Reagan Library Republican Presidential Debate: January 30, 2008

SIMI VALLEY, California (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopefuls will face off Wednesday night without a familiar face as ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is expected to drop out and endorse front-runner Sen. John McCain.

The remaining candidates will take the stage in a debate -- sponsored by CNN, the Los Angeles Times and Politico -- beginning at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday.

The event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, follows McCain's Tuesday night win in the Florida primary.

McCain topped former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 36 percent to 31 percent in the hotly contested race.

Giuliani placed third with 15 percent of the vote, followed closely by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 14 percent, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas was fifth with 3 percent.

Giuliani is expected to end his White House bid and endorse McCain at a campaign event in California later Wednesday, Republican Party sources said.

Minus Giuliani, the debate will be a four-candidate affair -- McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Paul -- with CNN's Anderson Cooper moderating.

My point on Romney is that he spending the money and cannot win a contested Republican primary.

Have we even had a Republican primary yet? According to CNN, 20% of the people voting in the GOP primary in Florida were either Democrats or Independents.

The more Mitt says McCain/Kennedy the better.

That point cannot be made enough! Of course McCain will dodge the question..and name drop his way out of it.

You know, it just struck me...

This is all George Bush’s fault.

No, no. I’m serious. As fine a man as Dick Chaney is, he should NOT have run for VEEP for Bush’s second term, since he made it clear he was absolutely NOT going to run for President. The VEEP position could have been intelligently used to groom a candidate for THIS election, and THAT guy would have had enough experience and public exposure to give him a leg up, and we wouldn’t have had this parade of losers we’re currently having to deal with.

I think Romney is nailing down my vote with his answer on illegals—get their affairs in order and go home. . .

He made me proud in this debate. Loved his answers on everything. He pushed back on McCain too...loved it!

Look you can hate McCain for many things, but he is telling the truth on this one.

No, he is not.

That is what I told my wife tonight. It has got to the point where I can’t stand the man. Tonight just reinforced my decision. I will vote for the other good Republican candidates and the other issues but will not pull the lever for McQueeg.

I cannot vote for McCain.

I will not vote for McCain.

He is not the future of the Republican party, except for a possible purging so that a strong conservative can emerge.

Sorry. I cannot get on board with McCain. If that’s the direction of the party, it goes without me.

Same here. I registered as a Republican so long ago that I have no idea how to 'unregister'. But I will the second McCain gets the nomination.

I voted for him too. As for Nancy, I wish her staff would look out for her better than that. That guy doesn’t deserve to be in the same building with her, let alone right next to her.

As for your take on it, I agree that Nancy probably agreed to it. Someone should have a little talk with her IMO.

He deserves respect for his service. That respect doesn't carry over to his policy positions or his nasty freaking disposition.

Exactly.
