ADHD Breakthrough
by: Amanda Busse, January 09, 2008
A new study suggests that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children may be a matter of maturity.
According to the study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, ADHD in children is caused when portions of the brain mature at a slower pace than normal. For many, the condition eventually normalizes and nearly 80 percent of children grow out of the disorder, the researchers found.
Researchers used a new image-analysis technique to measure the thickening and thinning of thousands of cortex sites in 223 children with ADHD and 223 children without the disorder for the study. Scientists found that the cortex sites in children with the disorder reached peak thickness three years later, on average, than those in children without the disorder.
There has been debate about whether ADHD is a delay or deviance from normal brain development, the lead author of the study, Dr. Philip Shaw, told the Los Angeles Times, This study comes down strongly in favor of delay.
The cause for the delay in brain maturation which causes ADHD is unknown, but there is evidence that both genetic and environmental factors influence brain development.
At early ages, environmental factors that influence the inattention and lack of self control associated with ADHD may include certain parenting and teaching techniques, according to another study published in the same month in Developmental Psychology. The study found that self-control and maturity levels were affected by family life and filtered into the classroom setting.

This is the shining truth on this issue.
Darn NEA teachers can't handle a boy being a boy, and if they can't get him to act like a girl and sit still, they drug him.
Meanwhile, boys with REAL problems can be dismissed as "BS" because of all of the false diagnosis.
LOL! That’s the truth! Several of my friends went to the local Catholic school. Believe me, no one I knew had ADD. I never misbehaved in school. Most of my teachers were friends with my parents and/or were members of our church, or were in my mom’s clubs. I knew I would get “told on” in a heartbeat. My parents were firm believers in following up with punishment at home whether it was talking out of turn in class or a bad grade.
If this is true, the bastards who have turned our children into drug addicts as a result of their cookie-cutter philosophies deserve to be horse-whipped.
Maybe there remains a voice of reason among the social-engineer class, after all.
I've gotta agree, for the most part. Years ago I had a co-worker whose teenage son was "diagnosed" with this. She put him into swimming at school. It wore the kid out in the evenings, and things improved almost overnight. Other kids I've seen with ADHD have been coddled and girlymanned or had issues with parents divorcing. The ones who subjected their kids to drugs happened to all be angry Democrats. I know it's anecdotal, but that's what I've seen.
I once questioned my husband about our nephew when he was younger. He asked, “Have you seen him when he’s not medicated?” I had not. He said he literally could not stop moving.
I have four active boys. I know the damage they can do. One of them also has ADD tendencies. I saw tendencies because we never got him diagnosed, since we would just be working with him the same as we do now. He’s very bright and will focus on mechanical or building things, but he does have to be talked to differently so he will pay attention.
It’s BS; period.
If they continue dosing these kids with the idea of making them fit the mold until such time as the cortex finishes development they have compounded their crime, IMO.
And there are several different kinds and degrees of ADD/ADHD. Most do outgrow it.
Some live with it their whole lives!
OK, Mr. Medical expert tell us all about it.
Nope,
it’s not BS...
Too many brain scan show otherwise.
“Many adults who have been affected are still undiagnosed and suffer from ADD.”
What a non-sequitur; how do you diagnose “undiagnosed?”
Lemme guess - - they discovered that "ADHD" was invented in the '80s as an excuse for selling pharmaceuticals and keeping kids medicated in school?
that is an interesting point.
Does medicating boys during their physical brain developement mean their inteligence is reduced by adulthood?
Why would teachers want to creat a generation of less inteligent boys by design?
The whole concept of behavioral disorder or disease springs from the notion that there is a single behavior pattern that is ideal; using the same logic, all refrigerators ought to be pink.
AMEN!!!!! I went to a two room school,,,4 grades in one room and NEVER had any act ups like these kids today!!
Don’t go there Shbox....
that’s how my Dad tried to cure GBB’s ADHD-—
And now we have well,
GBB :(
How are we going to stop them from getting guns if we can’t dope them up?
I thought so too and was one of the most BS callers around until my now 10 year old daughter ( out of 5 kids so I have a point of reference ). I am a believer. Think what you want it is real just over diagnosed.
I admit that I felt the hard side of that type of cure more than once in school.
Seemed to stick. 8^)
