Reagan Library Republican Presidential Debate: January 30, 2008

SIMI VALLEY, California (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopefuls will face off Wednesday night without a familiar face as ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is expected to drop out and endorse front-runner Sen. John McCain.

The remaining candidates will take the stage in a debate -- sponsored by CNN, the Los Angeles Times and Politico -- beginning at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday.

The event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, follows McCain's Tuesday night win in the Florida primary.

McCain topped former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 36 percent to 31 percent in the hotly contested race.

Giuliani placed third with 15 percent of the vote, followed closely by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 14 percent, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas was fifth with 3 percent.

Giuliani is expected to end his White House bid and endorse McCain at a campaign event in California later Wednesday, Republican Party sources said.

Minus Giuliani, the debate will be a four-candidate affair -- McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Paul -- with CNN's Anderson Cooper moderating.

About McCain: he so reminds me a woman who once won a minor beauty pageant and is living on the glory the rest of her life. His continual use of platitudes, cliches and his past utterances did not serve him well tonight.

I admire and respect his military service and suffering, but his day has passed and too many Republicans don’t see that.

That may be premature; he can still think of running as a Republican. The debates are having a greater and greater impact as the campaign goes on.

I agree. Mitt was heads and shoulders above everyone tonight. Literally and figuratively.

Yeah, that would be an abortion I could approve of. Getting rid of McNasty.

Your’e right. McCain was lame. And he had that smirk on his face all night. Huckabee was eloquent, but talked more generally, while Romney nailed the issues. Watching some of CNN post coverage, of course they’re rallying behind McLame.

...and he deserves respect.

Not from me. He wants to merge my homeland with the third world. He has only my contempt and loathing.

How will this “largest squadron in the Navy” business play in the general election? We already know he was boosted into the position through favoritism, bypassing the normal progression. But what did he do when in charge. What did those under his command think of him. I ask this question because we can’t find anyone who was in his West Point class or who worked closely with him or under his command thinks highly of General Wesley Clark?

Romney run as an independent? He cannot win a contested primary in his own party even when he outspends his opponents 10-1.

The dimpled Governor did better tonight than at any debate to date.

I think Nancy should endorse Huckabee, for his great, great answer concerning her husband.

“The man has served his country with honor, whether you agree with him or not, and he deserves respect.”

Yeah. He did something honorable a few decades ago. Evidently, that exhausted his supply on honor, since he’s been nothing but an egotistic, unstable, back-stabbing anti-American creep ever since.

But, yeah. Sure. He served his country with honor, all right!

just seems to me, romney appears to be far and away the best candidate. a governor, , executive experience, very successful in the private sector, better looking, a better speaker, educated, and a winner. can’t say i knew romney as a governor.

mccain appears as just another career politician.

You’re name is John McCain.
You are in a debate.
Those sitting next to you are not on your side.
Put that silly smile on your face and try not to look too cockeyed.
