But one thing is clear: Republicans have tended to do better with nominees like Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, who drew the enthusiastic support of conservatives, than with those who attracted less fervent backing, like Gerald Ford, the elder George Bush and Bob Dole.

I am a hardcore prolifer, Christian Conservative, Christian rightwinger type. I will support whoever the GOP nominates because I believe once that point comes that is the best way to move forward the conservative cause. However, among social conservatives I am not the norm. Many many conservatives stay home when we have a moderate or mixed-view candidate. They aren't protesting, they just don't become activated by these candidates.

Between now and then, there is no one, No one!, who compares to Duncan Hunter, IMHO. I will support him and I hope all Freepers will join me.

Come on Hunter fans. After leading in the poll by tremendous margins "Non-member Votes" have pushed another candidate to within range of Duncan Hunter.

Because he is solid on:
Life
Borders
Immigration
War On Terror
Strong Military
American Economy
Lower Taxes

FREEPERS WANT DUNCAN HUNTER FOR THE 2008 GOP NOMINEE - SO PLEASE VOTE IN THIS POLL.

Sorry this thing is so chopped up. DMNews has to be excerpted and it took a lot of chopping to get this one down to size.

It is a good analysis with reality medicines for all of us. Everyone should follow the link and read the whole thing. (IT'S NOT LONG)

We've got Duncan Hunter.

Where's Pence? We need some alternatives.

I don't know why everybody's so concerned about '08 already. The RNC hasn't even had time to set up the smoke and mirrors yet.

I'm still trying to understand why ANYBODY would think that a man who's spent most of his adult life in a safe congressional seat is the savior of the conservative movement.

Get a clue.

A better choice, and an articulate, well-known former Senator: Fred Thompson
Check his voting record here: http://www.ontheissues.org/Senate/Fred_Thompson.htm

And send a message to the former senator here:

It's disappointing that some would use a conservative web site to spread the fiction that Hillary is actually electable (usually issued with a warning that she can only be defeated by a Republican liberal).

Nonsense.

Conservatives must send out the message that Hillary is unelectable---men won't vote for her, and legions of conservative, pro-life women consider Hillary (and her spouse) anathema.

It stands to reason that a good strong pro-life conservative candidate will kick Hillary's backside from here to eternity, without missing a beat.

Tepid, "moderate" Repubs usually don't sell well. Moderates don't attract cross-over votes from Democrats, as counter-intuitive as that is, bold outspoken candidates do.

Any Repub who wants the job had better be prepared to be outspoken in the face of a frantic media barrage. The only way to get past the kind of insanely hostile coverage we've been seeing in recent years is to be bold. The only way to keep the media from freezing you out, which we've also seen, is to be bold.

The only Repubs who will have a chance, whether they are politically "moderate" or conservative as the day is long, will be the one who can arouse and persuade people, and you can't so that if you're trying to thread the needle, split the difference, and fly low under the radar. I'm not pointing at any particular candidate, its something most Repubs are guilty of most of the time.

Thats why a Reagan gets elected with Dem voters crossing the line to vote for him, and a Dole candidacy never gets off the ground. Thats why, when Bush is outspoken and confrontational, he rocks, and gets things done, and when he is timid his poll numbers tumble and he loses control of the agenda.

Hunter sounds like a good guy. He's going to have to go bold or he'll never be heard over the media wall-of-noise. If he'll do it, though, he'll win. This doesn't just apply to Hunter; pick a name. Bold will win. Timid will get you crushed.

Many want to talk about needing someone "tough" on the WOT, then they follow that up with something STOO-PID, like ... Rudy!

Well, Horse poop on that. HERE'S someone who knows about FIGHTING an "asymmetrical war" Which in his day it was called 'Guerrilla Warfare'...

And waaaaaaaay back when. 'Old' Duncan was double timing it to a 'Jodie' like this.... (I'm gonna take some 'liberties')

I WAS an Airborne Ranger!
Lived a life of blood and danger.
I went off to Viet Nam
I killed old Charlie Kong.

So 'Tough on Terror'? Well ... meet a freaking AIRBORNE RANGER. And IIRC Duncan was also a LRRP (look up what that is). He could eat Terrorists for breakfast lunch and dinner - raw.

[btw, where was Rudy then??? Oh yeah, with his cousin.(snicker)]

that doesn't mean there is no GOP aspirant with a record that social conservatives could readily support. Sen. Sam Brownback... Mike Huckabee... James Gilmore... Duncan Hunter of California and Tom Tancredo of Colorado, are also wooing the right. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Among hese candidates, Duncan Hunter is the only one who IS copnservative on his total record, with military experience. He has not had to woo the Roght, he is OF the right. Duncan has not had to " adjust " his message, or lean further to the right, or construct an "image" which shows he is of the right.

The conservative legislative agenda of congress was traduced by the Gang of 14 in the Senate. Simultaneously the DNC , with the help of the RINO Senators of the Gang of 14, engaged in back room politics to get rid of Tom DeLay ( his trial still has not advanced, and they mean to drag it on until after 2008, so that he has no chance of participating in the 2008 presidential race.)

The RINOS and their supporters in the Republican party conducted a coupe, with the help of their Democrat allies. They actually usurped an elected movement of representatives, to stymie conservative republicans. This is hardly democratic, or even republican. Its tyranny of the first water.

Conservative Republicans feel abandoned by the Republican party. The Republican party cannnot possibly win the Republican presidency without the conservative vote. Unless there is a conservative presidential candidate, there will be a repeat of the 2006 debacle in which Republican conservatives stayed home in droves. The Republican party usurped and abandoned the conservative legislative agenda from the House of Representatives. And the Republicans will not be able to trick or terrify Repuiblican conservatives back into the Republican fold without a conservative candidate.

The only truly conservative candidate that has offered so far IS Duncan Hunter. If he or one very much like him who has an established conservative record , with military experience, does not get the nomination, I like many republicans will eiher stay home, vote for a third party, or revenge vote for Hillary. And I have voted straight Republican for the last 4 elections.

This messsage needs to be absorbed by the RNC. The RNC has allowed conservative principles to be abandoned in the party. In abandoning those principels, you have abandoned a third of Republican voters who are irreplaceable.

In doing this , you will have caused the destruction of the Republican party, which will become a simple repository for liberal thought and political action, while the leftist whackos take over the Democrat party.

Conservatives WILL create their own party. They are on their way to doing so now.

nominees like Ronald Reagan

The notion that "social conservatives" don't do well is put to rest with Ronald Reagan.

Reagan won large because he was socially, fiscally, politically, and patriotically...conservative.

Gary Bauer lost for reasons other than "conservatism." He was a lightweight.

I want to hear from more candidates, and I don't want the media to ANNOINT the next republican candidate.

In every Presidential election, there are plenty of conservative candidates that do run for President every time! There are plenty of conservatives in the Republican, Democratic, and Constitution Parties who do run as well as plenty of conservatives who do run as Independent candidates for President! Most voters don't even know about all of the conservative candidates in total who do end up running for President every time.

The Giulianistas are out in force in this forum.

I guess Hunter poses a serious threat to the gal/guy from New York City.
