:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Fighting Jihad in Cyberspace
-Full Story-

The setting is familiar to anyone who watches the evening news. A large, executive-style desk, a laptop perched on top, a logo in the background and a screen showing shifting images to reinforce the newsreader's message. The only difference is the presenter, who is swathed in an Arab headdress and masked to hide his identity, and the subject of the broadcast, a call for an Islamic state for Iraq and a vow to use Iraq as a launching pad to crush the "Zionists" in Israel.

Welcome to the "Voice of the Caliphate", the latest offering from the Global Islamic Media Front, widely regarded as the mouthpiece of al-Qaeda and the worldwide jihadist movement.

Distributed over the internet, the mock news format is just one of many employed by al-Qaeda's highly sophisticated propaganda arm.

"'Conversations' with the enemy"
By Jeff Jacoby

COLUMN SNIPPET: "Should the United States turn to Iran and Syria for help in reducing the violence bloodying Iraq? James Baker's Iraq Study Group, out this week with its well-leaked recommendations, thinks direct talks with Tehran and Damascus would be a fine idea. I think so too -- right after those governments switch sides in the global jihad.

As things stand now, however, negotiating with Iran and Syria over the future of Iraq is about as promising a strategy for preventing more bloodshed as negotiating with Adolf Hitler over the future of Czechoslovakia was in 1938. There were eminent "realists" then too, many of whom were gung-ho for cutting a deal with the Fuehrer. As Neville Chamberlain set off on the diplomatic mission that would culminate in Munich, William Shirer recorded in *The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich,* Britain's poet laureate, John Masefield, composed a paean in his honor. When the negotiations were done and Czechoslovakia had been dismembered, the prime minister was hailed as a national hero. FDR saluted him in a two-word telegram: "Good man." The Nobel Committee received not one, not two, but 10 nominations proposing Chamberlain for the 1939 peace prize.

Iraqi police and U.S. troops secure the site following an explosion in Baghdad, Iraq, Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006. Two car bombs exploded alongside one another and in the vicinity of a gas station in Baiyaa in western Baghdad, killing at least 15 people and wounding 25, police said. (AP Photo/Khalid Mohammed)
But 1939 would see neither peace nor prize. Chamberlain and his admirers had been certain that Munich would bring "peace in our time." Instead it helped pave the way for war."

"Incoming Congress prepares to launch 'Operation Surrender'"
By Ann Coulter

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The "bipartisan" Iraq panel has recommended that Iran and Syria can help stabilize Iraq. You know, the way Germany and Russia helped stabilize Poland in '39.

Now that Democrats have won the House, they can concentrate on losing the war. Despite all the phony conservative Democrats who got elected as gun-totin' hawks, the Democrats will uniformly vote to dismantle every aspect of the war on terrorism. They've started a runaway train and can't stop it now.

The Democratic base is at a fever pitch with visions of storm troopers listening to their phone calls and ruthlessly torturing innocent accountants at Guantanamo, where the average inmate has his own lawyer, his own prayer rug and is wondering what to do about that extra weight -- known as the "Gitmo 20" -- he's put on since being captured. They are oddly copacetic about actual storm troopers' daily harassment of actual citizens at airport security checkpoints. Liberals have no problem with government oppression as long as it's mandatory and applied equally to all Americans."

Pearl Harbor Attack Presents Parallels, Lessons for Terror War

By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Dec. 6, 2006 – Sixty-five years ago tomorrow, the United States endured an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, that for the next 60 years -- until Sept. 11, 2001 -- stood as the most devastating enemy attack on U.S. soil.
Like the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor has been called a defining moment in U.S. history. It caught the country by surprise, rallied its people against their attackers and thrust the nation into a long, difficult war against tyranny.

On the 65th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attacks, they present more parallels, and possibly lessons, for today’s global war on terror.

Within hours of the surprise attack in the early-morning hours of Dec. 7, 1941, more than 2,400 Americans were dead. Five of the eight battleships at the U.S. Fleet’s Pearl Harbor base were sunk or sinking, and the other battleships, as well as ships and Hawaii-based combat planes, were heavily damaged.

By crippling the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Japan hoped to eliminate it as a threat to the Japanese Empire’s expansion south.

The Sept. 11 attacks, in contrast, were more symbolic than tactical. The World Trade Center in New York -- which al Qaeda had previously attacked in 1993 -- stood as a symbol of the U.S. free-market economy. The Pentagon represented the U.S. military’s command center, but not its operational arm.

The other intended target -- either the White House or the U.S. Capitol, many people speculate, if the passengers hadn’t commandeered their hijacked plane over Shanksville, Pa. -- represented the epicenter of the democratic U.S. government.

