Ethnic groups from Nepal’s southern Terai region have claimed responsibility for bombs that killed two people and injured 30 in the capital Kathmandu.
The three near-simultaneous blast occured in a minibus, at a bus stand and outside Nepal’s Army headquarters.
The government, former Maoists and the United Nations condemned the bombings.
Officials say two little-known ethnic groups from the Terai region — the Terai Army and the Nepal People’s Army claim responsibility.
They want a separate state for the 19 districts of the Terai region.

Except for the price ( and I bought mine years ago ) I can't say enough good things about the Woodsman's Pal-- it's much safer to handle than a hatchet, chops better than a machete, and the bush hook at the end slices all kinds of small limbs and vines.
I had misplaced mine for years- running the wrecker service and welding company, I figured I had lost it on a job somewhere.
Searched high and low- no Pal... checked new prices- ow!
Finally, in a box under another box, tucked away in a corner of the back porch- my old Woodsman's Pal.
I cleaned the rust off of it, resharpened the edges, and it's good as new again.
Smiling at you...that’s where I find my stuff for my autumn painting and staining chores...tucked away under this, behind that and around there.

Iraqi, U.S. Forces Detain Militant Extremist Leader

WASHINGTON, Sept. 3, 2007 – Iraqi security forces detained a militant extremist leader and one of his subordinate leaders during an early morning raid yesterday in southern Babil Province, military officials reported.
The suspected terrorist is directly involved in the majority of terrorist acts in Hillah and mortar attacks on coalition bases and the Regional Embassy Office. Iraqi citizens have reported that he leads militias to assassinate locals and has recruited a sniper with training in Iran to target Iraqi police and Iraqi army soldiers.
In other operations over the past several days:
— Scouts from the 6th Iraqi Army conducted an operation in Baghdad detaining a suspected extremist cell leader and one cell member yesterday. The suspected cell leader heads an explosively-formed projectile cell and is believed to be responsible for an Aug. 14 attack against coalition forces and two direct fire attacks against a coalition base in the Baghdad area July 31 and Aug. 18.
— Iraqi security forces, with U.S. Special Forces as advisors, killed an al Qaeda insurgent and detained 17 suspected insurgents during a four-day patrol in support of Operation Phantom Strike Aug. 29 to Sept. 1. Iraqi forces from three separate units coordinated a series of intelligence driven raids in the vicinity of Al Rieq, Al Wara and Sinjar, located in the Al Jazirah Desert north of the Euphrates River near Rawah. Six suspects were detained in Al Rieq and 11 suspects were taken into custody in Al Wara.
— Iraqi special operations forces detained a suspected extremist militant leader and one subordinate during a raid Sept. 1 in Nasiriyah. The detained insurgents are members of a militant suspected for conducting attacks against U.S. bases in Iraq as well as ambushing and killing several Iraqi soldiers in the area. In addition to seizing three AK-47 assault rifles and a pistol, five other suspected insurgents were detained.
— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers from the 4th “Dragon” Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, found two weapons caches and arrested a man suspected of housing another cache during clearing operations in the Rashid District of the Iraqi capital, Sept. 1.
— Troops attached to the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team found four 60 mm mortar rounds during a patrol in Doura Sept. 1. Explosive ordnance disposal personnel destroyed the munitions.
— Also in Doura, sworn statements led the “Warriors” of 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment to detain a man who allegedly stockpiled illegal weapons Sept. 1. Explosive ordnance disposal units were dispatched to an Iraqi police station in the Hayy Aamel neighborhood to dispose of unexploded ordnance consisting of seven 80 mm mortar rounds and three 60 mm mortar rounds wired as improvised-explosive devices; six 107 mm rockets and five rocket-propelled grenades.

