Where’s The Compassion for Mel Gibson?

LOS ANGELES- Since Mel Gibson’s arrest for suspicion of drunk driving last week, liberal Jewish leaders and most of the media have condemned him for uttering anti-Jewish slurs. On two occasions Gibson has since offered apologies and asked forgiveness from the Jewish community—but some in the media are still not satisfied. Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Founder and President of BOND (Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny) issued a statement today calling for Gibson’s detractors to “have compassion” for the star. Below is Rev. Peterson’s statement in its entirety regarding this issue:

“I am sorry that Mel Gibson and his family are going through this difficult period. Gibson absolutely did the right thing by offering a heartfelt apology and asking for forgiveness from the Jewish community—he’s even asked to meet with Jewish leaders. To those who will not be satisfied until Gibson is destroyed—I say ‘shame on you. Where’s your humanity?’

“Now there appears to be an orchestrated campaign by some Hollywood insiders and media to personally destroy Gibson. These same people opposed Gibson’s blockbuster ‘The Passion of the Christ’ which despite opposition from liberals was a huge hit among audiences. These ‘smear merchants’ are using this incident to get back at Gibson. It’s time that people accept his apology and move on.

“Had this been a liberal struggling with a similar addiction—these same people would be calling for understanding—so where’s the compassion for Mel Gibson? Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Louis Farrakhan have all made anti-Jewish remarks in the past with little public condemnation. But God help you if you make a highly successful movie about Jesus Christ and then succumb to alcoholism. This is another example of selective outrage practiced by liberal hypocrites. So much for liberal compassion.”

BOND (Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny) is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization whose mission is “rebuilding the family by rebuilding the man.” Rev. Peterson is the author of SCAM: How the Black Leadership Exploits Black America. For more information visit BOND

Compare Gibson's crucifixion to the way a drunken Ted Kennedy was treated after he killed his secretary and was assisted in the cover up but did not ask any cops if they were Jewish.

if his apology is sincere, and if he tries to remove what antisemitism he could have, then kudos to him for eradicating his racism--or at least some of it (every human creature is racist in some way). Some of the commenters on this thread seem to have branded him, though.

12 is three drinks. That is not blind drunk.

I didn't say he was blind drunk. He was impaired. Clearly, since we saw the way he acted when he was pulled over. .12 is 50% over the legal limit for drunk driving in California. And if a follow-up test was administered after he metabolized more alcohol, it's likely that he might have blown even higher.

Again, do you give everyone a pass who was pulled over (and why do you think he was pulled over if he was driving so wonderfully) and blows 50% over the legal blood alcohol limit?

I'm shocked we even have to discuss whether or not driving drunk is a serious problem. Unbelievable.

And if you dislike Mexicans, for example, its not "racism" its xenophobia.

It could be both or either.

I actually have done a fair amount of reading on the subject and am aware of the phenomena you speak of. But as you mention, none of that excuses Gibson in the slightest.

As If I havn't heard wise acre comments about Jews, Irish, Italians, Mexicans, Polacks, Japanese, Chinese, etc. etc. The press needs to give the guy a break. Mel is a good man.

Well, no.

Mexicans are not a race. Don't you watch the Mexican channels on TV? There are blond Mexicans, and Brunette Mexicans. There are Jewish Mexicans, and Quaker Mexicans.

Mexico is a country not a race.

What I meant was that there could be racism at the heart of that hatred. I'm not saying it's accurate - just that I believe anyone ignorant enough to be racist won't bother to take the time to actually learn about the actual population makeup of Mexico. They are trading in the dark-skinned sombrero-wearing stereotype. And yes, I'm aware of the diversity of the Mexican people.

indeed. Some other freepers have posted that if this had happened to people of African descent, more people would berate Mr. Gibson.

if he had stated that people of African descent were the cause for all wars in the world, most people of African descent would simply consider him a nut, not an extreme racist (there are a sizeable amount of freepers who figure people of African descent will declare almost anything racist, and thus they become resentful and racist themselves toward people of African descent because of their own faulty construct) even if he was free of alcoholic influence. Why can't some of the Jewish freepers? if he had stated that Asians or Latinos or Europeans (and Asian/Latino/European descended people) were the cause of all wars in the world, those groups would largely consider him a nut. it is absurd at how many freepers are overreacting.

We are embarrassed for him and feel bad that he had sunk to that level but we know that he has also done a lot of positive things in his life and we will support him.

He apologized and offered to work with the community, if you can't forgive him, it's you that has the hatred problem.

So I guess you forgive Clinton...

What I want the American people to know, what I want the Congress to know is that I am profoundly sorry for all I have done wrong in words and deeds. I never should have misled the country, the Congress, my friends or my family. Quite simply, I gave into my shame.[...]Meanwhile, I will continue to do all I can to reclaim the trust of the American people and to serve them well.

Mel Gibson is an obviously good man who battles demons. He shouldn't drink, At all. Ever. Sanity is a very wonderful state of mind.

Whats more unbelievable is you thinking that driving over the legal limit is not the very definition of driving drunk.

Uhh.. that is the defintion isn't it? It certainly is the legal definition. What do you consider the definition of driving drunk to be? I can't believe I'm even having this conversation.

Did I read this wrong the first time? If so, sorry. Why do you think that I don't believe that driving over the legal limit isn't driving drunk? I sure think I believe that.

I said 'Maybe you could start by telling us if you've ever driven while over the legal limit'

You said 'Yes I have. But I have never driven drunk. I hope you can realize the severity of the difference.'

Perhaps I misunderstood, but it sounds like you were making a distinction between the two.

Last night I caught the tail end of an interview with I believe, Keith Olberman and another gentlemen whose name was not posted while I watched. I believe he was jewish and spoke very eloquently about people going after Gibson because they are jealous etc.

I applauded this interview when it ended; I just wish I could have seen it from the beginning.

Does anyone know who this person was? It was aired last night (Tuesday evening).
