California Fire Battalion Chief - Whoever Did This Knew What They Were Doing

October 22, 2007

Fire officials are now stating that the Orange County Santiago fire was purposely set and there is speculation that other fires may have also been deliberate. See Interactive Map

Fire officials found three separate “points of origin,” all near the intersection of Silverado Canyon Road and Santiago Canyon Road. Two were on one side of the road, and the third was on the other. “Whoever did this knew what they were doing,” said Kris Concepcion, a fire authority battalion chief. Also, the fire traveled 3 miles in its first 20 minutes when it was ignited about 6 p.m. Sunday, he said.

We are NOT implying that the California fires are an act of terrorism however; the threat of pyro-terrorist attacks pose a significant risk to the U.S. and the fires in California and in Greece earlier this year should be a wake-up call.

In 2003 an FBI memo alerted law enforcement agencies that an al-Qaeda terrorist being held in detention had talked of masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires around the western United States.

It was reported that the detainee, who was not identified, said the plan involved three or four people setting wildfires using timed devices in Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming that would detonate in forests and grasslands after the operatives had left the country.

“The detainee believed that significant damage to the U.S. economy would result and once it was realized that the fires were terrorist acts, U.S. citizens would put pressure on the U.S. government to change its policies,” the memo said.

How Can So Many Fires Be By Natural Causes ?

A Local News Radio talk show host in San Diego asked, “how can so many fires, in so many places, in such a short period of time, all be caused by natural causes”.

As we have stated before. If you see anything suspicious, report it to law enforcement immediately.

UPDATE: Video - Officials say arson now suspected in Orange County Fire

UPDATE: From Los Angeles Fox News

“I’m sad to report this is an arson fire,” OCFA Chief Chip Prather announced at an early morning briefing. “There were three separate starts: two on one side of the road and one on the other, and obviously we are actively investigating that.”

Links - A number of blogs and websites have sprung up to report on the fires. We will provide links to a couple we’ve found.

Thank you justa! There are also lots of munitions in the area. We have a number of friends in the area and I am sick just thinking of all this. I am going back and forth between FREEP, SD County Emergency, and a local paper with a blog. I don’t know how to start a new thread, do you think it is needed?

If the Plant issues an emergency shutdown it probably deserves a thread. The main issue is what was their defensive plans in case of a fire line 6-7 miles was coming up from the south ? Were they hoping to have resources available to stop the fire before it hit the weaker distribution lines a few miles inland ? Were they hoping to get help from Camp Pendleton which is being evacuated ? The other relevant issue here is if some of these power lines pop, thousands will lose power for a few days. That brings forth security issues for the blackout areas. I will see if I can find any emergency plans for the reactor in case of fire issues. There has been fires in this area before, but there were plenty of resources available then to handle them.

BTW - I did see the fire engulfing what appeared to be a main communication tower on top of a hill in Camp Pendleton. Wonder what that was for ?

Let’s hope it was old, outdated equipment.

They have closed the 5 Freeway at Camp Pendleton. Embers crossing freeway lots of smoke. Apparently there are Marines still on the base and they are fighting the fire.

The fire that was heading north is called the Horno Fire. Must have started in Horno Canyon or near Horno Hill. Horno means Oven in Spanish. Do not know if those backfires were for this Horno fire or some other fire down south near the 76.

This has not been a good night. It would be nice if the news stations were AWAKE for this and not busy getting their beauty sleep!

Actually, probably a good thing. The sheeple might actually wake up while watching a fire approach a nuclear power plant. Nothing worse then stampeding sheeple.

It looks like the Horno Fire is the Fire that crossed to the west of the 5 freeway. That means it is about 4 miles south of the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant.

How come all the fires seem to be targeting Conservative Counties?

Liberal pyromaniacs torching the forests, hoping for a disaster so they can blame Bush and the war in Iraq for deploying all the National Guards out of California, another Katrina style, MSM con job?

That basically means all public traffic is blocked from entering or traveling through the base area via the 5. Camp Pendleton is now off limits to civilians. The land to the west of the 5 freeway is narrow. They should be able to put up a good fight and stop the fire from getting into San Onofre from the South. There are a couple of small Barrack cities up in the north that they will also probably be trying to save. There are lighting backfires as a last resort.

I’m trying to maneuver my way through the California State website and find more info on the Pendleton fires. Sounds hopeful with the ocean helping out and all. It should make for a nice barrier.

The prevailing winds are changing. The Santa Ana winds are breaking down. So we wont be seeing a fast rush to the west anymore. This fire can move east up into the mountains, north up into South Orange County or back south into the main base installations. Some time later today an on shore wind will want to move the fire east or north east. That onshore wind will be humid so the fire wont be moving super fast. The danger is right now since we are in between the offshore and onshore. This allows the fire to shoot up or down along the coast. Which is what is appears to be doing.

With the partial moon we have tonight you might have been able to run them during the night. Perhaps firing off some arclights way out over the Pacific would have illuminated the area. Just got to watch out for those darn San Onofre power lines. There are miles of them.

I was just outside checking out that moon. It’s close to full. I’m no pilot, but don’t they fly missions at night during times of war?
