:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Disaster Looms in Pakistan

Decorum was abandoned as accusations ricocheted between the wood-panelled walls of Pakistan's national assembly on Monday night. "Murderers! Murderers of innocent people!" screamed an MP from a religious party, his yellow turban shaking as he wagged a finger towards the government benches.

Five female parliamentarians, their faces concealed behind black and white burkas, slapped the benches with open palms. Another mullah stood up and started shouting. The speaker strained to maintain order.

Others were less captivated by the debate on last month's siege of the Red Mosque, in which more than 100 people died. One man snoozed at his desk. Across the vast hall others started whispered conversations. And high above them Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a dapper man with a pinched, clean-shaven face, looked on impassively from his giant portrait on the wall. Full story...

“Italy Probe Unearths Huge Iraq Arms Deal”
Aug 12, 1:38 PM (ET)
By CHARLES J. HANLEY and ARIEL DAVID

PERUGIA, Italy (AP) - In a hidden corner of Rome’s busy Fiumicino Airport, police dug quietly through a traveler’s checked baggage, looking for smuggled drugs. What they found instead was a catalog of weapons, a clue to something bigger.

Their discovery led anti-Mafia investigators down a monthslong trail of telephone and e-mail intercepts, into the midst of a huge black-market transaction, as Iraqi and Italian partners haggled over shipping more than 100,000 Russian-made automatic weapons into the bloodbath of Iraq.
As the secretive, $40 million deal neared completion, Italian authorities moved in, making arrests and breaking it up. But key questions remain unanswered.

For one thing, The Associated Press has learned that Iraqi government officials were involved in the deal, apparently without the knowledge of the U.S. Baghdad command - a departure from the usual pattern of U.S.-overseen arms purchases.

Why these officials resorted to “black” channels and where the weapons were headed is unclear.

The purchase would merely have been the most spectacular example of how Iraq has become a magnet for arms traffickers and a place of vanishing weapons stockpiles and uncontrolled gun markets since the 2003 U.S. invasion and the onset of civil war.

Some guns the U.S. bought for Iraq’s police and army are unaccounted for, possibly fallen into the hands of insurgents or sectarian militias. Meanwhile, the planned replacement of the army’s AK-47s with U.S.-made M-16s may throw more assault rifles onto the black market. And the weapons free-for-all apparently is spilling over borders: Turkey and Iran complain U.S.-supplied guns are flowing from Iraq to anti-government militants on their soil.
Iraqi middlemen in the Italian deal, in intercepted e-mails, claimed the arrangement had official American approval. A U.S. spokesman in Baghdad denied that.

“Iraqi officials did not make MNSTC-I aware that they were making purchases,” Lt. Col. Daniel Williams of the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq (MNSTC-I), which oversees arming and training of the Iraqi police and army, told the AP.

Operation Parabellum, the investigation led by Dario Razzi, anti-Mafia prosecutor in this central Italian city, began in 2005 as a routine investigation into drug trafficking by organized-crime figures, branched out into an inquiry into arms dealing with Libya, and then widened to Iraq.”

“Well, someone certainly has been struck blind, deaf and dumb...
...the question is: who is more adversely effected, us or them?”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “For our part we have analyzed many thousands of such IP addresses, and we are here to tell you that jihadis don’t practice what they preach. Not consistently. And trying to be careful some of the time is simply not good enough. There are jails full of jihadis who have learned that lesson the hard way.

Shutting down websites is a tactic, and done wisely in support of a particular objective it can be a good thing. Done blindly as an end in itself it only serves to breed a resistant pest much like the over-application of insecticide will do.

The enemy is people, not websites.

Websites are a symptom, a sign along the trail, spore you can follow until you bag the game.”

Hmm, I’ve been hearing more and more about Perugia, especially since my wife visited a town nearby for some art classes. She met a former teacher there who said she quit her job teaching religion at the university because the muslim students were disruptive and at times violent in whenever she was teaching about anything but islam.

She quit after she was in an auto accident and had to spend several months in physical therapy. I never found out the details of the accident, but I’m starting to wonder if it was really an accident.

Well, I understand driving in Italy can be quite an experience, so it may very well have been an accident,

Your post is interesting, though and I do appreciate this feedback.

Robbery Suspect Shot & Killed By Store Owner (CA)
Fox40 KTXL ^ | August 11, 2007 | Staff

Posted on 08/12/2007 2:59:38 PM PDT by DaveLoneRanger

A deadly shooting is being called self-defense, after a convenience store clerk in Yuba City took matters into her own hands during a robbery.

“We heard a couple gunshots and saw a bunch of people running,” said Matt Lewis, who witnessed the incident. In normally quiet Yuba City, hearing gunshots will send people running, and it did on Friday night at the Percy Avenue Market.

About 8:15 p.m., a white man in his thirties wearing a dark jacket walked into the empty store. He demanded money at gunpoint. The female clerk, also one of the market’s owners, gave him all she had, which was less than one hundred dollars. “He demanded more cash, and as he demanded more that’s when the clerk pulled out a gun and shot the suspect,” said Sergeant Kim Slade of the Yuba Police Department.

Shot in the chest, the man stumbled into the parking lot and died. Police found his gun and the money he had stolen in his coat.

“It was horrible, especially in your neighborhood. I mean, that’s my house right there and this is my store,” said Lewis.

Back at work on Saturday, but much too shaken to speak on camera, the woman and her husband say this is the worst experience in their 24 years of operation. It’s not the first time the store has been robbed. Back in 1992, a man came in, demanded money and got into a scuffle with the owner. He ended up getting shot in the stomach and the suspect got away. The couple says they’ve learned a lot about self-defense since then.

The suspect is from the area but his identity has not been released. Police are investigating, but say the shooting looks to be self-defense. “We try and advise people not to take the law into their own hands. We look at each case differently, but it’s kind of a spur of the moment thing, how one feels,” said Slade.

Coalition Forces Kill An Estimated Three-to-Five Terrorists, Detain 13

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces captured 13 suspected terrorists with ties to extremist militia Special Groups in a pre-dawn raid Sunday in Sadr City.

Coalition Forces conducted the raid to capture or kill highly-sought weapons facilitators with connections to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps – Quds Force in Iran. Those detained are suspected of facilitating the transport of weapons and personnel from Iran into Iraq. They are also believed to have facilitated the transport of deadly Explosively Formed Projectiles (EFPs) from Iran into Iraq to be used against Coalition Forces.

As Coalition Forces were departing the area, they encountered and destroyed a light utility truck that posed a threat to the force. Coalition Forces attempted to signal the vehicle, however when the vehicle failed to respond, Coalition Forces fired on the vehicle with small arms fire.

During the raid, Coalition Forces confiscated a computer hard-drive, documents and photographs.

A Coalition air strike also engaged the same light utility truck, destroying the truck and killing an estimated three to five people in the truck believed to be terrorists.

“Coalition troops continue in their pursuit of unhelpful foreign influences here in Iraq,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I Spokesperson. “Those foreign influences are hindering the prospects of peace and stability in Iraq, and we will continue to dismantle their networks.”
