Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I'm under the impression that snakes breathe.

Air. Oxygen.

Wouldn't a snake, especially a snake not particularly a water snake (a tree snake, for example), drown before going through the plumbing?

Waste piping is not filled with water. It is empty, except for whatever waste is tricking through it. Like a roadside storm-sewer culvert.

The only thing that is filled with water is the trap.
