I learned something new this morning. There are two kinds of hanging.

monk, your picture shows, DEATH BY HANGING, and Keat your picture shows HANGED UNTIL DEAD.

DEATH BY HANGING occures when the KNOT is put to the side of the neck and this snaps your neck or can decapatate the person.

HANGED UNTIL DEAD, the KNOT is put at the back of the neck and you die a slow suffocating death. Takes 3 to 5 minutes.

I pick that Saddam is HANGED UNTIL DEAD.

You will notice, perhaps, that Jesus of Nazareth did NOT protest the death of the two thieves, but forgave the ONE who specifically asked for mercy. He did NOT however, spare the lives of either who admitted they were (justly) condemned to die.

Let's assume that we could prove Christ supported the death penalty. I'm not going to argue that one way or another. I would however ask what would Christ think of the absolute glee, the joking, etc. at the death of even a criminal.

Note, I am not arguing for clemency in this situation. Saddam was found guilty and he does deserve to face the punishment for his crimes. But suggesting betting pools when he hangs, jpegs of Hussein in a hangman game, and the other general jokes about his death are, at least in a civilized society, wrong and more than a little disgusting. I can already see the WOO-HOOs and LOLs posted when the news comes through that Hussein has died.

But then again as the Roman Empire began its slow descent into oblivion, the bloodlust demanded by its general citizenry in the Colosseum increased as well...

It's one thing to feel sorry for a murderous tyrant; it's another thing to revel in his execution. I understand that's a typical reaction and I have nothing to say to any unbelieving FReeper who does it. But it is unacceptable for any FReeper who names the name of Christ. Isn't it funny that Sadd-damn never chose the suicide-bomber-martyrdom route? He had plenty of opportunity, but he preferred to hide in a hole.

He had weapons in his hole, he could have gone down fighting, taking a few infidels with him, like a real martyr. But he didn't, I think Sgt. Major Plumley's comments about George Armstrong Custer, could be applied to Saddam as well, in spades.

IIRC, it was filmed in France using French Actors. Rod Serling became aware of it and thought it would fit into the TZ format. The rights were aquired it was broadcast as the last Zone to be shown. It is also the ONLY Zone that wasn't produced by Cayuga and Rod Serling had no involvement with it except for showing it here in America. It was still one of the better Zones.

NBC News, however, indicated it might go further. Steve Capus, the president of NBC News, said that network may show “a wide shot of Saddam hanging.” He said NBC would make its decision based on questions both of taste and of history.

I'm off work this week (I am ACTUALLY taking a vacation!), so I can't tell you if this is actually what network is saying to us out in affiliate land...

What I can't understand is WHY Iraqi State TV would BROADCAST the fact that they're about to hang him!

I mean, that might cause riots before WE have a chance to get ready for them. Why endanger US troops un-necessarily?

In Michigan Government Schools in the early '70's it was the movie always shown when the teacher was out an they couldn't muster a substitute. Stories about hallucinations were popular in those days.
