The Birth of al Qaedastan

In the year 2016, the world may find itself gloomily marking September 6 as the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Islamic Emirate of Waziristan. The Emirate received de facto recognition when the Taliban used the name on the ceasefire agreement they signed with Pakistan on that day in 2006. If things go terribly wrong in the coming decade, they could come to rule a mountainous fragment of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Emirate would be a nightmare state: Osama bin Laden as sultan, Ayman al Zawahiri as vizier, and Mullah Omar the spiritual leader. An economy built on smuggling and heroin. Primary export: terrorism. Welcome to ‘Al Qaedastan’.

Analysts say the rise of a terrorist state straddling the rugged area between Pakistan and Afghanistan is now viable. The reason is a number of troubling trends. One, the revival of a Taliban firmly in the control of Al Qaeda. Two, the seeming inability of either Kabul or Islamabad to defeat the new threat militarily. Three, and the most striking, the Taliban’s systematic supplanting of the traditional tribal leadership in the area. Full story...

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The suspect, who is between 5’6” and 5’10” tall and 150-200 pounds and usually wears no shoes, has mostly targeted women between 24 and 37 at home late at night or early in the morning, according to police. He always enters the same way.”

Protecting Your Business Against Extortion Bomb Threats

Several financial and commercial institutions throughout the United States have received extortion telephone calls threatening to blow up their organization unless a large sum of money was wired to an overseas bank account. Criminal intelligence analysts are sifting through local police reports to identify similarities in the threats. In addition, the FBI has launched a public campaign on how to respond to a potential bomb threat.

“The FBI, in close cooperation with our other federal, state, and local law enforcement partners, is working to identify those responsible and bring them to justice,” said Assistant Director Kenneth W. Kaiser, FBI Criminal Investigative Division. “These are serious criminal offenses and the FBI needs the public assistance and information related to potential bomb threats.”

We recognize these threats may be alarming to the public and suggest the following steps and questions be asked when responding to a potential phone-in bomb threat:

1. Questions to ask the caller:
When is the bomb going to explode?
Where is the bomb located right now?
What does it look like?
What kind of bomb is it?
What will cause it to explode?
Did you place the bomb?
Why?
What is your address?
What is your name?
What is your phone number?

2. Document the EXACT wording of the threat and caller’s response.

3. Apparent gender, race, and age of the caller.

4. Characteristics of the caller’s voice (calm, angry, excited, accent, etc.)

5. Background sounds (street noises, static on the line, etc.)

6. Threat Language (well spoken, incoherent, taped, irrational)

7. If caller ID is available, write down the telephone number.

8. If businesses are capable of recording telephone calls, maintain them for police.

SNIPPET: “On August 31, 2007, the Islamist website www.ekhlaas.cc, hosted by SiteGenie LLC in Rochester, Minnesota, posted a document calling for “martyrdom [i.e., suicide] operations” in Denmark. The author, who identified himself as a member of Al-Qaeda, urged the Muslims not to forget the incident of the Danish cartoons, and promised the people of Denmark that the “brigades of martyrdom seekers are on their way... and will soon carry out blessed operations” in their country. ARTICLE SNIPPET: “While thousands of children were making their way to school Monday morning, the Color Red alert was heard in Sderot, followed by two loud explosions. Two Qassam rockets landed outside of town, causing no injuries or damage.

Another rocket landed near a kindergarten in town shortly after; several people suffered shock and a house was damaged.

A mother of a child who attends the kindergarten said: “They called my and said that a rocket landed near the facility. I ran there and found all the children terrified and in tears. The kindergarten teachers tried to calm them.”

Another rocket landed later just outside Sderot, causing no injuries or damages.

Earlier, Palestinian gunmen fired three rockets from northern Gaza; the Qassams landed in open fields near Sderot. No one was injured and no damage was caused in this attack as well.

An overall of seven rockets hit the southern town during the morning hours.”

“Babies evacuated as Kassam strikes Sderot day care center courtyard”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “On Monday, Soldiers scrambled to evacuate babies from a day care center in Sderot after a projectile fired by Palestinian terrorists thudded into the courtyard.

None of the 15 babies at the center were wounded. However, frantic parents across the city - already furious over the government’s failure to protect them and their children from the near-daily rocket fire - pulled their children out of schools on the second day of the academic year.

In total, seven Kassam rockets landed in and around the western Negev town Monday morning as Sderot children started their second day of the new school year. The Islamic Jihad said they had fired nine Kuds-3 rockets, saying on their internet site that the attack was “a present for the start of the new school year.”

Twelve people, including some of the babies, suffered shock when one of the rockets landed near the creche and a building was damaged.”

Coalition forces disrupt al-Qaeda network, detain five suspects

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces detained five suspected terrorists during operations Monday to disrupt al-Qaeda in Iraq operations in the Tigris River Valley.

Coalition forces captured two suspected terrorists in Tikrit, including an alleged foreign terrorist facilitator who moved up to replace a suspected former leader captured Aug. 13. Intelligence reports also indicate the suspect is tied to senior leaders of al-Qaeda in Iraq.

South of Baghdad, Coalition forces targeted a senior leader of al-Qaeda in the Arab Jabour region and detained two suspected terrorists allegedly tied to the terrorist network there.

In the northern city of Bayji, Coalition forces raided a suspected terrorist safe house operated by an Iraqi facilitator. The ground forces detained one individual with alleged ties to the facilitation network.

“We’re continuing to relentlessly pursue the al-Qaeda in Iraq terrorists who facilitate and conduct attacks against the Iraqi people and the security forces that protect them,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesman.
