Did you happen to catch an earlier report by a WCBS-TV newswoman (I forget her name) speculating that (or reporting supposed witness statements that) one person was reported to have been ejected from the plane and falling into the East River prior to the crash? Putting the tragedy aside for the moment, it is fascinating to watch reports of breaking news because of the possibility of picking up gems like that one. IMHO, after switching between channels 2, 4, and 7, WNBC-TV had the best coverage that I saw, possibly because the anchor is a pilot himself, and possibly also because they just exhibit a higher level of professionalism...

Bloomberg may have to relent and support some restricted airspace on NYC. Pataki is not pleased with this program.

In breaking news situations, take the earliest reports, throw out half the reported facts (at random), and you're probably pretty close to reality.

Thurman Munson was one of the few Yankees I actually liked as a kid. Not a nice guy, from all I've read, but man, could he play, and did he always give it everything he had.

Munson's crash was a little different from Lidle's; he was a fairly experienced pilot (500 hours or so) but had just taken delivery of a Cessna Citation business jet. He was conducting touch-and-go landing practice with a couple of friends along for the ride, and forgot to extend the flaps, hitting the ground about 900 feet short of the runway. Sadly he was the only fatality, the two passengers got out with only minor injuries.

I've seen a ballgame in Thurman Munson Stadium in Akron, OH. Nice little facility, it was a good place to see some AA ball while on a business trip.

Yep, such as, for example, the conflicting reports that it may have been a helicopter that crashed into the building...

I believe the airspace over NYC is already restricted, and it's illegal to buzz buildings and structures. Anyone know for sure?

You cannot square your nanny-state thumb sucking over GA with your pro-gun views. Sorry. Try again next time.

I am aware of several vfr corridors through otherwise restricted airspace, like around Tindale and Eglin AFB and Pensacola NAS, and you need to be talking to ATC when you are going to transverse their areas. I am not even remotely familiar with the airspace around NYC and would be quite surprised to learn you could fly anywhere near NYC without being in contact with them.

Let's hope your attitude is shared by plenty of others who will make sure this is, in face, effected. Enough already.

Thanks Turbo...that helps to clarify. I heard earlier that Lidle had over 700 hours of flight time. Of course, they also stated that he was in the plane alone.

Yes, I saw it. That was Roz Abrams from WCBS-TV, who is their 12 and 5PM anchor. She did say it was a rumor and not confirmed, though.

I was switching between 2 and 4, but didn't see them bring out Chuck Scarborough. Channel 4 usually is more professional than the rest.

Your defense of something you enjoy is understandable. But shrieking about it being like the right to bear arms is a reach. You might try presenting logical arguments as opposed to hyperventilating and resorting to the ad hominem.

Maybe YOU cant, but I do it fine. Amazing how some of you think I cant sleep at night if you dont agree with me. Next, you will be telling me how my GA views dont square with my own flying ability?

So far, the nature of domestic terrorism we have largely seen carried out in America has been of the "lone nut" variety, but then they are ALL nuts. So are Klan members.

No love lost for the Klan but puzzled to explain your reference except for the obligatory white man's guilt.

But, (and this is something the GA's just cant stand) it is a long way to discuss military flight training compared to what your average GA dude gets.

I'm a GA pilot pilot too, but I agree with you to a degree, there's a ton of additional training available out there for GA pilots, but the average pilot doesn't take adavantage of it...dumb. Also a lot of pilots flying a whole lot more plane than they should just because they have deep pockets.

I've personally taken a whole lot of additional training - physiological training, emergency water egress, aerobatic, and mountain and backcountry training. I've even had to dead stick a landing due to mechanical failure...but I could still get bit on the butt by the alligator of fate.

From news reports, I don't think there is unlimited VFR flying allowed over the island of Manhattan - just over the rivers. You can't totally shut off airspace on the rivers to all aircraft - there are a number of helicopter pads on the river.

Munson's crash is indicative of what typical about many GA pilots. An experienced pilot is a fool if they believe that flap settings are something that can be left for memory. There is a little thing called a 'checklist' to be used and you dont just skip it because you think you will remember, because you wont one time and you might die.

It happens all the time, and GA-ers wont cop to it. Many of them believe that because they can afford the plane and avgas, that they should be left alone.
