Welcome to the FReeper Canteen Hints & Tips that can be make your life easier. Or not! Hopefully, you'll find something here that will make your life easier. Or maybe someone you know could use one of these ideas. If you have a hint or tip of your own, be sure to leave it behind before you leave the Canteen.

Ma can always use helpful ideas on how to keep the Canteen clean with all the youngsters running around.

Let's start with some general household hints.

*** Use of soap wrapper: Don't throw away the wrapper after removing a bar of soap. Place it inside your shoe cabinet or shoe box. It's a cheap way of filling the air with a nice smell.

*** If your polished furniture has small scratches: Try rubbing them with a shelled walnut. You'll see the scratches just disappear!

*** If you have problem with slippery shoelaces which refuse to stay tied: Rub them with a candle and make them less slippery so that knots stay put.

*** To keep lint and dust off glass top tables, wash them in a solution of warm water and fabric softener. Add one tablespoon of liquid fabric softener to one quart of warm water. The fabric softener will clean the glass inexpensively and will help keep lint from gathering on the glass. Also great for computer screens and TV's

*** Don't throw away odd socks or socks with holes in them, use them to make a mop. Tie several socks (10-12 works best) to a mop or broom handle and use just like you would a regular mop. White cotton socks work best for this project and by the time the "sock mop" wears out, you'll probably have plenty more socks to make a new one.

***Get rid of pet hair on upholstery effortlessly by wiping the furniture with a slightly dampened sponge.

Empty them by drinking the contents. Take the metal shells to the recycler for some change. The change can go towards new beer cans which need emptying.

REMOVE WATER OR HEAT MARKS ON WOOD SURFACES (You Know, Those White Marks)

1.) Polish with pure lemon oil. Find a brand called o’cedar, we were told it’s the best brand.
2.) Use Wright’s silver polish, diluted slightly; apply gently, let stand and wipe dry.
3.) Use spirits of camphor.
4.) Mix cigar and or cigarette ashes with a couple of drops of water and make a paste. Rub lightly on the mark to remove.
5.) Try a paste of baking soda and water and use as above in number 4.
6.) Try as above using toothpaste.
7.) Again as above using mayonnaise.

GET RID OF SAND AND GRIT FROM CLAMS

Add corn meal to the soaking water. This will irritate the clams and they will expel the sand and grit while trying to get rid of the corn meal.

ADDITIONAL USES FOR BOUNCE FABRIC SOFTENER
*Repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.
*Eliminates static electricity from your television screen. Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.
*Dissolves soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a used sheet of Bounce.
*Freshens the air in your home. Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang one in the closet.
*Prevents thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce to eliminate the static cling on the thread before sewing.
*Eliminates static cling from hose. Rub a damp, used sheet of Bounce over the hose.
*Prevents musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing.
*Freshens the air in your car. Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat.
*Cleans baked-on food from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in the pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The antistatic agents apparently weaken the bond between the food and the pan while the fabric softening agents soften the baked-on food.
*Eliminates odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.
*Collects cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the loose hairs.
*Eliminates static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resetting.
*Deodorizes shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight so they’ll smell great in the morning.

Just remember; you never buy beer. You only rent it.

To repair a loose screw in a wooden cabinet or door frame.

Remove screw and hinge.

Push wooden toothpicks in screw hole and break off flush.

Reassemble hinge and screws.

The screws will now tighten securely just like brand new.

To replace a loose or broken ceramic tile in your bathroom.

Remove loose or broken tile.

Take your tile to a home improvement center or tile shop to get a replacement tile/tiles to match.

Purchase a small box of powdered white tile grout (its cheap) and a bottle of weldwood household glue.

Clean out all loose bits of tile and grout in the area to be repaired.

In a small plastic dish mix some of the powdered grout with the glue until it is a very thick paste.

Coat the area to be repaired with a thick layer of the grout paste and press the new tile firmly in place.

The paste that squishes out around the edges can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

This method eliminates the need for messy tile glue and makes it easy to get a nice white grout repair at the same time in one step.

Although the glue/grout paste can be removed with a damp cloth while wet, once dried it is waterproof and the tile will never loosen again.

You may also use the glue/grout paste method to repair loose or missing grout around tiles without removing the tile if it isn’t loose.
