Warden Message: Heightened Potential for Anti-American Activity
U.S. Embassy Cotonou issued the following Warden Message on December 6:

Approximately 40 minutes ago, there was an attempted car jacking/robbery of an SAGAM money car on the four-lane roadway close to the Presidency. Our Police and Gendarme sources are all reporting that this was a criminal incident, an attempt to steal money from the car, or steal the car. The car was being escorted by security on motorcycles when it was attacked. The attackers have so far managed to escape. The roadway is currently closed behind the French Embassy (near the Port) and at the intersection near the Novotel. Rue Jean Paul is also blocked at the French Cultural Center. For the time being, these roadways should be avoided. Police are also setting up random checkpoints in an effort to capture the criminals. Please exercise caution around any checkpoints and be cooperative with authorities.

American citizens may contact the U.S. Embassy in Cotonou at (229) 21-30-06-50 for further information. For after-hours emergencies, please dial (229) 97-97-47-28. The U.S. Embassy is located at Rue Caporal Bernard Anani, 01 BP 2012. The consular section email is ConsularCotono@state.gov.

For the latest security information, Americans should regularly monitor the Department's Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings, and other Public Announcements can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S. and Canada, or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
