Reagan Library Republican Presidential Debate: January 30, 2008

SIMI VALLEY, California (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopefuls will face off Wednesday night without a familiar face as ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is expected to drop out and endorse front-runner Sen. John McCain.

The remaining candidates will take the stage in a debate -- sponsored by CNN, the Los Angeles Times and Politico -- beginning at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday.

The event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, follows McCain's Tuesday night win in the Florida primary.

McCain topped former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 36 percent to 31 percent in the hotly contested race.

Giuliani placed third with 15 percent of the vote, followed closely by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 14 percent, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas was fifth with 3 percent.

Giuliani is expected to end his White House bid and endorse McCain at a campaign event in California later Wednesday, Republican Party sources said.

Minus Giuliani, the debate will be a four-candidate affair -- McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Paul -- with CNN's Anderson Cooper moderating.

I’m defending Reagan, and you call that rhetoric that belongs at KOS or DU.

You loonies are on the loose tonight.

I became pro-life, after GOD reached out, and told me that everything that I had believed was wrong...

He told you that too? I thought I was the only one.

Most of it sounded like whining that he wasn’t getting enough time. He came off as the little brother trying to play with the big boys.

Normally I avoid these. Too much of conservatives flaming conservatives.

However, McCain is not a conservative.

“McCain seems old and angry. No way, Z-visa Jose.”

McCain just last week said he would sign the amnesty bill if it came to his desk, but said it won’t come to his desk because the people want the fence built first.

Tonight McCain said he would not sign the bill if it came to his desk because it won’t come to his desk. Do you all make any sense out of that?? I do, and it means McCain will lie but will sign the biggest amnesty bill ever as soon as he finishes getting the fairness doctrine in place! That way the people will know NOTHING about it until after it is passed!

I pray that all real conservatives and all moderate conservatives will help save out country and vote for Mitt Romney on Super Tuesday! Just whom on that stage do you think a Fred Thompson or a Ronald Reagan would endorse? I believe after considering the options they would endorse Mitt Romney!

McCain constantly tries to take credit for the surge away from General Petreaus.

He just stayed out of the McCain/Romney catfight. He’s looking for the No. 2 spot.

“Any unbiased review of the debate tonight would praise Huckabee’s performance.”

He did very well, if not remarkable. He stands to pick up some votes, I think, if McCain hurt himself badly enough tonight. Even after being boo’d by the entire audience, he WOULD NOT LET IT GO!!!

However impolitic Ranger Walker was to say it, could he have had a good point? Combined with the temper and the instability this is troublesome.

Why don’t we conduct a FR poll and see how many Freepers would vote for McCain over Paul? Game?

Forget it bub, McCain would win hands down.

Why don't we do a real vote - with no independents or crossover Dems - in a head-to-head matchup between Paul and McCain. Paul would have the nomination sealed by now, and lord help McCain if he and Paul are debating. Paul already kicked his ass with the economic question last week. ROFL

If I were Mitt, I’d start thinking about running as an independent. He’s got the cash to do it

Great idea. I sure hope so. The thought of a McCain/Hillary race is making me sick. I just hope its Romney who goes independent rather than Paul. Its atrocious how the RNC Establishment just bent over backwards for McCain the last 2 weeks.
