Turning Pain Into Praise

READ: 2 Corinthians 1:7-11

As you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation. —2 Corinthians 1:7

After years of a remarkable and  fruitful ministry in India, Amy Carmichael became a bedridden sufferer. As the courageous founder and dynamic heart of the Dohnavur Fellowship, she had been instrumental in rescuing hundreds of girls and boys from a terrible life of sexual servitude.

While she carried on her rescue operation of bringing young people into spiritual freedom through faith in Jesus Christ, she wrote books and poems that are still blessing readers around the world.

Then arthritis made Amy a pain-wracked invalid. Did she bemoan her affliction or question God? No. Amy was still the guiding inspiration of Dohnavur, and she still kept on writing. Her meditations, letters, and poems are filled with praise to God and encouragement to her fellow pilgrims.

When affliction strikes us, how do we react? Are we embittered, or do we trustfully appropriate God’s sustaining grace? (2 Cor. 12:9). And do we prayerfully encourage those around us by our Spirit-enabled cheerfulness, our courage, and our confidence in God?

When we rely on the Lord, He will help us turn pain into praise. Vernon C Grounds

Can God trust you with sorrow,
With anguish, and with pain,
Or would your faith soon falter
And faint beneath the strain?  —Nicholson

Praise is the song of a soul set free.

USHPIZIN http://www.ushpizin.com
SYNOPSIS:
"Moshe (Shalom Rand) and Mali (Michal Bat Sheva Rand) are a poor and barren Orthodox couple living in a religious neighbourhood of Jerusalem. On the Jewish Holy day of Succoth (a reminder of the temporary wood dwellings used by Jews during the Exodus) they receive unexpected guests: two escaped convicts, one a friend of Moshe's from his shady secular past, the other his cellmate (Shaul Mizrahi, Ilan Ganani). Moshe and Mali believe that their guests were sent to them by God as a test of faith. A real tough test."

This is the best foreign film I've seen in ages. It binds the Abraham/Sarah theme with the holiday of Succoth, so pertinent to the faith we need in these times of Islamo/Ishmael facism. All people of faith must see this movie.

Little Miss Sunshine

Sadly there is some harsh language and a couple of mature situations, making it inaccessible to younger family members. My granddaughters can't see this for 10 or 15 years but would probably love the story sooner. But the script is great, the acting is wonderful, and I believe the directors did a fabulous job. One recognizes familiar devices used just a bit differently or somewhat better than before throughout the flick. Think of the doting grandfather, the insufferable father, the child with big dreams, and many more. They are all presented with a different twist. Loved it!

I particularly enjoyed Hollywoodland. While it played a little fast and loose with the facts of George Reeves death (for instance the house was totally wrong), I think it did a great job of portraying George Reeves and the times he lived in.

I'm so far behind on the movie thing, by the time I see them they are on the dollar rack. But I did see Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Sedgewick and it was pretty good.

It's been a slow year for movies but I'm really pumped for the upcoming WWI epic "Flyboys". No one has ever duplicated Howard Hughes achievements in "Hell's Angels" where he had real pilots performing real maneuvers while camera-planes were put in real peril just to get the shots. One veteran pilot died for that movie.

Now that CGI is coming close to perfection I'm anxious to see if modern technology and evolved production skill can approach that level of thrill last seen 76 years ago.
