BLIND FAITH - Americans believe in religion -- but know little about it
washingtonpost ^ | Sunday, March 4, 2007 | Stephen Prothero

The United States is the most religious nation in the developed world, if religiosity is measured by belief in all things supernatural -- from God and the Virgin Birth to the humbler workings of angels and demons. Americans are also the most religiously ignorant people in the Western world. Fewer than half of us can identify Genesis as the first book of the Bible, and only one third know that Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount.

I'll be there are a lot of Catholics who do not know what the "Immaculate Conception" was.

They no longer have to learn the Catechism?

"He (Edwards) said to his interviewer that he does not think America is a Christian nation, and that the use of the word Christian, in that context, troubles him."

Thanks to butt nuggets like Edwards, much of our country is turning away from Christianity.

I have an audio tape by Dr JP Moreland called "The Menace of Mindless Christianity." I run into amazing ignorance amongst students in my teaching ministry - at the Air Force Academy and other locations.

Hmm...Church is usually pretty packed on our Holy Days of Obligation. I'd probably eliminate kids under 16. I wonder how I might be able to check that one out.

I'll have to pick a random sample at the upcoming "Bunny Brunch" and see what people say.

"I'll be there are a lot of Catholics who do not know what the "Immaculate Conception" was."

I ask this question often. I'll say 90% of the people I've asked got it wrong. I'm not criticizing mind you. Just stating results.

Now I ask you, fellow Freepers, is Mr. Edwards a huge schmuck, or what?

Perhaps he is also a faggot.

You might be surprised. I hope you get some good answers!

You should not eliminate all kids under 16 - they should know the answer. After all, most of them were confirmed by the time they were 12 years old or so.

Most people play games, and pretend that "being a good person" is what it takes to get to heaven.

Our diocese doesn't confirm until about 10th grade if I remember correctly.

I am eager to find out. But would you really think being confused about a question like this is enough to call someone religously ignorant? Isn't it more of a "gotcha" question? I mean, ask a Catholic about Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Christmas day, who is the Pope, What is the most Holy day of the year and you'll get correct answers most often. Ask what was different about Mary's birth and you'll get your definition of the Immaculate Conception in a different way, don't you think?

Another good one--ask people to name the original 12 apostles, note how many start out Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. :-)

It's a book review, not a commentary by The Washington Post.

"The book's main concern, though, is ignorance about the role of religion in American history."

Which is IMO a good point. The fear of mentioning religion in the public schools has resulted in textbooks that intentionally omit much regarding the faith of our nation's founders and its influence on our nations laws and basic institutions. The result is we now have a generation (several, even) who view this as a secular nation and believe in the false notion that the "American Way" includes forcibly excluding Judeo-Christian morality from consideration when setting public policy.

Though I will grant, too that the side conversation about people who call themselves Christian but barely even hold to the most basic tenets of the faith is a good one. The bible even says that in the end there will be many who call him "Lord" but to whom He will say "I do not even know you". I'd do a search and quote chapter and verse, but the point is valid that many who call themselves Christian are in fact unbelievers.

They no longer have to learn the Catechism?

I'm not convinced many Catholics ever had to. I speak to so many older "Catholics" that talk about how they went to Catholic School when they were younger and yet they are so ignorant about the faith it is truly sad.

This is why the Church teaches during Baptism that the parents are the first teachers of the faith. Here is where the problem lies.

I am afraid I have to agree with the basic premise of this article.

I am amazed (and saddened) at how little professing Christians know about Christianity
