Neanderthals among us?
latimes.com ^

Posted on 02/06/2007 7:07:15 PM PST by Soothesayer

DID ANATOMICALLY modern humans interbreed with Neanderthals, the muscle-bound, big-browed and possibly mute cave dwellers who disappeared from Europe and the Middle East about 30,000 years ago? The answer may be less interesting than the fact that so many Homo sapiens are fixated on the question. The debate about whether there's a Neanderthal skeleton in our collective closet was revived last week when two groups of scientists reported that they had deciphered DNA from the thigh bone of a Neanderthal man who lived in Croatia 38,000 years ago. From their analysis of genetic material in the bone, the scientists estimated that Neanderthals and the modern people who supplanted them had 99.5% of their genes in common. This will come as an unpleasant surprise to anyone who remembers the film "Clan of the Cave Bear," in which a comely Cro-Magnon played by Daryl Hannah was adopted into a clan of brutish Neanderthals. But it will cheer anthropologists who argue that if you gave a Neanderthal a bath, a haircut and an iPod, he would blend in with any contemporary crowd. Since the discovery in the 19th century of Neanderthal remains in Germany's Neander Valley, scientific opinion has seesawed between the idea that Neanderthals were an evolutionary dead end only distantly related to modern humans and the view that at least some Neanderthals felt the urge to merge with smarter, nimbler modern humans who left Africa about 100,000 years ago.

"nimbler modern humans who left Africa about 100,000 years ago."

This is a theory. There is no concrete evidence that states that 100,000 years ago man originated....

The Land masses were different, the sea levels were different, the ice sheets were different. It is even plausible that the Axis of the Earth was different or that the land masses as they are currently situated on the mantle were situated differently, thus allowing North Africa to be water and forested and Antartica to be warm and habitable.

Since we can't explore the landmass of Antartica, it is silly to assume that it was never inhabited nor postulate it was not the the home of mankind.

What kind of lunatic would ever fight a guy that size? I heard he`s undefeated and 90% of the time he wins by K.O., so if someone fights this guy, it is pretty much guaranteed he is going to bash their heads apart. Oh yeah, let me into that ring. I`d rather get into a cage with a mountain lion than that dude.

I actually have a co-worker who strongly resembles a Neanderthal in his physical appearance. His face looks like one and he has a very powerful build. And yes, he's a lib. One of the other lib co-workers (who doesn't resemble a Neanderthal) has an anti-Bush calendar posted in his work area. My lib friend wondered where he could get one. Despite a workroom law against political discussions, I was anxious to tell him yes, just go to www.commiebas.....com. But I demurred. Mister Neanderthal also has a very bad temper. In my opinion, the co-workers I most strongly suspect of going nuts are the libs. They're definitely the loudest and the angriest.

Oh sure, nobody ping the GGG guy...
The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve
Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

Do not think so. Do not see great apes interbreeding with monkeys or chimps. What the books and other documents that I have read say is they cannot believe that there were more than one species of upright walkers that arose in more than one place. I think interbreeding requires the same ancestors and I do not believe that Neanderthals were from the same species that we are from. But then I might be wrong since it is just my opinion. But if I were a part of the immigrants into Europe I would have made sure that no species were left that would have been competitive with my food gathering.

"Heavyweight boxer, Nikolai Valuev, comes to mind."

That's the first I've seen of him. His skull would certainly cause some problems if dug up.
