Hurricane Dean Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | August 19, 2007 | NOAA/NWS

Posted on 08/19/2007 3:52:51 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Dean is moving west-northwest through the Caribbean Sea. The current NHC forecast track indicates Dean's powerful center core will pass just south of the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, and should skirt Jamaica's southern shoreline. The storm maintained strong Category 4 wind status through the night during an eyewall replacement cycle. However, the minimum pressure supports Category 5, and additional strengthening of winds is likely.

Tourists in Jamaica crowded airports Saturday to leave the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller addressed the Jamaican people, asking that everyone put aside their political differences and work together in advance of the imminent storm preceding Jamaica's general election scheduled for August 27. PM Miller announced that the Jamaican power grid and water would likely be shut down early Sunday morning in advance of the storm, and strongly urged citizens to seek shelter.

The United States and Barbados have pledged hurricane relief supplies and support to Jamaica as needed. No word yet from the United Nations...

thank you for the new thread and the ping.

We’ll be traveling again today, getting a bit closer but still stay completely out of any action.

Will check in later on this thread. Prayers lifted for all who are in this storms path.

I appreciate your starting another thread on this topic. I would like to make an observation though.

People who do not have systems capable of handling large graphics should use the tools functions to turn off loading graphics.

The rest of us should not have to forgo the latest technology just because they can’t use it.

This has been a little irritating over the years. Please don’t take it personally.

Take care...

All forecast aside, this storm seems like it may have taken a little jog north, about 4 hours ago it looked like it was headed just south of Jamaica. A stright line on it’s present course looks more like a possible direct hit. Remember the forecast model are just computer guesses, mother nature seems like it does what it wants to at times.2 years ago we just knew Houston was gonna get a direct hit from Rita but, it took an unexpected right hook into the TX/LA border.

It looks like it is going to hit Mexico, or even Aztlán.

Dean must be a racist.

Please God, help those in Dean's path...

As I was leaving the Lowes I called my dad, let him know. He like my brother, and myself is ready. He told me that my brother was already getting a few supplies he needed. We are already getting on the same page if we need to move. My family has lived on teh gul coast since 1946, and My dad said it clear then any weather forcaster could, “It looks like it might hit Mexico, but you never know what it will do, it could hit Florida just for the heck of it.” One get in the gulf you need to be ready.

The visual loop gives me the feel that Jamaica is about to see a direct hit. With a storm this strong, even a near miss is going to be devastating

Your graph confirms mine, it certainly looks like it took a little turn north.

Things are not looking good for Jamaica, Dean does seem to be heading right for them.
