Jeb Bush in 2008?
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Front_Page/IA03Aa01.html ^ | Spengler

Two and a half years ago I predicted George W Bush's victory in the 2004 elections as well as the subsequent ruin of his political fortune. "Many will be the night during his second term," I wrote in August 2004, "that Bush will wish he were still in Texas, and still drunk." [1]

Here is a follow-on forecast: brother Jeb, about to step down as governor of the state of Florida, will be elected president of the United States in 2008, thanks in large measure to the rebound ofthe current president's standing. In fact, I have no idea whether this will occur. But I raise the prospect to show why it could occur.

With what all the Floridians are saying about him, it sounds like he's too smart and good to be president.

Sounds way too close to a hereditary presidency.

Go to any immigration thread. They show up, eventually.

They also are on Israel threads with posts like "Since the Jews vote Democratic anyway, we should let the palis have Israel."

Typically Michael Savage (the faux conservative) fans, too.

Jeb: an even worse idea than Newt Gingrich or Tom Tancredo, IMO.

This is not an aristocracy.

He's a freaking clone of Theodore Roosevelt and by the way he behaves I would have to say Bush looks up to Teddy in a big way.

You mean the Teddy Roosevelt who split the Republican Party by running against Republican president Taft on the Progressive ("Bullmoose") Party ticket, thereby giving the election to the Democrat Woodrow Wilson?

Rino John McCain for his time. No thanks. Better we leave Teddy on the ash heap of the 2oth century and start electing candidates who understand the American founding.

From Wikipedia, which in this case, is dead-on balls accurate:

In 1901, he became President after the assassination of President William McKinley. Roosevelt was a Progressive reformer who sought to move the Republican Party into the Progressive camp. He distrusted wealthy businessmen and dissolved 40 monopolistic corporations as a "trust buster."

His "Square Deal" promised a fair shake for the average citizen, including regulation of railroad rates and pure foods and drugs. As an outdoorsman, he promoted the conservation movement, emphasizing efficient use of natural resources. After 1906, he moved left, attacking big business and suggesting the courts were biased against labor unions.

Maybe Bush's hand was already dealt re defacto open borders. Shrinking birth rates sort of forced us to become a UN to the world in order to build an army of believers from faraway lands to help us make the transition from a anglo saxon technology dominated world to one that's got lowered barriers to entry to obtaining technical know how. In other words we need champions for our culture to come from all over and learn how to live under the rules of laws, not men and to understand why our rules of law are superior to all others. It's a big gamble.

Rubbish. When did Bush do ANYTHING at all to pressure his friend Fox into discouraging the Mexican invasion?

A Jeb Bush candidacy would look too much like dynastic ambition rather than sensible governance. There is something acceptable and traditional in two terms and father and son presidencies. Any more than that and it begins to look dynastic and hereditary.

Conservatism has plenty of talent without having to risk the appearance of monarchy.

The wrong Bush is in the White House.

That may be so, but we'll never find out.

I would never call Mexico an ally. Maybe the ruling families are allies of the elites in this country, but certainly not the populace. I'm not certain we have any allies in this hemisphere. In a panic, the Canadians might come to their senses and throw in their lot with us, but I doubt it. I think they will fold like the Europeans and come begging for help because like the Europeans they have nothing to fight with and have been living under our umbrella of protection.

Unlike you, I have no interest in partnering up with the socialists in the soon-to-be one continent crap which is meant to sap whatever strength we have, not add to it. I would rather die fighting all of them, but I have a sneaking suspicion there are not many like me.

It is especially a gamble with "santuary laws" in place. Rule of law? How many santuary laws have been implemented since Bush took office?

Neither the Kennedys nor the Bushs got rich from public service.

As a Floridian for Jeb's entire candidacy, I think he was one of the best governors in this country.

Ditto.

The way Republican presidents get beat up by the press, you've got to wonder what candidate who is otherwise fully-qualified would volunteer to take that punishment.

I see Jeb in there—maybe as VP to Rudy. You take what wins when Hillary looms large.

Rubbish? An non-competitive America is rubbish. We are screwed to the hip with Mexico for cheap labor. Without her we have -0- manufacturing base. Why? Our folks won't work for 8 bucks a day to make stuff. Mexico's our best chance to continue to compete. We are staying ahead today only because of our technology head start. Soon we won't have an advantage with technology and then it'll be mano a mano.

Wonderful speaker--Much better executive than his father or brother. However, between a wife who cheated on her customs statement, drug-addict daughter, and son who gets into fist fights in his ex-girlfriend's front yard---there is too much distraction.

Who else have we got? John McCain (if it comes down between him and Hillary, I'll vote Hillary...I trust Hillary to defend us over McCain. At least Hillary has seemingly SOME sense of self-preservation). Rudy (Social lib). Newt is saying he's not running. Condi says she's not running. Mike Huckabee. Mitt Romney. (don't know enough about either) I DO know Huckabee was a good governor. Just not sure about him as a Pres (good or bad).

So, basically that leaves us with a huge NO in McCain. An act of desperation in Rudy. And several folks I don't know much about. I'm not sure we can rule out Jeb just yet since, frankly, it appears our pickings are pretty slim unless someone shows up on a white horse SOON.
