Ky. Plane Crash Survivor Asks 'Why?'

By JEFFREY McMURRAY The Associated Press Wednesday, September 6, 2006; 10:47 PM

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The sole survivor of a plane crash that killed 49 people near the Lexington airport last week told family members from his hospital bed, "Why did God do this to me?" but he hasn't mentioned the crash, a close family friend said Wednesday.

James Polehinke, who was the flight's co-pilot, can move only his head, and tears often well up in his eyes, said Antonio Cruz, Polehinke's mother's boyfriend. He said the 44-year-old has been in and out of consciousness.

Why did Comair 5191 Crash at Lexington?

"There is no question that the pilot of the Bombardier CRJ-100/200 (depending on the source) lined-up on the 3,500 ft. runway 26 rather than the 7,000 ft. runway 22. The CRJ-100/200 would normally require about a 5,000 ft takeoff roll. Evidence of tire marks in the sod past the end of the runway and impact evidence on an earthen berm farther on, indicate that the aircraft never rotated for takeoff, but did temporarily become airborne after hitting the berm. .... Also not very helpful is all the speculating, questioning, posturing, politicking and silly emailing that has been going in the media and cyberspace regarding what is and is not important regarding this accident. What happened is and will forever be about as pure a case of pilot error as you will ever hear about."

I've flown planes. And I've seen mistakes made, though not with repurcussions such as this. Sometimes... stuff happens. People screw up. When people use the crutch of supernatural entities - God, Satan, Gremlins, whatever - to explain screwups, that is simply deflecting fault away from the *true* causes of the mishap.

I didn't mean that. Have you tried having faith in God?

Seems to me, that someone with a scientific attitude would want to rigorously examine something, before judging it.

True. And that's why cause-and-effect is so popular amongst the scientifically literate.

Persons of faith usually want to get to the bottom of things, so they can improve things.

History differs with that interpretation. If it turns out that the pilots were likkered up, how does blaming God, Satan or gremlins aid the investigation?

Lemme guess, it's early Friday morning and it's time to scan the threads. The words "Prayer Request" hit your radar and it's time to belittle the unwashed who dare to believe in God.

Gee, a few more taunts and you just might convince the rest of FR to become atheists...

True. And that's why cause-and-effect is so popular amongst the scientifically literate.

And "cause and effect" is popular among persons of faith. As one example, they love to see the difference that faith has made in the lives of people they know.

Any event can be correctly looked at from different perspectives

As you've pointed out, one perspective might be the pertinent one to correcting the problem.

That's why we have investigations.

It's a prayer thread, pal. Your only reason for being here is to cause problems. Please leave.

How about blaming the drinking of "spirits" from a bottle?
;-)

While this is true... it's true of virtually *every* religion ever dreamed up. This means that either all religions are true (a logical impossibility given the mutually exclusive nature of the big ones), or faith is simply another mental mechanism.

> one perspective might be the pertinent one to correcting the problem.

Correct. A plane crashes on takeoff. Turns out the plane was on the wrong runway. There are suspicions the pilots were drunked up. Might there be a proper perspective to examine this issue?

It was posted along with all the other threads popping up. I was unaware that those who dare to disbelieve what you believe are disallowed from certain areas of FR. Perhaps you should set up a fence?

Better would be to blame the pilots for getting boozed up. Spread the news that booze + airplanes = bad (this news really *should* have already gotten out), and another such screwup may be averted. But if the claim is made that Satan took down the plane... well, not a heck of a lot can be done about that.

If you don't believe in God, then why are you so concerned with a request for prayer thread?

I would respectfully ask you to please stop badgering the people of faith who have so kindly responded. God bless you.
