Found python in toilet (Norway)
Aftenposten ^ | October 26, 2006 | not specified

Posted on 10/27/2006 3:15:36 AM PDT by franksolich

A Kristiansand woman got the shock of her life during a visit to the family toilet on Tuesday.

Upon lifting the seat she spotted a two-meter (6.5 foot) long python coiled up in the bottom of the bowl.

"I was about to sit down and lifted the seat and there was something big and fat lying down there," Bente Mørch told newspaper VG.

The police were called and two officers equipped with shields managed to ease the large snake out of the toilet.

"When one of them lifted the seat he said: S**t! It's true, it is a snake," Mørch said.

The creature had definitely traveled through the sewer system to reach the Mørch household and police had contacted the Food Safety Authority to determine the animal's fate.

"WOW, must have been a wrinkle neck brown python."

Perhaps it belonged to the guy sitting in the stall next to her.

For pete's sake. Shields? Just call for a 10-year-old boy. He'd fish that snake out of there in a minute with his bare hands. At least I would have at that age...or now, for that matter.

Mornin' brother!

"The creature had definitely traveled through the sewer system to reach the Mørch household..."

This could have been more strange, like maybe they were on a septic system.

Heh. This reminds me of the time back when the "Jaws" movie first came out. I was talking to a cousin about it and she said, "Yeah. It was so scary that now I don't even sit down on the commode without looking first."

Are pythons migratory? Some Pythons think coconuts are migratory.

Hmmm..mm . . that's funny. I think the dogs are the ones who are telling all their friends that their only problem is one person named libstripper who always occupies THEIR bed just when they want to go to sleep.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I'm under the impression that snakes breathe.

Air. Oxygen.

Wouldn't a snake, especially a snake not particularly a water snake (a tree snake, for example), drown before going through the plumbing?

Waste piping is not filled with water. It is empty, except for whatever waste is tricking through it. Like a roadside storm-sewer culvert.

The only thing that is filled with water is the trap.

Oh. Thank you, sir; obviously waterworks are not my expertise; I thought the whole thing would be jammed with water.

Exotic animals like pythons are not native to Norway and will not survive our long and cold Norwegian Winters. If they can`t be handed over to something like a zoo, they are put to sleep (for good). This is up to the Food Safety Authority to decide.

I live on the coast of Florida....
..a friend of mine found a large snake in the upstairs toilet.....her house is solidly built, but there it was...coiled in the bowl.

She called animal control....but somehow the local news found out and showed up right away.

She was so embarrassed!

This is up to the Food Safety Authority to decide.

Begen: I guess the question someone else asked earlier, and I'm asking now, is this an accurate translation, from Norwegian into English, the "Food" Safety Authority?

Or is this not an accurate translation?

What would "food safety" have to do with disposal of wild animals?

The Aftenposten has two of the finest translators around, Jonathan Tisdall and the beautiful Nina Berglund, but it's obvious that once in a while a third or fourth or fifth (unnamed) person fills in--perhaps a college student or something--when neither the stalwart Jonathan nor the beautiful Nina are around, to translate.

I have noticed this before; one can easily discern a Tisdall or Berglund product by its sterling quality in translation, and then there's some clunkers obviously not produced by either of these two top-notch professional translators.

Is "Food" Safety Authority the correct translation, from Norwegian into England.....and if it is in fact correct, what does food safety have to do with disposal of wild animals?

We're all VERY curious here.

Thank-you for the explanation....
..I'm sure we all wondered about the unusual idea of snakes in Norway....of all places.

It's not an unheard thing with my friend's story ...here in Florida... .although still rare for sure.

Didn't Kipling's fictional snake find entrance through a bathroom opening?

Sorry about the mistyping of "Bergan" and for using "England" instead of "English;" I've been up since very early morning, waiting for the October Surprise, which hasn't happened yet, but should soon, given that there's only four more days left in the month.

Food Safety Authority is a quite accurate translation of the Norwegian title, Mattilsynet. They have a website in Norwegian and English, www.mattilsynet.no

They are in charge of controlling import and export of animals, including exotic pets.

What is a October Surprise?

Okay, thank you, sir; if you say that's an accurate translation, it has to be an accurate translation.

An "October Surprise" is a trick devised by Karl Rove, super-intelligent special assistant to George Bush, that strikes the Democrats when they do not expect it, and it influences elections.

Or so the Democrats allege; whether it is really true or not, only God and Karl Rove know.

DUmmieland was "visited" by the Secret Service yesterday (Thursday), but no, that's not big enough to be an "October Surprise."

An obscene book was found in Virginia yesterday (Thursday), that might influence an election in that state, but no, that's not big enough to be an "October Surprise."

The Republican candidate for governor of California leads his Democratic challenger 48-30% in the polls, but no, that's not big enough to be an "October Surprise."

So it's apparent the "October Surprise" hasn't come yet, and time is running out.

In all honesty, Democrats really really really believe this stuff, while we Republicans don't take it seriously; it's a joke.

But Democrats in America have no sense of humor.

I would like to thank you for your comments.

It may seem strange, but we have three snake species here in Norway. They hibernate from October to April. Only one of them is venomous, the common adder. Their bite is not more dangerous to us humans than a sting from a wasp.

Living in a cold country is not all bad. Few snakes, no dangerous insects.

Now, that has to be sloppy translation.

I'm sure she really said "I lifted the seat and was about to sit down....."

It makes more sense.