When the smoke cleared, the death toll from Sept. 11 topped even the devastation of Dec. 7, 1941, with almost 3,000 people, mostly civilians, dead.

Both the Pearl Harbor and Sept. 11 attacks had another similar consequence: pushing the United States into war.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared Dec. 7, 1941, “a day which will live in infamy” and signed the Declaration of War against Japan the following day.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chief of naval operations, described what the United States was up against when it entered World War II during a late October visit to Oklahoma City. “Things were tough,” Mullen said. “Our fleet had taken a devastating blow. Japanese troops occupied Korea, China and would soon take over the Malaysian peninsula, Singapore and the Philippines.”

Nazi Germany, which already controlled a vast empire, declared war on the United States four days after the Pearl Harbor attack, Mullen noted.

Despite different challenges in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters, Mullen said, they ultimately boiled down to a common denominator. “There were clearly two competing visions of the world: one of freedom, the other of tyranny,” he said. “And tyranny appeared to have the upper hand.”

Mullen urged his Oklahoma City audience to “fast forward to today” and the global war on terror.

“If the attack on the destroyer Cole, the treachery of 9-11, if events across the globe from London to Lebanon, Baghdad to Bali, from Pyongyang to Tehran, have taught us anything,” he said, “it is that the struggle we currently face is also about two competing visions of the future and our vision of hope and prosperity and a secure future for our children (and) all children."

In his National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day 2006 proclamation, Bush noted similar challenges facing the United States today.

“In the 21st century, freedom is again under attack, and young Americans have stepped forward to serve in a global war on terror that will secure our liberty and determine the destiny of millions around the world,” he said. “Like generations before, we will answer history's call with confidence, confront threats to our way of life, and build a more peaceful world for our children and grandchildren.”

Bush recalled the resolve Roosevelt demonstrated as the United States went to war. "We are going to win the war and we are going to win the peace that follows," Bush said, quoting Roosevelt.

Speaking in October at the dedication of the USS George H.W. Bush in Newport News, Va., the president praised the dedication World War II veterans demonstrated to ensure that victory.

He called U.S. troops fighting today’s war on terror “a new generation of Americans every bit as brave and selfless as those who have come before them” and said they, too, will see the fight through to victory.

“Freedom is again under attack, and young Americans are volunteering to answer the call,” he said. “Once again, with perseverance, and courage, and confidence in the power of freedom, a new generation of Americans will leave a more hopeful and peaceful world for generations to come.”

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, 2006
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

Sixty- five years ago, more than 2,400 Americans lost their lives in a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. On National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we think of those who died on December 7, 1941, and honor all those who sacrificed for our liberty during World War II.

On that peaceful Sunday morning, our country suffered a vicious, unprovoked attack that changed the course of history. Though our Pacific Fleet was nearly destroyed, our citizens were inspired by the great acts of heroism from those who survived and from those who did not. In the days that followed, our grief turned to resolution, and America embarked on a mission to defeat two of the most ruthless regimes the world has ever known. We pledge to always remember the character and sacrifice of the brave individuals at Pearl Harbor. Their selfless service helped deliver a great victory for the cause of freedom and, ultimately, transformed adversaries into the closest of friends.

After the devastating attacks on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared, "We are going to win the war and we are going to win the peace that follows." In the 21st century, freedom is again under attack, and young Americans have stepped forward to serve in a global war on terror that will secure our liberty and determine the destiny of millions around the world. Like generations before, we will answer history's call with confidence, confront threats to our way of life, and build a more peaceful world for our children and grandchildren.

The Congress, by Public Law 103-308, as amended, has designated December 7 of each year as "National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim December 7, 2006, as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. I encourage all Americans to observe this solemn occasion with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I urge all Federal agencies, interested organizations, groups, and individuals to fly the flag of the United States at half staff this December 7 in honor of those who died as a result of their service at Pearl Harbor.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this first day of December, in the year of our Lord two thousand six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-first.

GEORGE W. BUSH

"Muslim boys urinated on Bible"
Cameron Stewart
06dec06

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "TWO Muslim students have been expelled from an Islamic school in Melbourne for urinating and spitting on a Bible and setting it on fire.

The explosive incident has forced the East Preston Islamic College to call in a senior imam to tell its 650 Muslim students that the Bible and Christianity must be respected."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The Bible desecration took place last week at a school camp held near Bacchus Marsh, about 50km west of Melbourne, attended by 33 teenage Muslim boys ranging in age from Year7 to Year 10.

A school report of the incident, obtained by The Australian, says it happened late at night and involved three students and another two watching.

"The main perpetrator (a Year 7 student) urinated on the Holy Bible, tore some pages from the Holy Book and burnt them then finally spat on the Holy Book," the report says.