Afghan, Coalition Forces Kill 25 Insurgents, Discover Weapons Cache

WASHINGTON, Sept. 3, 2007 – Afghan national security forces, advised by coalition soldiers, conducted a cordon and search operation of an insurgent headquarters southwest of Kandahar City yesterday leading to the deaths of 25 insurgents and the discovery of a weapons cache.
Intelligence reports led the Afghan and coalition forces to two compounds in Ashoqeh Village, southwest of Kandahar City. Intelligence suggested that the compounds, comprised of seven buildings, contained multiple insurgent leaders responsible for the deaths of Afghan and coalition forces during bombings and ambushes along Highway 1, west of Sanjaray.
One of the insurgents is suspected of being a Taliban leader who has facilitated attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the Kandahar City area.
The operation started with Afghan forces attempting to search the first of the two compounds. Insurgents attacked the force with small-arms and machine gun fire as they prepared to enter the first compound. Forces returned fire and called for coalition close air support. An initial assessment revealed that 11 insurgents were killed in this compound from both small-arms fire and the close air support.
Also found in the compound was bomb making material, including TNT, several heavy machine guns, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and rounds, small arms ammunition and three video cameras. In addition, during the initial engagement a suicide bomber blew himself up, causing no coalition injuries.
The ground force then moved toward the second compound when they were engaged again by machine gun fire. Because of the volume of fire from this compound, the ground forces directed close air support to engage the compound. Massive secondary explosions were observed after the aircraft engaged the compound.
Fourteen enemy fighters were estimated killed in the second compound. A total of 25 insurgents were estimated killed during the course of the evening’s operations.
No non-combatants were reported killed or wounded during this engagement.
The ground forces also reported no non-combatant activity prior to beginning their operation.
“The death of these enemies of peace and stability, and the destruction of their infrastructure, will disrupt the current assassination and terror campaign the insurgents are conducting against the (Islamic Republic of Afghanistan) government and coalition forces in Kandahar City,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokesman. “The ground forces in this operation were extremely careful and precise in their application of force. The enemy was staging to kill and displace Afghan civilians, but, again, they were unsuccessful.”
In other operations yesterday:
— Afghan National Police, advised by coalition forces, detained a Taliban leader and 10 other insurgents in the Sabari District, Khowst Province during an early-morning operation. The combined force air assaulted into three separate locations from a nearby coalition forces base and conducted cordon and search operations. The primary target was detained at his home while police arrested 10 other suspected insurgents before heading back to their base.
“The Afghan National Police have brought justice to another criminal enemy of the Afghan people,” said Belcher. “The ANP’s peaceful capture of Mohammed Ali Jan is another example of the level of competence of the ANP. It should also be noted that the Afghan National Police and their coalition forces partners remain committed to finding and eliminating al Qaeda and Taliban extremist fighters who would deny peace and stability to all Afghans.”
— Afghan National Police officers, advised by coalition forces, defeated an attempted ambush by insurgents while conducting a combat patrol in Province. The Afghan-led force was patrolling north of Kandahar when they were attacked by a small Taliban force. The police repelled the ambush with small arms and crew-served weapons and pursued the enemy fighters attempting to flee in two vehicles. As the police continued their patrol through the village, they came under additional fire from insurgents located within the village. An estimated half-dozen insurgents were engaged and eliminated with small arms and crew-served weapons.
— Afghan and coalition forces killed one suspected militant during an operation targeting militants associated with the al Qaeda network in Paktika Province. The militant was shot and killed after attempting to engage the force. Some damage was done to buildings during the course of operations.
— Afghan national security forces detained a Taliban leader in the Dowlat Sha District, Nangahar Province. The Taliban sub-commander was detained by the Afghan forces and provided no resistance during his arrest. Intelligence from various sources suggests the captured leader was responsible for facilitating attacks on ANSF and coalition troops in the area.
“The ANSF have time and again proven their ability to act on intelligence to effectively remove Taliban fighters and leadership,” said Belcher. “The capture of Zar Jan will inevitably lead to information that the ANSF will use to further the eliminate Taliban leadership in the Nangahar Province.”

Chinese military hacked into Pentagon

The Chinese military hacked into a Pentagon computer network in June in the most successful cyber attack on the US defence department, say American officials.
The Pentagon acknowledged shutting down part of a computer system serving the office of Robert Gates, defence secretary, but declined to say who it believed was behind the attack.
Current and former officials have told the Financial Times an internal investigation has revealed that the incursion came from the People’s Liberation Army.
One senior US official said the Pentagon had pinpointed the exact origins of the attack. Another person familiar with the event said there was a “very high level of confidence...trending towards total certainty” that the PLA was responsible. The defence ministry in Beijing declined to comment on Monday.

