New Action Western Motion Picture Directed by a FReeper
Original Motion Picture "The Hayfield" ^ | November 14, 2006 | NoControllingLegalAuthority

I wanted to share a link to our web site for a new action Western feature motion picture nearing completion. This is an "indie" movie being made by folks who are just in love with Western movies and wanted to make one ourselves.

It is based upon a true story.

It is being shot in state-of-the-art high definition digital video.

This movie has been shot completely within the United States over this summer and fall, in Idaho, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and South Dakota.

You can watch a two-minute trailer of scenes from the movie at our site.

All you say of the Fetteran Fight and those involved is true. Carrington had a pretty good grasp on the situation, mainly because of all the Indian attacks around Fort Phil Kearney, and between there and Fort Reno, since Kearney was first established that previous summer.

It was Fetterman's ego that got in his way, along with the fact that he'd just arrived on scene a couple months before the fight, and had no knowledge of Indian tactics or ability. His boast that with 80 men he could ride through the entire Sioux nation was proved tracically wrong when he and 79 others were killed.

When I visited there, back in '90, There was a center/bookstore and that was about it. The scene of the Fetterman fight was easy to get to; it's right along the state highway with I 90 visible a mile or so away. But the Wagon Box Fight scene was a little more remote, off in the Pineys near the Big Horn foothills.

Of course, the Fort is long gone, having been burned the following year after being abandoned. I understand that since my visit they've begun building sections of wall to give visitors an idea of what the fort was like, and have located where specific buildings stood.

Not only a story of Red Cloud's war, but one of the Bozeman Trail itself could be made into an interesting movie. I know I'm looking forward to this one; that's for sure.

I was just in Wyoming a few weeks ago, but didn't have a chance to stop at the Fetterman Fight. I went to Fort Laramie and froze my tailend off (it was about 35 degrees with a 25-30mph wind).

The next day, my dad and I went up to the Little Bighorn and spent a couple of hours wandering that battlefield. Just standing there on Last Stand Hill, you can imagine Custer and the survivors clustered together behind their downed horses, wondering where all those Indians came from.

I love westerns. Have you looked into filming in New Mexico? We have a film office here that is very aggressive in getting films in the state.

Not exactly the way Custer had it planned, was it. I have more books on this subject than any other. I had my own website at one time telling the LBH story. I took it down a year or more ago because I changed my ISP and couldn't get it republished on the new server.

Had he waited one more day things would likely have turned out differently. But he bought in to the idea that the 7th had been 'discovered' and decided to attack the village without a first reconnaissance. And it's doubtful he understood that all the villages were banded together in one very large camp. His experience 8 years earlier on the Washita told a different story.

It gives pretty good example of the phrase 'know thy enemy'.

I know a Keith Harris who is an actor/singer. Could you point me towards a picture of him elsewhere on the internet (or FReepmail me a link) so I can see if your cast member is the same guy I know?!

Would look good in the new DLP projector movie house near us, unfortunately this movie probably won't generate the buzz to be picked up there.

The new DLP process is absolutely stunning...basically high definition on a movie screen...and the color and clarity is unreal. I saw "Happy Feet" with my 2 sons this past week in Digital projection....the CGI will make your hair stand on end!

Outstanding! If you don't mind my bringing this up, the last Western I saw that I thought was a labor of love was Heaven's Gate. (I'm one of the three people who loved that movie.) Best of luck to you and I look forward to seeing it.

"Thanks for the info. I'm sure we'll take a look at all the options. We will probably have to replace our home pc before that anyway and if we do we'll maybe have to factor in some of these requirements."

One thing you ought to consider is what are the industry standards for editing software. I'm sure he'll need to get a regular job editing or whatever at some point, before he becomes the next Lucas ;) and it would be frustrating if he grew up on the "wrong" platform relative to what the job market uses. I see it a lot with graphic designers (that's what I am) who are starting out and only know how to use Corel Draw on a PC, when the whole world is using Adobe CS2 on Macs, just as an example. They're lost! Both platforms are capable, but you have to factor in what is most compatible with or in demand in the market.

Thanks for the input. We've been thinking along those lines. We are well aware that sometimes the things that are taught in schools don't keep pace with what is actually being done in the "real world", such as you mentioned with different platforms. One thing we would love is for him to get some kind of apprentice or intern position with someone doing what he wants. That way he will get to see how all the various aspects of movie making come together. We are also looking into the possibility of having him attend Revolution School in St. Louis, MO. It is a Christian school focusing on training youth to be leaders in worship, music, audio-visual technology, etc. It wouldn't be exactly the same as making movies, but he would get some experience with some of the latest audio and video equipment and get a start on learning the mechanics of how to take his artistic vision and translate that into a finished production.

The trailer looks fantastic! Please ping me when the movie comes out on DVD. I think you're going to do very well with this project.

The dinosaur media is dying, and it couldn't have happened to a more deserving bunch!
