At Riverwalk Records, the all-vinyl record store just down the street from the state Capitol, the black "US Out of Vt.!" T-shirts are among the hottest sellers.
But to some people in Vermont, the idea is bigger than a $20 novelty. They want Vermont to secede from the United States -- peacefully, of course.
Disillusioned by what they call an empire about to fall, a small cadre of writers and academics is plotting political strategy and planting the seeds of separatism.
They've published a "Green Mountain Manifesto" subtitled "Why and How Tiny Vermont Might Help Save America From Itself by Seceding from the Union." They hope to put the question before citizens at Town Meeting Day next March, eventually persuading the state Legislature to declare independence, returning Vermont to the status it held from 1777 to 1791.

“peacefully, of course...”
Ah... The mark of a liberal. They feel strongly about this issue. But not strongly enough to fight about it.
I’ll let them secede, but only if San Francisco goes with them.
Go for it, Vermont.
Howard Dean could finally be President of something.
I remember that part of Vermont wants to seceed to New Hampshire because Vermont sucks so bad.
Funny how they think the union would be better if they left it.
“They want Vermont to secede from the United States — peacefully, of course.”
LOL! As did the South. Good luck with that.
Fantastic! How can we help?
I will help them pack.
Vermont, one of the whitest - and most liberal - states in the union, wants to succeed? I wonder if this has anything to do with all those non-white illegal aliens pouring into our country - the ones that so many of them and their ilk wanted. Hypocrisy? Apparently not when you and fellow Babelists demand ultra tolerance, and ultra Balkanization, for others while failing to practice the same in your own communities.
Somebody should rightfully hit these lefties back with their own words: racists and nativists.
Do you thik they’ll call it Vermontistan? I think I know how this is going. To turn out. I think I’ll open a guillotine dealer in New Hampshire.
As a young kid I worked for 8 summers in VT. I loved it. The people were the salt of the earth, however, a certain demographic started moving in in the late 60’s and early 70’s. This just overran the State. So you see what you have now!
Vermont has seen many ex-New Yorkers like Howard Dean, ex-Massachusettsans, and various libertarian / gay / hippie types moving there in recent years. Wonder if all these liberal leaning / anarchist type people can make this gain traction. In a small state, pressure groups such as this may make an impact towards a secession effort.
Guess this means they don’t need the dairy compact anymore?
Oh goody! I’ll help build the fence!
That throws two Senators up for the highest bid. Cuba, anyone?
Of course, I’d be content to see the Senate at 98. Or even zero.
Well, Lincoln didn’t wan’t them to leave. But in Vermont’s case I’ll be glad to oblige........
Note to self. Don’t post from a blackberry.
Is there somewhere that citizens of other states can sign up to encourage Vermont to secede?
They would never REALLY do this, and be independent of the US -
most socialists of the “shepherd” variety know that socialism won’t actually work, they just want to use the idea to attain power over the “sheep” socialists who don’t understand that it can’t work.
Good riddance. Dump them all in a lake of boiling Starbucks double goat milk latte with Sri Lankan sugar and Madagasgar cinnimon...