Servicemen rushed to rescue little children from a day care center in Sderot, Israel, when Palestinian militants fired a rocket into the center.
None of the 15 babies at the center was hurt. But frantic parents across the city - already furious over the government's failure to protect them and their children from the near-daily rocket fire - pulled their children out of schools on the second day of the academic year.
Army officials said the militants had fired six rockets at the southern Israeli city situated only a few kilometers (miles) from the Gaza Strip. At least one of the six rockets had reached the target. The Islamic Jihad militant group claimed responsibiity for firing three.

New Delhi - The militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed, which is active in Jammu and Kashmir, and its two splinter groups have joined hands with international terror group al Qaeda to fight Pakistani forces.
The Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Jangvi and Sipah-e-Sahaba joined al Qaeda to increase terrorist activities targeting the Pakistan Army, government personalities and installations, a media report from Pakistan said.
Militants of these groups are being led by Abu Ali Tunisi, a terrorist from Tunisia. Tunisi, based in North Waziristan, is coordinating with the groups and individuals who believe in bringing about a revolution through terrorism, Pakistani daily The News reported.

Ramadan Starts on Sept. 13, Says Astronomy Body

DUBAI — The Emirates Astronomical Society (EAS) has announced that the holy month of Ramadan will start on Thursday (Sept. 13) according to astronomical calculations.
“Astronomical calculations have showed that Sept. 13 will be the first day of the fasting month in most Muslim countries, including Oman, Morocco, Iran and others, which started the month of Shaaban on Aug. 14,” said Mohammed Ouda, chairman of the Islamic Crescents’ Observation Project (ICOP) and a member of the EAS.
For these countries, he explained, Tuesday, Sept. 11, will correspond to the 29th of Shaaban and on this specific day it will be impossible to sight the crescent, as the moon will set before the sun. Consequently, he added, these countries should complete 30 days in the month of Shaaban and start the fasting month on Thursday, Sept. 13.

New citizenship lessons have been proposed to prevent Muslim pupils from becoming suicide bombers and increase their participation in British society.
Young Muslims will be asked to consider the impact of the 7/7 bombings on their victims; encouraged to report terrorist plots to the police; and women advised not to wear the full Islamic veil to “avoid confrontation”. Drawing on the Koran to counter extremist ideology, pupils will be taught to channel any anger against British foreign policy into legitimate forms of protest, such as the ballot box.
The curriculum is already being used in up to 200 Islamic schools, or madrasahs, as well as some mainstream state schools, mainly in West Yorkshire. Now, the government, which has part funded the initiative, wants to see it rolled out nationally in madrasahs and schools, though there are no plans to make it compulsory. Officials estimate that about 100,000 Muslim children attend madrasahs or religious classes at mosques each day, normally after school or at the weekend. But the instruction they receive has traditionally focused on reciting the Koran and learning Arabic.
The new citizenship classes have been introduced by the Bradford Council of Mosques, which has trained about 50 imams in the “Nasiha” (good advice) curriculum. Sajid Hussain, an Oxford-educated secondary school teacher, has devised more than 30 lesson plans that can be downloaded from the internet. They are aimed at pupils aged 10-17.
Hussain claimed radical preachers had tried to drive “a wedge between a Muslim person’s faith and society”. The lessons, he believes, will enable youngsters to challenge extremist views by using evidence in the Koran. “It’s okay saying Islam teaches against suicide bombings, but we need to know why,” he said. “It’s very important that young Muslims understand that their faith is not divisive.”
A lesson on the “sacredness of life and property” aims to teach pupils “that it is unlawful to make oneself into a suicide bomb and kill others in a country where Muslims have given a religious promise to respect its laws”. Sources at the Department of Communities and Local Government, which has been monitoring the programme, confirmed that it wanted it to be used nationally.
