Best Buy Bans Use of Merry Christmas In Advertising
Forbes.com ^ | 11/11/06 | By ANNE D'INNOCENZIO

Best Buy has announced they will be using "Happy Holidays" this coming Christmas shopping season, and they will not be using "Merry Christmas."

Dawn Bryant, a spokeswoman at Best Buy Co. Inc., says their advertising will not be using the term "Merry Christmas." "We are going to continue to use the term holiday because there are several holidays throughout that time period, and we certainly need to be respectful of all of them," Bryant said. Here's a recipe for you:

Coal Candy

4 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups corn syrup
1 cup water
2 teaspoons anise extract
1 teaspoon black food coloring paste

Line an 8-inch square METAL baking pan with foil, extending the edges over the sides of the pan. Lightly grease the foil with butter; set aside.

Measure sugar, corn syrup and water in large heavy pot.
Stir over medium-low heat until sugar is dissolved and mixture comes to a boil, being careful not to splash sugar mixture on side of pan.

Carefully clip candy thermometer to side of pan (do not let bulb touch bottom of pan).

Cook about 15 minutes, without stirring, until thermometer registers 290.

Immediately remove from heat.
Stir in anise extract and food coloring.

Pour mixture into prepared pan. Cool completely.
To get big pieces of coal-looking candy, gently drop pan to break the candy.

Makes about 3 pounds..........

Gee. I didn't know this thread was a consumer report on DVD players. Sheesh.

Now don't make me come down there and kick your ass. ;-)

(that was a three years old review I wrote about a DVD player I bought from Best Buy. Their customer service sucked. I didnt have time to edit it or anything because I was in a rush to get offline. Just cut and paste and run)

And so it begins. The annual "Do nothing but surrender to anti-religious/Christian bigotry" claptrap.

Maybe slightly off topic but still relevant... does anyone know whether Target rescinded their policy of not allowing the Salvation Army bell ringers on their property after that fiasco several Chrismases ago? I was just wondering if they had received enough pressure to revise that policy or if it's still in place.

I just went to the Target website to check their use of "Christmas". While they do have "Christmas Decor" listed as a major category on their homepage, most everything is "Holiday" and "Gift" oriented. But at least they haven't banned the word or name "Christmas" yet.

Just wondering, before I go do any "Christmas" shopping for "Christmas gifts", not holiday shopping for holiday gifts. I don't celebrate the "holidays", I celebrate Christmas.

The obnoxious Loss Prevention people, however, will still scream "WELCOME TO BEST BUY" thinking it makes them sound polite when in fact they sound unconvincing and rude - I don't need shouted at regardless of context.

The next time you visit Best Buy count the number of words/sentences used to help you complete your transaction. Then count the number of words/sentences used to sell you an overpriced/high-margin extended warranty, a magazine subscription, a request to visit the Bizrate site, etc. You will notice quickly that spending your money isn't enough - they want more.

Dear Mrs. Hoff,
I am writing to you and hoping that you will be able to explain an issue to me or refer me to someone that can. I must first tell you that my family gives A LOT of business to Best Buy. My concern is with the recent news that "Best Buy bans Using "Merry Christmas." I DO UNDERSTAND that there are some people in America that do not celebrate Christmas. I understand that you are trying to be equally respectful to "all holidays." Please correct me if I am wrong. My question is this.. Best Buy is closed on December 25tt to celebrate "Christmas." So, would I be correct to assume that Best Buy will also be closed on Hannukkah and Eid and Ramadan and the Chines New Year????? Or does Best Buy still intend to single out December 25th? Also, since Best Buy wants to be respectful of "ALL holidays."..maybe you guys should also close on January 1, February 14, Easter Sunday, July 4 (After all.. we are ALL AMERICANS and people are dying for our freedom) , May 5 (the people of Mexico would appreciate this.) October 31. I am sure that the decision to "ban Christmas" was carefully thought out before the decision was reached. I am writing this letter to ask Best Buy to "CAREFULLY RECONSIDER this decision. In our country, there are A LOT more people that DO celebrate Christmas than Do Not! Best Buy rakes in A LOT of money each year as people go CHRISTMAS shopping. I wonder if Best Buy would appreciate it if EVERY CHRISTIAN decided to BAN BEST BUY from their lists of places to do their CHRISTMAS shopping. I do not plan to walk into another Best Buy until I see CHRIST Put back into the reason for this season.
