Civil Disobedience in Rockingham Co. NC (Blogger Plans To Wear Jedi Costume at Board Of Ed. Meeting)
http://www.youtube.com/ ^ | June 15, 2007 | Chris Knight

Posted on 06/15/2007 1:04:49 PM PDT by lowbridge

At the April meeting of the Rockingham County (NC) Board of Education, the board voted 8-4 to mandate Standard Mode Of Dress (school uniforms) at Reidsville Middle and Reidsville High schools starting in the 2007-2008 school year. However, the vote was made on the basis of a survey that was fraudulently conducted. The board voted to impose the uniforms anyway.

There have been 3 meetings of the board in which parents and students have made it clear that they DO NOT WANT the uniforms. The board is refusing to acknowledge this opposition. In protest of this refusal to recognize public sentiment against the uniforms, I intend to wear a full Jedi Knight costume to the meeting of the Rockingham County Board of Education at 6 p.m. on July 9th, 2007.

This video is a segment from Star Talk on WGSR Star 39 in Reidsville, North Carolina early in the evening of June 14th, 2007, in which host Mark Childrey interviewed me (by phone) about my planned protest, and during which an invitation was extended to other opponents of S.M.O.D. to likewise come in outrageous attire to protest both the uniforms and the board's indifference toward its constituents.

I personally think that uniforms make a lot of sense at the middle school level for government schools. There’s always home schooling or private schools if you want to dress geto.

Good. Uniforms should be mandatory at all public schools.

Don’t like it? Take your kid to a private school or home school them.

Private schools, geto?

My children have uniforms in private school.

Would you favor similar treatment for someone similarly protesting President Bush over the shamnesty? Or does freedom of speech apply only to issues that you agree with?

I've no idea if you did this on purpose or not. Either way, isn't it always the case that we manage to undercut our own arguments by doing something completely silly and avoidable? I mean, "geto"? Seriously? Even kids in the ghetto know better.

Oh well. As I said, when we post to correct another's typo, we'll make one ourselves. I'm sure that applies to posts about education as well.

School boards shouldn't be ignoring the demands of parents (within reason).

All fine and dandy, but intentional misspellings by rap "artists" or marketing departments don't change the dictionary. The opposite of heavy is not "lite", the opposite of day is not "nite", and an inner city area heavily populated by that city's poor is not a "geto".

As I said above, if it's done for humorous effect, great. If it's a typo, well hey, we all make those. If it's done unintentionally, it rather undercuts one's ability to make arguments pertaining to education.

And you’re how old, again? You certainly haven’t been to school in the last 15 years.

Uniforms eliminate people wearing “gang colors”. And gangs ARE a problem in schools these days.

You don't think stripping off a business suit, to reveal an Emperor Palpatine outfit (with a NO AMNESTY!) sign in front of George Bush would be a patriotic act??!! :)

OK, but we sci-fi fans take our space operas seriously. I'm still trying to get my lady to watch at least the very first Star Wars, and that Star Trek where they save the whales. It's tough to make references to either genre, and have them go right over her head...

Regular school? Over 20 years. Attended a technical school back in 2001. Besides which I aint the one going to this meeting in a Jedi costume. I dont even live in North Carolina.

True, but apparently not in certain schools in Rockingham County, NC. When the gangs take over THOSE schools, then the parents will turn around.

Go into the kitchen and scream at her "KHAAAAAANNNN!!!!! KHAAAAANNNN!!!! KHAAAAANNNN!!!!!", over and over again untill she gives in.

Works for me.
