ADHD Breakthrough
by: Amanda Busse, January 09, 2008
A new study suggests that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children may be a matter of maturity.
According to the study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, ADHD in children is caused when portions of the brain mature at a slower pace than normal. For many, the condition eventually normalizes and nearly 80 percent of children grow out of the disorder, the researchers found.
Researchers used a new image-analysis technique to measure the thickening and thinning of thousands of cortex sites in 223 children with ADHD and 223 children without the disorder for the study. Scientists found that the cortex sites in children with the disorder reached peak thickness three years later, on average, than those in children without the disorder.
There has been debate about whether ADHD is a delay or deviance from normal brain development, the lead author of the study, Dr. Philip Shaw, told the Los Angeles Times, This study comes down strongly in favor of delay.
The cause for the delay in brain maturation which causes ADHD is unknown, but there is evidence that both genetic and environmental factors influence brain development.
At early ages, environmental factors that influence the inattention and lack of self control associated with ADHD may include certain parenting and teaching techniques, according to another study published in the same month in Developmental Psychology. The study found that self-control and maturity levels were affected by family life and filtered into the classroom setting.

ADHD = BS
ADHD is overdiagnosed, but not BS.
Well, duh!
Most moms, teachers, et al recognize especially in their little boys, they are behind girls in emotional and sometimes physical maturity and do better delaying school or being judged against a class of other boys, not girls, who can focus, hold a pencil, speak and write earlier.
Not a fair contest when younger but they definitely catch up later. What they DO NOT need, is to be labled by schools with a "disorder."
Bogus science!!!!
Exactly.
Great news. Combating attention deficit disorder can be difficult, understanding it is the key. Many adults who have been affected are still undiagnosed and suffer from ADD.
Our modern diets have much too much omega-6 (bad), and far too little omega-3 (good).
The normal supplements don’t fix a deficiency that is several years old. Mega doses of highly purified stuff will make a big difference in a few weeks.
[See Omegabrite.com (No, I don’t have a $$$ interest. My son completely changed his focus and mood with Omega-3 and nothing else.)]
Shocked, I’m totally shocked!
This means an entire industry is doomed!
How will we justify doping up our kids? (sarc/)
It apparently doesn’t get studied any longer but earlier studies in the late 80s showed by ‘ADD’ or ‘ADHD’ was predominantly in males with above average intelligence.
Thankfully we drugged the living sh!t out of them or who knows how many of them would have grown up to vote for Republicans!
Hence the phrase uttered by sisters everywhere:
Why don’t you just grow up!
In the ‘50s the nuns in charge of 45+ size class rooms in my grammer school had no problems controlling fidgety brats.
>>Thankfully we drugged the living sh!t out of them or who knows how many of them would have grown up to vote for Republicans!<<
Ding, ding, ding!
We have a winner!

This was reported about six months ago. (Not faulting you for the report) My guess is the medicating of our children has risen considerably since that report.
As a profession, I am seriously in doubt of the brain sciences segment of our society.
While I agree that some problems require medication, it's my opinion that normal kids are being medically abused at an alarming rate.
Children don't come in a cookie cutter mold. They are individuals. Some will act out. Somehow our society and those children survived prior to the policy of drugging them into a stupor.
Agreed. Not BS
In other words,
CHILDREN are not simply short adults.
In the 50s the nuns in charge of 45+ size class rooms in my grammer school had no problems controlling fidgety brats.
Perhaps the threat of physical pain hastens maturity?
Sure it is.
What they call “hyperactivity” I call being a normal little boy. Very active.
Hyper compared to little girls?
Your nephew could not have been any more “hyper” than I was and they would have definitely pushed to drug the living sh*t out of me.
Your nephew had a rough time because people around him were not up to the task of coping with him, and the teachers today are clueless how to teach or handle him without the crutch of drugging the little guttersnipes up.
