:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Disaster Looms in Pakistan

Decorum was abandoned as accusations ricocheted between the wood-panelled walls of Pakistan's national assembly on Monday night. "Murderers! Murderers of innocent people!" screamed an MP from a religious party, his yellow turban shaking as he wagged a finger towards the government benches.

Five female parliamentarians, their faces concealed behind black and white burkas, slapped the benches with open palms. Another mullah stood up and started shouting. The speaker strained to maintain order.

Others were less captivated by the debate on last month's siege of the Red Mosque, in which more than 100 people died. One man snoozed at his desk. Across the vast hall others started whispered conversations. And high above them Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a dapper man with a pinched, clean-shaven face, looked on impassively from his giant portrait on the wall. Full story...

No Bomb Found After TriMet Bus Threat

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland police officers investigated a bomb threat in southeast Portland on Wednesday.

Police said a man got off a bus and said there was a bomb on it at Southeast 82nd Avenue and Flavel Street.

The bus driver wasn’t sure if the man left anything on the bus and there was no evidence of a suspicious object, according to police.

After searching the bus, nothing was found, and the man was taken into custody.

Police: Bomb Threat Sent Electronically (TX)

More than one threat reportedly sent

MCALLEN - Air travel returned to normal at the McAllen Miller International Airport, after a morning bomb scare.

“A bunch of things running through my head, especially since 9/11, so I tried not to think about it,” says J.D. Corey, one of the passengers evacuated from the airport. “It’s a little scary... evacuation... not knowing.”

Passengers waited in the parking lot, while a bomb squad searched the airport. A sniffer dog was also used to look for anything suspicious.

Police tell us the threat was sent electronically. According to officers, there were two or more threats made.

They say they’re taking the threat very seriously.

McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez tells us, “This is an airline facility. We know what’s happened in this country. This is not something we take lightly.”

I wonder what “the man”’s name is other than “the man.”

Three Mexican Nationals Indicted in South Carolina Sex Trafficking Case

WASHINGTON – Three Mexican nationals were indicted yesterday for sex trafficking and related crimes, Assistant Attorney General Wan J. Kim of the Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorney Reginald I. Lloyd of the District of South Carolina announced.

According to the 20-count indictment, Jesus Perez-Laguna, Guadalupe Reyes-Rivera a.k.a. “Mama Martina,” and Ciro Bustos-Rosales violated federal law by conspiring between November 2006 and March 2007 to bring Mexican women into South Carolina for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex. The indictment alleges that in at least one instance the victim was 14 years old. The indictment also charges the defendants with various immigration violations including the harboring of illegal aliens.

“Too often, sex traffickers prey on young women who are brought into the United States illegally, thousands of miles from home, and unaware of the U.S. legal system or their rights to be free from this form of involuntary servitude,” said Assistant Attorney General Kim.

“The Justice Department takes these charges very seriously and is committed to prosecuting those who exploit vulnerable young women lured into this country with false promises of a better life,” added U.S. Attorney Lloyd.

If convicted, the defendants each face a maximum sentence of up to life in prison, and a combined fine of over $1 million.

An indictment is an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The Attorney General has made the prosecution of human trafficking crimes a top priority. In the last six fiscal years, the Civil Rights Division, in conjunction with U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, has increased by six-fold the number of human trafficking cases filed in court.

The case was investigated by special agents of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and investigators with the Columbia (S.C.) Police Department. The case is being jointly prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mark C. Moore and Tara L. McGregor, and Civil Rights Division Trial Attorney Ryan McKinstry.

“Local Muslims must help cops target terror”
By IMAM SHAMSI ALI
Wednesday, August 22nd 2007, 4:00 AM
Be Our Guest

OPINION COMMENTARY SNIPPET: “An NYPD report issued last week shined a spotlight on the growing threat of homegrown radicalism. As a member of the city’s Muslim community, I must say: By describing the problem clearly, the report is an important contribution to our understanding of the terrorist threat.

Indeed, I am honored the report cited an article of mine, published in the Daily News last year, as evidence that the city’s Islamic community sees a real danger in its midst. My commentary singled out a local radical group, the Islamic Thinkers Society, and warned against other poisonous elements.

In the wake of the NYPD report, people throughout the city’s Muslim community must now ensure an ongoing, aggressive effort to root out radicals in the five boroughs.

New Yorkers should understand: Some of this is already underway. Many prominent Muslim leaders are fully aware of a fringe element whose sentiments stem primarily from a misinterpretation of religious teachings as well as from international political tensions.”

“Sister of 9/11 Victim Calls for ‘Terror Free Investing’”
By Fred Lucas
CNSNews.com Staff Writer
August 22, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “(CNSNews.com) - Charles F. “Chic” Burlingame III was the pilot in command of American Airlines flight 77 - one of the planes hijacked by terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001 and crashed into the Pentagon.

Today, his sister, Debra Burlingame, is lending her voice to a national movement that advocates consider the most peaceful means of combating terrorists: calling for states to withdraw their public pension money from companies doing business with Iran.

“One of the things I’ve done for the last six years is read up on who these people are,” she told Cybercast News Service. “I found they are telling us who they are and what they are doing. But a lot of people here and in Western Europe don’t want to listen. For me, the divest terror project is a moral imperative.”

The initiative is growing in popularity, as Missouri, Florida, Illinois, and Louisiana have approved measures to take public pension money out of Iran and Sudan. Meanwhile, California appears poised to do the same with widespread support in the state legislature and support from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Burlingame, a co-founder of 9/11 Families for a Safe and Strong America and a board member of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation, has traveled to Ohio, where the state legislature there is considering a divestment initiative.

She is also traveling around Washington meeting with media and other organizations to raise awareness about the issue.

Burlingame’s hope is for a terror free investment index, just as there is an index for people with environmental concerns and those with tobacco concerns.”

“High Stakes Game in Northern Iraq”
By Kenneth R. Timmerman
FrontPageMagazine.com | 8/23/2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Over the past week, with Iranian shells raining down on Iraqi villages in Kurdish areas along the border zone in the north, Iran’s leaders have engaged the United States in a high stakes game that has gone virtually unreported in the elite media.

Iran has massed thousands of troops along its northwestern border in preparation for a ground assault against Iranian Kurdish fighters who have sought refuge in the rugged Qanbil mountains in northwestern Iraq.

On Tuesday, villagers found leaflets bearing the official Islamic Republic of Iran logo, ordering them to leave the area or face the consequences.

“Our enemies, mainly the Americans, are trying to plant security hurdles in our country (Iran),” the leaflets said. “They achieve this through using agents in the areas of Qandil and Khanira inside the Kurdish region. ‘The authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran will work on cleansing this area.”

Hundreds of Iraqis from the villages of Qandoul and Qal’at Diza, close to the Iranian border in the province of Sulaymanyah, fled as a result of the Iranian shelling, according to wire service accounts.”

“Imams drop lawsuit against ‘Doe’ passengers”
By Audrey Hudson
August 23, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A federal court yesterday accepted a request by a group of Muslim imams to drop all claims in a federal lawsuit against unspecified “John Doe” passengers for reporting the men’s suspicious behavior, which led to their removal from a US Airways flight last year.

The lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court of Minnesota was amended to “hereby dismiss possible defendants ‘John Does’ as set forth in ... the first amended complaint as parties from this action,” said the notice of dismissal. The lawsuit still targets US Airways and Minneapolis airport workers.”