The second boy, from Year 9, "tore pages from the Holy Book and burnt them", while a third student, from Year 7, "tore pages from the Holy Bible and then he rolled it up like a cigarette and pretended to smoke it".

The boys come from a variety of ethnic Muslim backgrounds -- one is believed to be an Albanian/Malaysian, another Lebanese and another Indonesian."

Assyrian Christians ’Most Vulnerable Population’ in Iraq

By Michelle Vu, Christian Post
Special to ASSIST News Service

WASHINGTON, DC (ANS) -- Assyrians were joined by faith-based leaders and religious freedom activists on Monday, December 4, in a White House rally to call U.S. political leaders to “save” Iraq's “most vulnerable population.”

The rally outside the White House
Christians for Assyrians of Iraq (CAI) organized a rally to raise awareness of the plight of Iraq's Assyrian (also known as Chaldeans and Syriacs) Christian population which has been called a humanitarian crisis.

“This should be a priority because Assyrian Christians are the indigenous people of Iraq and many people don't know that,” explained Paul Isaac, one of the rally's organizers. “Because of their small population, weak status, and lack of regional support they have no one to protect them from all the violence.”

Isaac pointed to the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) report statistic that although Assyrians comprise only five percent of Iraq's population, they make up nearly 40 percent of the refugees fleeing Iraq. He said that although all the ethnic and religious groups are suffering in Iraq, “it is clear that the Assyrian Christians are suffering by far the most…and they really have no one to protect them…”

In addition to the troubling Assyrian refugee statistic, there has been a rise in reports of persecution of Assyrian Christians in Iraq. Recently, in October, a 14-year-old boy near Mosul died by a crucifixion-murder. In the same month, Father Paulis Iskander was beheaded in Mosul.

“Christians in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East are an inconvenient minority,” said the Rev. Keith Roderick, Christian Solidarity International's Washington representative. “Even though they are indigenous they are made to feel as they are interlopers.”

Roderick added that 27 churches in Iraq have been attacked or bombed in the past two years and 13 Christian Assyrian women were kidnapped and murdered in August.

CAI's solution is the formation of an autonomous zone in Iraq for Assyrians and other Christians. The zone, called the Nineveh Plains Administrative Unit, is likened to a state where Assyrians and Christians can practice their faith, speak and teach their language, and work without fear of persecution.

U.S. Embassy Dakar issued the following Warden Message on December 6:

The U.S. Embassy in Dakar is issuing this Warden Message to inform U.S. citizens that there continue to be a significant number of armed attacks in the Casamance region. On Monday, December 4, a vehicle driving on the Ziguinchor-Cap Skirring road was attacked around 9:00 p.m. This is the first armed attack on this road in several years. Given the high number of armed attacks in the Ziguinchor region over the past six months, and the lack of clarity whether the attacks are being organized by bandits or rebel factions, the U.S. Embassy recommends against all nonessential travel to the Ziguinchor region. If travel to the region is essential, U.S. citizens are encouraged to limit driving outside of towns to daylight hours only and to remain on well-traveled roads at all times.

Other Information:

Americans living or traveling in Senegal are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department's travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Senegal. OPINION: No religion needs special preference at an airport or on an airplane.

Actually, I remember many years ago when the religious sect of Indian Sikhs sued and demanded the right to carry a ceremonial dagger aboard any aircraft as a necessary part to the lawful practice of their religion because it was symbolic in nature. I don't recall that they were given any relief by US airlines, but I do remember the recently "Late" Jeff Cooper immediately declaring he was forming his own church and naming it Our Lady of Colt & The Resurrected 45 and that all holders of CCW permits were to be considered ordained priests thereof and thus be allowed similar injunctive relief for air travel. I'd have joined that cult on the spot!

I agree, eating at home is best, where you, like my wife, can enforce rigid sanitation habits.

Naaaaaah. It's all overblown hype. I've eaten things things (literally I was unaware of the species of meat I was consuming) that would make a billy goat puke and in conditions that would make a gorilla retch. All over the world. I was never ill. I avoided dysentery by using the little purification pills provided by my wise old Uncle Sam and everything was fine. Take reasonable precautions and live your life to the fullest extent. I mean safety is nice....but it's not first. LIFE is first and life....is....not....safe.

A former bodyguard to Russian President Vladimir Putin was murdered with a poison that produced symptoms remarkably similar to those that killed former spy Alexander Litvinenko, it emerged yesterday.

Probably learned too much about their boss which could prove embarrassing at a later date. Sounds like FOB (Friends of Bill) are freelancing. Next thing you know the travel secretary will be found in Gorky Park with a gunshot to the head, but lying nice and neat on a park bench with the gun still clenched in his fist and no GSR (Gun Shot Residue) on the wound....
