Wouldn't a snake, especially a snake not particularly a water snake (a tree snake, for example), drown before going through the plumbing?

Waste piping is not filled with water. It is empty, except for whatever waste is tricking through it. Like a roadside storm-sewer culvert.

The only thing that is filled with water is the trap.

Oh. Thank you, sir; obviously waterworks are not my expertise; I thought the whole thing would be jammed with water.
