfit for employment, any employment, yet we're supposed to make him President and Leader of the Free World???

I can't argue with that!

Before college, Romney earned a draft deferral by going to France for a two-year missionary tour with the Mormon Church.

CNN is nauseating...they couldn’t wait for 10:00 so they could go back to Obama/Clinton....even Bill Bennett was disappointing.

McDole’s Military service was 40 years ago. I see little that means he can be President tomorrow. The only way McDole wins is IF the hate factor for Clinton is bigger.

Huckabee is McCain’s spoiler to siphon votes away from Romney. Exactly. Imho, that was/is the whole purpose of his campaign.

Thats John McCain, saying what the media likes to hear. Shooting off his big mouth.

I say to John McCain, Kiss my rear.

McCain ....he’s the the kind of guy at the bar, a “know it all”, shooting off his mouth, and when they take it outside, you can’t wait to see him take a good head punch and go down cold. Justice.

I’m in the South and so far I haven’t met ANYONE who is going to vote for McCain. All Romney people since Fred dropped out.

You obviously don't know anyone in Florida.

I, for one, enjoyed the sparring. I DO want to see passion, courage of conviction, unwilingness to be lied about...I love Dubya, but the man took wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too many direct hits before he did anything close to returning fire. Whomever is our Republican nominee has got to stop this willingness to be a sitting target.

Actually, at the time, the Boston Globe considered Romney and McCain to be of one mind with the President:

“[Romney’s] position aligns him not only with Bush but also with Senator John McCain of Arizona, one of Romney’s leading rivals for the Republican presidential nomination. McCain has called for sending more troops to Iraq for more than three years, and has pronounced himself supportive of the president’s decision for a ``surge’’ in the troop level. For both Romney and McCain, casting their lot with the president on Iraq is a gamble that carries political peril. Unlike the other potential GOP candidates — who have remained mum on how they’d handle Iraq — they are now on record in supporting a controversial move that critics argue will likely worsen the situation in Iraq.”

Voting for Romney here in TN. I’m hoping FRed was so disgusted with McCain during this debate that he will come out and endorse Romney tomorrow!

I admire and respect his military service and suffering, but his day has passed and too many Republicans don’t see that.

Sad but true.
