:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
U.S. to Offer Turkey Help on PKK

The U.S. is to offer Turkey a package of measures to dissuade Ankara from mounting a large-scale military incursion into Iraq to attack PKK Kurdish guerrillas, who have killed scores of Turkish soldiers in recent weeks.

Ahead of a meeting in Washington on Monday between President George W. Bush and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, U.S. officials said Ankara would have to get concrete American help to combat the PKK, which has bases in northern Iraq from where it frequently launches attacks into Turkey.

“Erdogan has to go back with the belief that for whatever reason, the U.S. is serious” about tackling Turkey’s concerns regarding the PKK, said Matthew Bryza, deputy assistant secretary at the U.S. state department responsible for Turkey policy. Full story...

Press Release A071124a
November 24, 2007

Coalition forces rescue kidnap victim; disrupt foreign terrorist facilitators, al-Qaeda financiers; one killed, 10 detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed one terrorist and detained 10 suspects during operations Saturday in central and northern Iraq.

Coalition forces captured a wanted individual southwest of Kirkuk during operations targeting foreign terrorist facilitators. Reports indicate the wanted individual was involved with reorganizing al-Qaeda in Iraq in the Hawija region. During the operation, as Coalition forces approached the target building, they saw several armed men leave the building attempting to evade the ground force. Perceiving hostile intent, Coalition forces called for supporting aircraft to engage, killing one terrorist. Upon entering a nearby building, Coalition forces discovered a man being held in chains, and reports indicate he was being held hostage for $150,000. In addition to the wanted individual, Coalition forces detained three suspects during the operation, two of whom were wounded. The wounded suspects received medical care on site before being detained.

During an operation in central Baghdad, Coalition forces captured a wanted individual believed to be a financier for al-Qaeda in Iraq operations. The wanted individual is allegedly associated with several senior terrorist leaders, including some involved in car-bombing attacks. During the operation, Coalition forces entered a mosque’s surrounding complex, but did not enter the mosque itself. Coalition forces respect Muslim religious sites, and they took great care to ensure the Mosque and surrounding complex were left as they were found. The wanted individual identified himself to Coalition forces and was subsequently detained, along with five other suspects.

“Foreign fighters’ mission is to derail progress in Iraq, and they have no place here,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “These wanted individuals will no longer be able to support al-Qaeda’s operations.”

NATO and Afghan forces kill 65 Taliban - ministry

Published: 11.25.07, 12:34 / Israel News

Afghan and NATO-led forces killed 65 Taliban rebels when they called in air strikes as the insurgents smuggling weapons across the border from Pakistan, the Afghan Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

Afghanistan has seen a steady escalation of violence this year with up to 30 percent more clashes with hard-line Islamist Taliban insurgents fighting to overthrow the pro-Western Afghan government and eject 50,000 foreign troops from the country. (Reuters)

“Iraqi forces launch operation in Kirkuk”
By BILL ROGGIO

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Lion’s Leap is focusing on the Iranian-backed elements of the Mahdi Army and the Special Groups, which target Iraqi governmental officials and US and Iraqi security forces. “The real threat to our troops was the explosive charges that killed many of our men,” said Ghanmi. “Our troops have been provided with new equipment to detect explosive devices and thus these bombs have become under control. ... [T]he most dangerous bombs were those called the Iranian EFP [explosively formed penetrators] of which 24 were confiscated and more were still planted between houses and neighborhoods.””

Meanwhile innocent Christians are slaughtered and if we didn't know better, we'd swear this could happen only in much more primitive times.

Unfortunately I think very few individuals in the media "get it." The jihadis are not fighting because "they hate our freedoms" (how superficial) nor even because the US does give some support to Israel (though that probably does inflame many Muslims who might otherwise be less sympathetic to the radicals).

The real reason they're fighting is that they want to force Islam on the entire world; in other words, Convert or die. Christianity is directly in the crosshairs because of the large number of adherents and because it is very widespread; in the case of other religions, there are either relatively few adherents (Judaism, for example) or they are highly concentrated geographically and therefore less important outside their home countries (Hinduism, Buddhism).

As for this only happening in more primitive times, we have after all been told that persecutions would come. There have been more Christian martyrs in the last hundred years than in the previous two thousand, even leaving out those killed by Muslims. Satan "knows that his time is short" and we can expect more persecutions to come and even increase until the Lord comes again.

Even so, come Lord Jesus.

U.S. intel center wary of terrorist attack
November 25, 2007

The nation's largest intelligence training center changed security measures in May after being warned that Islamist terrorists with the aid of Mexican drug cartels were planning an attack on the facility.

Fort Huachuca changed security measures after sources warned that possibly 60 Afghan and Iraqi terrorists were smuggled into the U.S. through underground tunnels with high powered weapons to attack the post, according to multiple confidential law enforcement documents obtained by The Washington Times.

“A portion of the operatives were in the United States, with the remainder not yet in the United States,” according to one of the documents, an FBI advisory that was disbursed to the Defense Intelligence Agency, Central Intelligence Agency, Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Justice, among numerous other law enforcement agencies throughout the nation. “The Afghanis and Iraqis shaved their beards so as not to appear to be Middle Easterners.”

According to the FBI advisory, each Middle Easterner paid Mexican drug lords $20,000 “or the equivalent in weapons” for the cartel's assistance in smuggling them through tunnels along the border into the U.S. The numerous tunnels supposedly ended at warehouses in Laredo, Texas, and in Arizona.

Lt. Col. Matthew Garner, spokesman for Fort Huachuca, said details regarding the current phase of the investigation or security changes on the post “will not be disclosed.” "We are always taking precautions to ensure that soldiers, family members and civilians that work and live on Fort Huachuca are safe," Mr. Garner said. "With this specific threat we did change some aspects of our security that we did have in place."

According to the FBI report, the weapons associated with the plot were smuggled through a tunnel from Mexico to the U.S.

Syria 'Likely' to Attend Summit, Golan Heights on the Agenda
11/24/07

Syria has apparently changed its position over the weekend and will "almost certainly" send a representative to the Annapolis conference, since the U.S. has clarified that the status of the Golan Heights will be on the agenda. Syrian lawmaker Mohammed Habash made the announcement in an interview on Radio Sawa, an Arabic-language radio station funded by the U.S.

Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said he will be attending but added that he will not cooperate with "theatrics such as handshakes with Israeli leaders." Al-Faisal spoke at an Arab League press conference in Cairo following the decision by the organizations' members Friday to send high-level diplomatic representation to the summit.

"I am not hiding the Saudi position," al-Faisal said. "We hesitated until now about participating. Had we not reached a pan-Arab agreement [on the matter], we would not have participated. But we shall not oppose an Arab consensus, and Saudi Arabia will march with its brothers on the path agreed upon."

Hamas ‘shocked’ at Arab backing of Annapolis moot
Sunday, November 25, 2007

GAZA: Hamas on Saturday condemned a decision by Arab powers to endorse next week’s US-hosted Israeli-Palestinian peace conference, saying the talks would favour the Jewish state’s policies rather than Palestinian demands. Hamas, which refuses to recognise Israel and broke with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas after seizing control of the Gaza Strip in a June civil war, is excluded from the Nov. 27 conference in Annapolis.
