Ky. Plane Crash Survivor Asks 'Why?'

By JEFFREY McMURRAY The Associated Press Wednesday, September 6, 2006; 10:47 PM

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The sole survivor of a plane crash that killed 49 people near the Lexington airport last week told family members from his hospital bed, "Why did God do this to me?" but he hasn't mentioned the crash, a close family friend said Wednesday.

James Polehinke, who was the flight's co-pilot, can move only his head, and tears often well up in his eyes, said Antonio Cruz, Polehinke's mother's boyfriend. He said the 44-year-old has been in and out of consciousness.

I was unaware that those who dare to disbelieve what you believe are disallowed from certain areas of FR. Perhaps you should set up a fence?

Oh, poor poor pitiful you. You act like an jerk and then complain when people call you on it. You know damned well that you have no other object on this thread (and so many others) than to be a turd in the punchbowl.

Once you grow up, I'm sure you'll see the error of your ways.

Unwarranted "survivor guilt" can manifest itself in a variety of ways......its a tricky devil

It's not that any one wants you banned from posting your opinion. It's just that it is rude to bring your opinion into a simple prayer request thread. There is enough rudeness in our culture. This pilot is hurting physicaly, emotionaly, and spirtitually. Doctors will deal with the first, psychologists with the second. What harm to you if others try to help the third with a prayer? I'm sending prayers for his family and loved ones too, who are also hurting.

It's just that it is rude to bring your opinion into a simple prayer request thread.

But it seems to me that it's not "a simple prayer request thread", it's a news article with a prayer request attached. If someone had posted a thread that just asked for prayers for the co-pilot, there wouldn't have been any clash, but when the thread starts out with a news article that contains new material it's not surprising that people might drop in for the article or comment on the article's contents.

I myself checked out this thread because of the article headline itself, not the parenthetical prayer request that seemed an "oh by the way" addendum, so I don't think it's out of line that anyone else might have as well.

There is enough rudeness in our culture.

True enough -- you should have seen post #9...

This pilot is hurting physicaly, emotionaly, and spirtitually. Doctors will deal with the first, psychologists with the second. What harm to you if others try to help the third with a prayer?

I haven't seen anyone take any issue with this, including the person you're responding to. He was commenting on an aspect of the article, and not the prayer request itself.

And I'm not trying to sidetrack the prayer request either, I'm just trying to ease what looks like an avoidable misunderstanding. I won't belabor it beyond this one post, it's just that like you, I don't like to see needless rudeness or animosity.

I'm sending prayers for his family and loved ones too, who are also hurting.

That's very commendable.

Ah, but you see, it's not something new. The boy's got a long history of showing up on prayer threads and talking trash.

While this is true... it's true of virtually *every* religion ever dreamed up. This means that either all religions are true

I've been down that route myself. (Telling myself, "There are so many world religions, how can just one be correct?")

I was about 24 when I had that bright idea and I held to it for quite a while.

Then I realized that all we know, from the "successes" of so many religions, is that Providence (i.e., God) shines on all His children.

God's love of all His children is totally independent of God's preference for us to worship Him in a particular way.

Even if we aren't worshipping Him the way He prefers, we see evidence of His love. That's one of the ways that many people are drawn to Him.

The more we become aware of His love, the more we look for His suggestions of ways to do things; the more we try to worship Him, thank Him, praise Him, and beseech Him in the way He wants.

It's a humbling experience, submitting to reality -- whether scientific reality or spiritual reality.

Guess you haven't been here long enough. Certain coffee klatch threads are "protected" from debate. However I don't think this is one of them.

Might there be a proper perspective to examine this issue?

There's more than one perspective to look at anything in life.

One perpective examines human error.

syriacus:How about blaming the drinking of "spirits" from a bottle?

orionblamblam: Better would be to blame the pilots for getting boozed up.

And, voila I was saying that very thing.

his means that either all religions are true (a logical impossibility given the mutually exclusive nature of the big ones), or faith is simply another mental mechanism.

Scientists have often disagreed on very important issues. (Still do.)
Does that mean all scientists are correct?
Does that mean all scientists are wrong?

Points taken. Perhaps since I am such a news junkie and was aware of the situatuion I blew past the article part to what I thougt was the threads point. Having dealt with survivor quilt both within my family and as a Critical Stress Debriefer for rescue crews I am really sensitive to that aspect of the recovery process.

Thanks for all the kind responses. I didn't intend for the thread to become hijacked into an argument over the reality of "God" or the value of religion or even for the whys and wherefores of the plane crash. I saw it as an opportunity to pray for everyone involved in this tragedy, so again, thanks to all of those who responded kindly.

Do you think you will get an answer from the mods? Or will they hide from their actions yet again?

3 hours has past since a question was asked of a mod. No answer yet, so my vote is your run and hide.
